In my eyes, the Volkihar Clan was an important nob to Lore-buffs and long-time Elder Scrolls fans alike, for whom the name has a lot of recognition value. That being said, it was a somewhat weak attempt to do so, and was more of a 'reference to', than a 'reproduction of' the lore.
More importantly though, roleplaying. The Faction exists so that players can choose to roleplay as a Vampire. There doesn't have to any much more to it. That, and it makes it look like Dawnguard is a fully branching questline.
Is it just me or are the Volkihar an obsolete faction?

From a purely gameplay view they are mostly useless, seeing as most rewards can be obtained from the Dawnguard side. But from a role playing persepctive it is very important. A vampire wouldn't really side with the Danwguard and destory the only vampire allies available to them in Skrim.

It is just you
Seriously, it's all personal preference. If you think 'X' Points of damage on a crossbow is better than the rp factor of a castle or house full of vampires, it's your opinion. I too chose to side with the Dawnguard, but screw the crossbow. I use a war axe. Any advantages that matter picking either side for me? Nope. Just preference. Neither are "obsolete."
