Similar games to Morrowind

Post by MoncarBelvani »

Does anyone know of any RPGs which have well-developed histories, cultures and religions? I've been looking for an RPG to enjoy since completing Morrowind a year ago, but I haven't really loved any of them. I've played Skyrim, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and a number of other highly rated RPGs recently but they just feel a bit meh when compared to Morrowind. (That's not to say they are bad games btw, they are really good! I just can't get lost in their worlds like I can in Morrowind)

Gothic. It's more linear than Morrowind, with a bigger emphasis on the main story.

Also, Oblivion > Morrowind, plus you should check out the Fallout series if you haven't already. All of the various D&D RPGs have extremely well developed stories, cultures, and religions, owing to the fact they're drawing from decades-old campaign settings... but you rarely get the full sense of scale and freedom that you do in Morrowblivion's world.

I'll try and get a demo of Gothic soon. I think there is one on Steam.

I've tried Oblivion and I don't think it is better than Morrowind at all. I liked the combat, but I was greatly unimpressed with the story line, atmosphere and books. But I'll give some of the Fallout games a go, I've heard some good things about them.

The Witcher is very atmospheric and has deep lore. It's actually based on a series of books. They aren't openworld like Morrowind, but they have a very good story (a lot darker than Elder Scrolls in some ways). The Witcher 1 hasn't aged that well: combat is rather dull, but the story and lore is still quite nice (voice-acting is pretty bad though). The Witcher 2 I haven't played myself but I have heard very good things about it. If you're interested in buying them, they go on sale on Steam and Good Old Games quite often.

I'll second that Witcher recommendation. While it's not open world (and after TES the inability to wander off in any direction is hard to get used to), there is plenty of choices to make, and they are usually not black&white at all. It's not one of those games where you can reload a save after choosing one path to see what's on the other one, and then "optimize" your choice. Well, you can, but usually both paths mean you gain something while losing something else. For someone who grew up reading the books, like me, it's a dream come true. ;)

Gothic is fun and has a great story, but the controls take some getting used to - I found them a bit counter-intuitive at times.
