Ah, I remember that. I remember thinking that was strange that the big wig Imperial Base had one inn.Snail's Pace wrote:I agree that the world depicted in the games are scaled down versions of the world described in lore, but occasionally there are details in the games that aren't consistent with a scaled-down world. For example, I was struck by something Sorex in Solitude says the first time you meet him. He says that The Winking Skeever is the only inn in Solitude - which it is, if we are supposed to take the city's depiction at face value. But I find it hard to believe that a city of Solitude's supposed size and importance would have only one inn. It was probably a slip-up to include that line of dialog, as if not everybody on the writing team got the memo to remember that the game-world is a scaled-down version of the lore-world. I just find it amusing.

Maybe most of the people of Skyrim are farmers and fishermen, so most of the inns are in the countryside that is scaled out, or inns are mostly for travellers and most people do their drinking at home, or maybe the Winking Skeever is much larger then what is represented in game.

All of the above! lol Every building is bigger than depicted in game; you don't think the Blue Palace is just a few rooms and corridors, right?Dunmerdude wrote:Maybe most of the people of Skyrim are farmers and fishermen, so most of the inns are in the countryside that is scaled out, or inns are mostly for travellers and most people do their drinking at home, or maybe the Winking Skeever is much larger then what is represented in game.

If the dialogue says there's only one Inn in Solitude then we have to go with that, but size is flexible.
One of the things I like about Skyrim is the detail they put into having realistic production. In Oblivion and Morrowind the few scattered farms were only large enough to support the people working them, and the total number of hunters and fishermen, with rough scaling would only come up to 150, and the entire wine industry consisted of two families in one city. Skyrim actually has a viable production model. We can see where Mead, Meat, Crops, Furs and Lumber are produced, who does it and for whom.

The more I think about it, the more I think that line of dialogue could be a developer's in-joke (no pun intended) referencing the scaling itself (and breaking the fourth wall).

I never did think about that. they did a way better job of that.Dunmerdude wrote: One of the things I like about Skyrim is the detail they put into having realistic production. I'm glad there are less NPCs for the very simple fact that time goes by while you're running around. It's hard enough to find 1 NPC without having to look through a massive crowd.
I just hope the next game has more Redguard.

Re: Elder Scrolls games too small?
In the sense of not getting overwhelmed, I like that there aren't too many people. I can imagine the scaling done, and that there would obviously be more lore-wise than the game-mechanics show. I like what was mentioned about not knowing who a person is until you talk to them, and having random NPC's wouldn't be bad, but the lesser amounts of people doesn't bother me (maybe it's cause I don't like crowds IRL o.o which shouldn't effect me in game, but my phobias also include water and I hate swimming in games <.<; )
