Dante from DMC, Christie from DOA, Xan Kriegor from UT, XIII( or whatever the guy's name is) from XIII, Vergil from DMC, and the Jester from DMC3, and did I mention Dante?

Because I can't own them... I have a Dreamcast, and a Gamecube... but nothing to play the other two on

You could also have added the highly accurate reason; 'because they're rubbish compared to the original Soul Calibur'.

That's being [very] harsh, but having played the series from the original Blade, I'm not happy that Namco abandoned the policy of launching arcade games first. A true beat 'em up is an arcade game, then a console game. The process also has the benefits of ironing out the creases in character balancing. I've heard III suffered from the same fate as IV with regards to poor balancing (the deadly combo of the Apprentice and Yoda sadly making the 360's the worst offender - but if the rumours are true, that Vader and Yoda will be DLC's in the future, then both versions will be even more 'broken').

I'm still going to get it, but the series has taken yet another DD-sized step towards the DOA's of this world. That's not a good move. Li Long would be turning in his grave...

That too... Although, I must say, all my favourite characters to play (minus Ivy... and no, I don't like her jsut for the... y'know) are from II, there's Raphael, Assassin, Yunsung and Talim

Yeah, I know perfectly well what you mean... that whip is amazing!

In SCIII I always used to play as Ivy though, she, and Mitsurugi (spellcheck please

) were my best characters.

You're absolutely right.
Also, I like the traveller from the myst series, because the player is supposed to identify with him/her, so basically it's me. ( Plus you don't see him/her and *it* doesn't speak, ever. )

I must add myself to the legion of people who said Jolee Bindo from Knights of the Old Republic. He amused me greatly. Additionally, I'd have to say Guybrush Threepwood from the Monkey Island series, from when LucasArts made good games.

Oh and Niko Bellic is awesome, too. My favorite of all the protagonists yet.

Actually, a prominant one I completely forgot was Tekken 2-era Kazuya Mishima. Namco have turned his design into that of an uncouth brute since, but in 2 he had grace, style, and power... easily my fave beat 'em up character.
