Naming your character?
Naming your character?
I've always wondered why Beth doesn't have a name generator in ES games that help give your character an appropriate name for it's race. I've heard of a website that had that, but I can't seem to find it. :/

Tamriel Rebuilt is the site you're looking for. Just google 'tamriel rebuilt name generator' and it should be at the top of the list.

A small note, T-R's name gen for Imperials is very third era. I noticed 4th era Imperials have more Italian names in addition to Latin.

Re: Naming your character?
Wow.. is this website for real?
You think they are ever going to finish their project?

Yup, it's definitely for real and let me tell you, playing Morrowind with TR is like finding a brand new TES game.
And about the names - there's also a list of all canon names on UESP: here.

TES definitly would need a name generator like NWN. But if your looking for names i find that the Star Wars universe as somewhat TES lore friendly names, you should try the wookiepedia

Re: Naming your character?
Yes, I kind of wish that they had this. Pokemon, for example, even gives you a couple name suggestions! xD
I was pretty lucky that my character Alarra's name did end up mostly sounding like an Altmer name; I was just trying to fit the general fantasy elf idea, because I'd never played an Elder Scrolls game before and didn't know enough (well, really anything) about the various races' cultures. Likewise, my sister started playing shortly after me and chose a dark elf who she named Rhuna. I can see that fitting, possibly, but it's not quite as Dunmer-ish as it could be. She spent over half an hour looking up random elf name generators and shooting down every idea (and this was before I knew about UESP and its list), and probaby just having a random generator in-game would help with that or even with ES regulars who are stuck.

If they had this, I feel like everyone would have the same few names for each race.

I was just thinking of lore friendly names you could edit yourself.
I'll willing to bet the next ES game will have such a feature.

Well I tend to play as an argonian>_> so exotic names work best, especially when you take their native language into question. All four of my argonians seem to have pretty lore friendly names

Re: Naming your character?
Tamriel Rebuilt's name generator isn't too bad. There used to be an even better one that even created Great House-specific surnames for Dunmer, but it definitely was taken down or moved, because I haven't seen it in years.
I typically just browse the wiki's name lists to get an idea of what the style is, and then play around with names if I'm really lazy. Or steal them, as my username is evident of.

Re: Naming your character?
Yeah, I've come up with a small list of names I might potentially use in games and RPs, and I basically just looked at the canon names, broke them into common beginnings/middle/endings, and mixed them up in order to come up with some on my own. A system like that for a character suggestion wouldn't be bad. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Arena and Daggerfall's NPC names work something like that?

Re: Naming your character?
i alternate between five different names for my characters : Phil, Fred, Bob, George, and Adam.
never been too bothered about it, i simply refer to them in my mind as ''the Hero'' or ''the Champion of Cyrodiil'' or ''the Dragonborn'' etc...

I don't know, my Argoninas usually have "Black Marsh names", not Cyrodilic ones, so the UESP list helps a lot.

Okay, Arvel the Swift totally stole my username, but when it came to Avron, I was a bit inspired. (Had I known he was a stinkin' Hlaalu, though, I would have thought twice!)DikaSmausha wrote:He stole yours. He was a bandit and thief.Avron the S'wit wrote:Or steal them, as my username is evident of.

Re: Naming your character?
I usually use UESP for naming TES characters. What i usually do is pick a name that i like or two names and combine them or use part of it. Such as Psyfalia(Roleplay character in TA2 roleplay in the RP forums on here) was a combination of two names. Or I make up a name that sounds like it suits the race i've chosen.
Avron, behave. Don't make me get Musicman in here.
I randomly chose Dovah as my username as at the time, i was playing Skyrim. Was going to use Arvel the S'wit but somehow, i knew it was best not to.

Finding a name for a game character is like finding a name for a pet: you lead them into the woods and see how they interact with the bunnies and the bears.
