I'd prefer to go deaf than blind.

Tough choice, though.

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
I would prefer blindness. Music is way too important to me, and sound in general can always evoke images. On the other hand, I can't imagine songs from pictures. I have a visual impairment anyway.

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
Full-deaf or just bad hearing? If it was full on deaf, sure, give me that. Still got books, can still drive, and could pretend to be normal once I got the hang of reading lips. Perhaps I could still even talk the same, since I wasn't born deaf.
Now if it was bad hearing or blindness, then blind all the way. Nothing cool about having to wear hearing aids. You gain no sympathy for wearing hearing aids, you look retarded, and your sex life (at least as far as most HOT girls go) would be almost non-existent.
at least blind I could listen to audio books, look normal with a pair of shades on, and get TONS of sympathy. Also some people have blind fetishes and such. never have to worry about acne or bad hair days, because you can't [&@%!] see. a good excuse to get people to drive you around. You could sell your car and spend all that cash on everyone's favorite plant. It wouldn't be so bad at all. Certainly better than wearing hearing aids and looking like a freak (no offense to anyone who has to, I actually empathize with ya and feel bad for you.)
That's my oppinion anyhow.
Oh and seeing-eye dog! Get to take your dog everywhere, that'd be bad*ss!

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
I feel the blind are more dependent on others than the deaf and although your life would be limited either way, being deaf wouldn't confine you to your home or with your friends (if your lucky enough to have any,) as much as being blind. Preparing a meal, toilet, getting around outside, the deaf could do anything essential on their own. Even with a guide dog, the blind are very limited on what could possibly be accomplished without aid, and their only clear advantage in the outside world would be speech.
As far as what's to be missed, music is nice but so is the the moon; You might think that you'd remember the sound of a power ballad or the awe inspiring sights of canyons or all the pleasures of the opposite sex, but you wouldn't. Without sight or sound, memories of either of them would lose their sharpness until they faded away entirely. Which is just as well they did because it could only sadden you over the years to have those dreams taunting you.
I would have to choose to be deaf. They would both be awful but I could more easily maintain comfort in sight.

beyond driving and t.v, a blind man can do anything. You can walk down the street blind with your dog, you can live by yourself. You can still call and [&@%!] your satellite company out when there is a storm. You can still work in call centers (my favorite type of job). But you also get one HUGE advantage, when your blind, every girl is a 10! ;D

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
If you just became deaf tomorrow, yes, you could still talk exactly the same. The only time you'll find someone with actual speech difficulties is when they were born deaf or became deaf very young, when they were still developing speech, since you need to hear sounds in order to build upon them. Babbling and all that. Curiously, children born to deaf parents who use signed languages, even if they're hearing, will babble...with their hands! It's fascinating!KryptonianBlood wrote:Full-deaf or just bad hearing? If it was full on deaf, sure, give me that. Don't bother lip reading, though! Most of the sounds you produce and hear are minimal pairs, meaning they are made in the same place of the mouth, with the same positioning of your lips, and the only thing that differs is the vibrating of your vocal chords. You won't be able to hear or see that!

Uh...I don't think you can be deaf and still drive. Not safely or legally anyway.

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
No, you are allowed to drive while deaf. It's legal. You can still see everything, and studies show that deaf people are actually more aware on the road - which makes sense.
Edit: Also, sound is never a requirement to drive. Traffic lights, signs, emergency vehicles, and all of that rely on visual clues. Why do you think cop cars have annoying, flashy lights?

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
How would you hear someone honk there horn? And when you are pulled over, do you sign to the officer? It just seems a lot more walls to avoid for the perk of more attention.

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
Your license typically is stamped with any disabilities, including if you are ordered to wear glasses when driving or if you are hearing impaired, which means the officer would be able to understand the situation if they pulled a deaf person over. And even people who are hearing don't always react to the honking of a horn. Honestly, most accidents are unannounced! So, yes, if you can still drive even though your seeing impaired and are required to wear glasses at all times, you can still drive if your eyes are great but you can't hear. (You can look it up.)
I doubt "more attention" is a reason people drive...it's typically to get around and for the freedom, don't you think?

What are you talking about, Avron? I meant going deaf helping driving. I'll just take your word on the first part though, since it makes sense.

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
Maybe you should try getting a meal prepared, getting bathed and clothed, and wandering about blindfold to realize how much easier it would be if you were just deaf. I don't live in a city, so walking outside while blind with a dog would be a death sentence. And I think every girl would simply be just another girl, no 1's or 10's - "It is the blind who can truly see."KryptonianBlood wrote:TheOoogyBoogyMan wrote:I feel the blind are more dependent on others than the deaf and although your life would be limited either way, being deaf wouldn't confine you to your home or with your friends (if your lucky enough to have any,) as much as being blind. Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
As much as music means to me, I don't think being blind can help me in daily routine, I would still be able to feel vibrations of music and might be able to lip-read but normal chores, video games and sunsets create better sounds than the images that the ears make through waves.
Too many risks for me personally if I were blind, I might even starve to death and call the wrong number for the hospital. ;(
And don't get me started on driving...

Well, I'm a musician, so I couldn't choose to go deaf. Sucks, because being blind would be more disabling. Harder choice for us music lovers.

not much of a talker anyways, plus I will probably end up blind, eyesight is failing me now, well so is my hearing, so maybe both... :/

Blind.
My hearing is better than my vision, and I already know how to sense changes in airflow.
Deaf would hinder me, blindness wouldn't do much.

Having some 90% of my senses visual, I could never imagine going blind. I live through my eyes. Deaf, without sound taste, touch feel at zero, no smell... I could live with that.
But without my eyes, no way.

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
Tough! Going deaf, I wouldn't be able to listen to music, but that's really my only downside on that one. Going blind... I wouldn't be able to see colors or computer screens or read or draw...
So, yeah. Tough, but I'd have to say I'd prefer to be deaf.

I'd prefer NEITHER to be honest, but in this case deaf, because I would not be able to hear the rubbish my stepbrother talks about, but actually what he looks at is pretty bad. So thinking on it know, both!

Re: Would you rather go blind or deaf?
Both would be devastating to me because I'm an artist and I play piano. But my art is probably more important to me so I'd have to say deaf.
