I think it should be based on the server your phased into like a option (what type of death do you want?) or
The daedra or aedra to decide your fate entirely based on chance which one decides so if your evil it would be bad to get stendar but good to get methrunes dagon

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
instead of playing whack-a-mole with Dagon or running through a huge maze, i think we should take into consideration whats really happening here.. This is a big war, or soloing u could get killed by a monster or whatever, this will alter the death.
PVP -- if you die by another faction, you are a prisoner of war just like the old days. So maybe you don't die (maybe this game will not be so mainstream) and instead u are just super injured and wake in enemy jail. You get out over time with all your necessities (weapons armour) and lose your loot (gold being carried, food, valuables, etc). Maybe Tamriel has some sort of 'Geneva Convention" amongst the factions where you must treat prisoners of war accordingly. Never been a fan of the "Die and lose everything" Runescape style deaths.. That P*sses people off and makes them quit. I never get mad when I die in wow. Why? because i dont lose valuables.
Monsters -- Maybe after you "die" by a monster you (instead of the common respawning) wake up in your factions nearest owned settlement and it says "your body was found by an ally" or something.. You know what im getting at.
All im saying is it would be very cool to see some sort of new death system apart from other MMO's to give it some realism!
EDIT: I also like the above post. thats creative.

In big flashy letters across the entire server "SO AND SO HAS DIED TO INSERT MONSTER HERE AND/OR GRAVITY! LAUGH AND POINT AS THEY CORPSE WALK FROM THE NEAREST CONTINENT!" That'll learn those noobs.

So in case anyone is interested, or hasn't found out through other means, Bethesda's "Beta Signup Special" Podcast (#17 at http://www.bethblog.com/podcast/) says how the death system will work (or at least, how it works currently). (Time 16:28-17:39)

I like both of those options, actually. Very straightforward and simple, as it should be. Thanks for the update!

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
The WoW model then, basically. To be honest, I think it sounds kind of cool to have a more significant death penalty - seems like it would add more gravity to each fight - but I've never actually tried that firsthand, so I can't fairly recommend it.

I'll agree that losing everything sucks, but there's something to be said for the other areas of gameplay. Those "lose it all" games tend to have way more stuff available in trade between players and most of the equipment widely used in dangerous activities is easy to reacquire.
edit:
also take a look at the "auction house" of games like runescape and eve and how long it takes tor each a certain point versus what's required for various activities.

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
I am actually a fan of minimal death penalty. Some experience loss, and having to walk back to where I was from the spawn point. I don't enjoy the feeling of being punished for dying, when it is most likely due to circumstances beyond my control (Usually being PK'd or accidentally attracting the attention of an aggro monster).

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
This would be little harsh, but this is close to something in Dark Souls, where you have to achieve getting back by reaching a certain point despite enemies (In the game, it was your body).Mattbott wrote:once executed, i think TES lore actually gives a solution
Spoiler:
I like it, but maybe you would just return back your last town and have to level again, but this time you would level around 5 times faster until you are back to normal so it wasn't such a hassle.
You forget that at least a quarter of the people that will try this game are those that have enjoyed the series, imagine trying to tell them that they have to find friends, when they obviously preferred the solo experience of TES, if they ever want to enjoy this game as a whole.Avron the S'wit wrote:What online games do you people play these days? Fixed your double post.

What I meant by that was that I don't play multiplayer games to go solo. It's sort of against what a multiplayer game is. I mean, you can play those games and fly solo, and there's nothing against that, but the game is designed for you to be interactive and involved, both with the world and the other players in it.

Maybe for each death your weapons and armor become, say, 10% less effective. And you have to run to town to get repairs. It's an incentive to be a bit more careful, especially in dungeons, and a gold sink.
As for corpse runs or respawn points, I don't really have an opinion. I find both options irritating enough to want to avoid them.

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
I much prefer a light penalty for death. Sure, something harsher would add more weight to each fight, and make you think carefully, but do you really want to pay a big price if your character dies while you're AFK, or because of game lag? I know I don't.

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
True, but these kinds of problems are more than likely your own fault (excluding lag, of course). If you expect to win every fight without thinking, then you deserve to be bashed and then given the penalty.Jedi Taters wrote:I much prefer a light penalty for death. Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
That's the thing, I was speaking specifically about circumstances where my death is completely unpreventable. If I die because I'm not skilled enough or I get in over my head, I'm fine with a harsh penalty. But I'd rather have the penalty light overall solely for things like lag and unpreventable AFK. It's not like the penalty is tailored to whether or not you "deserve" it, after all.

I support this, also what you said about the jail is quite interesting I would actually like that addition! By far better than dying and coming back to life. (Hopefully not conjured through something other than Dead Thrall and being turned into ashes)Tesknowitall wrote:Never been a fan of the "Die and lose everything" Runescape style deaths.. Love the monsters part as well, just imagine waking up "your body was fou-" AAAHH my leg *Orsimer knaws at the Breton's leg*
But on a serious note, I think these ideas would go very well. No literal 'death' occurrence and teamwork / prisoner aspects of TES. Actually seems quite realistic.

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
Well, if PvP is tied to Cyrodiil, and no-where else, as it seems to be, I'll be dying a lot less than my WoW days anyway, where you'd have some high level enemy player hunting down those who were minding their own business. I'm given to understand the player is soul-less, which is why they can come back to life, Molag Bal owns their soul, I think I read.
Wayshrine spawning sounds fine, so long as they're spread out so that you never have to travel more than, say, 15 minutes due to a death
I just hope necromancers can't use your body..that'd be kind of awkward.

But don't worry, if I face you in combat I'll put your body to good use.
Hate respawning though, would have loved a different aspect of death in MMORPGs E.g. like Tesknowitall wrote... Sadly I don't think we will be granted that.

Re: What do you want the death penalty in TES:O to be?
Looks like the soul gems are being tied into the whole soulless hero thing, as we know now that when you die, you can resurrect with a soul gem, or be resurrected by someone else if they use a soul gem on you. Do you think that is the "penalty" to respawn where you die, i.e. usage of a consumable, or do you think there may be some other debuff?

Well that's what I'm not sure about. You'll definitely be able to respawn at a Wayshrine if you don't have a soul gem, but I wonder whether there may be yet another way to resurrect where you died which does not involve using a soul gem, but gives some other debuff instead.Jun Satou wrote:You mean no soul-gem, good-bye character?![]()

I reckon if you have a soul gem you can resurrect where you died, consuming opt he gem, or you can respawn at a way shrine or other location and corpse run to your body.

I'm guessing that reloading a save is out of the question? Yeah.. I guess it would be. I'd say losing a set amount of coins and experience.
