Season 1 is the first book, season 2 is the second book, and season 3 is the third.

It isn't. I watch the first episode of the second season, it started a bit into the second book because the 1st finishes

They don't overlap chapter for chapter, but they generally keep the season = book ratio. However, this will probably change as a) the books become longer and b) the books likely won't be finished before the series.

And, that's a spoiler, Shadow.

The show appears to be leaning quite heavily into the latter half of book 3 at the moment though (if you're from the UK book 3 actually comes in two parts and last night's big event is in the second half) which suggests to me that season 4's going to lean into book 4 a bit, probably with areas like Dorne. Which will likely straighten out a bit when things come round to book 5 which I haven't read yet but know to be around the same titanic size as book 3.

Such a heartbreaking episode :(
I need to reread the books. Don't think I ever finished A Dance With Dragons completely.

Spoilers for EPISODE 9 OF SEASON 3 AS IN THE LATEST ONE AS OF THIS POST DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT/READ A STORM OF SWORDS:
Spoiler:
Honestly I'm glad it finally happened. I don't dislike Robb and Catelyn but I find their arc sooo boring compared to ones like Jaime's (<3) and Tyrion's. Every time we go back to them it's just "hey everyone, look how honourable Robb is and how upset Cat is over everyone dying! Can you see it, can you see it? It sure would be a shame if something exciting happened to kill them all, wouldn't it?

Also I always get slightly annoyed with Robb's stuff because of the way the show portrays Edmure. In the books he's a pretty cool guy that treats the small folk kindly and only really [&@%!] up because Robb's too busy off [&@%!] Lannister bannerwomen to bother updating his most powerful vassal on the war's status or anything else so trivial. In the show he's just some incompetent prick that ruins all of Robb's plans and throws a temper tantrum every time he gets chewed out by anyone. Also the Blackfish is just a thug instead of Old Man Badass Homosexual.

NOTE ABOUT SEASONS AND BOOKS:
For the first two seasons, the show followed a season per book paradigm. However, season 3 will end some time into book 3, bu not the end of book 3. Season 4 will include the last portions of book 3 (Which there is still much left to cover for the shower) and begin a somewhat confusing overlap of books four and five, which happen simultaneously. Starting with the end of this season, the show will no longer follow one season per book paradigm.

That's not what I meant.

Thankfully I also began watching Arrested Development recently so after I finished with the episode I just blazed through ten episodes of that to cheer myself up a bit.

Spoiler:
So was anyone else impressed with the way they handled it? The show's creative staff seems to be getting the hang of things, to the point where a few scenes (Jon scaling the wall and this one, for example) have actually been more enjoyable than the books. My best friend called me crying the other day, and after consoling him for about fifteen minutes, I discovered that he had NO IDEA what was about to take place until it happened. Now, I was skeptical at first, because in the books, you could see it coming from six chapters away. GRRM really loves his foreshadowing and metaphors, and while the reader might not realize the full extent of what's going to happen, the reader knows something bad is going to happen. Book Red Wedding was like a classic slasher flick; it was all about a mounting sense of doom. But then I watched the episode, and he was right. There were clues (Ceirse's Castamere speech, Cat blithering on about the laws of hospitality) but they were subtle and, unlike the books, the show didn't dwell on them. So I can see how someone who's never read the books would get totally [&@%!] by that scene. Plus, I loved the way they snuffed his wife and baby, just right outta the blue n' [&@%!]. HAAAAD. COOWAH.

All in all, I'm mighty pleased, and I can't wait to see how the Giant of Lannister gets on in the finale.

Spoiler:
I didn't think it was very good, to be honest. They removed every single example of Robb's party fighting back. Catelyn should not have the highest kill count for her side. It was more brutal, but I think it lost some of its emotion by not showing them resisting.

Edit: Maybe I was a bit too harsh. I did like the scene, but I expected MORE. I remember reading them claiming this was the entire reason they made the show, for this one scene. And in that light, was it the best that it could of been? I don't think so. I like some of their changes to it, but it could of been better.

Spoiler:
There wasn't much resistance in the books, either. Everyone was drunk, tired, and taken completely by surprise; few lived long enough to even realize what was going on. It was a complete roflstomp.

And I loved how Cat got the highest bodycount... by killing a poor innocent girl. Really drove home how much of a [&@%!] she was. And maybe foreshadowing Zombie Cat?

Spoiler:
I was very happy with this episode. The feel was exactly right, and the final scene, with Cat simply switching off moments before she's killed - that was pretty powerful stuff. And it didn't matter at all that there wasn't as much of that slow buildup of dread that Doros is talking about. There were small hints and for someone who's read the books they were loud shout-outs and I could feel the tension just fine. Anyway, Cat sell the entire wedding scene, there's this dawning realization on her face when the doors close and the music changes, and it's brilliant.

Oh, and I loved Arya in this episode. She was honestly scarier than the Hound in that scene, and not just because it's hard to look scary when you're eating pig knuckles. And it was great that he obviously believed her when she gave that "sword through your eye" line. ;)

I hope the finale doesn't disappoint.
