Just got a brand new TV, and I'm trying to get it working right with my laptop. Laptop is running Vista. Both are connected via HDMI. Two questions:
One, how do I STOP my laptop from sending audio to my TV via the HDMI connection? Every tutorial online seems to think I want to do it the other way. I want to use my laptop's internal speakers - specifically, the high-end headphones I keep jacked into lappy. Unfortunately, it really really wants to send audio to the TV and disable everything else; I've tried setting my internal soundcard as the default audio device, but no luck.
Two, external display only, how to do this? There was a prompt when I first set up the HDMI connection, but Vista's [&@%!] for crap menus have buried that option. Also, if I set it for external display onky, will it default back to the regular monitor once I disconnect the HDMI, or will I have to manually re-enable the regular monitor before I unplug everything?
In other words, I need the video going to my TV only, and the audio going to my laptop's headphone jack only.

What happens when you fiddle with the output sounds settings? Does the sound just persist going through the HDMI cable into the TV? Does anything change at all?
What graphics is your laptop using? Intel, Ati, Nvidia? There should be a control panel for either, possibly running in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, where you can specify the video output device.DorostheConqueror wrote:Two, external display only, how to do this?
It does for me anyway, using Intel graphics.DorostheConqueror wrote: ...will it default back to the regular monitor once I disconnect the HDMI, or will I have to manually re-enable the regular monitor before I unplug everything?

Re: TV-laptop setup issues
Not that exact page, but something similar. I've fiddled with the settings on every detected sound device; Set Default does nothing; sound comes out of the TV and only the TV regardless of what I set to default, and persists in coming out of the TV even if I disable the device labeled HDMI Output.
Nvidia graphics card; have no idea what the buck happened, but it seems to be working after unplugging and replugging the cable a couple times. Now it's identifying each monitor separately, and it's sending all the pertinent video bits to Monitor 2 (TV). HOWEVER. It's still displaying my desktop wallpaper on Monitor 1 (laptop screen), which is kind of disconcerting; I'd rather have a black screen than a giant picture of Rainbow Dash fighting an F-14 staring at me while I'm trying to watch something else. It's also bugged out on me a couple times and decided to start sending all the windows opened in Explorer (folder views and such) to Monitor 1, while keeping everything else (desktop, system tray, and worst of all, my pointer device) on Monitor 2. When this happens, I'm basically [&@%!], since my mouse is on the TV and can't interact with anything on the laptop.
I've dismantled it for now, but I'll give it another shot later tonight. One thing I'm not sure of is the HDMI port number; I wasn't even aware that was a consideration. My laptop only has one HDMI port, so I'm guessing that's considered HDMI1? Is there any way to check?
-edit- Nevermind, fixed it. Turns out my audio driver was trying to apply some bullcrap post-processing effects that were overriding my device settings. Disabling these let me route the sound back to my laptop.
