Re: Diseases are irrelevant
I'd like to see a disease in which there wasn't a potion or blessing for. A debilitating one. Go home, finally put that cooking pot to good use for a soup, sleep for 10 hours and hope for the best, or risk fainting while walking from town to town.

all the diseases in Oblivion, regardless of how "harsh" they were supposed to be, never panicked me, nor really hindered me all that much, there was always a quick and easy solution, even to Phorphyric Haemophilia. I get the reason why some people would prefer to roleplay diseases and their effects, to give themselves a more organic control of their character's movements and actions and emotions, but equally there are also people that play role playing games because that's what they expect the game to do for them. In terms of a solution then, surely making them optional, just like a more segmented version of New Vegas' Hardcore Mode, would make perfect sense.
If you're going to put diseases into a game then, then that's going to be there for the people who want the game to force them to act realistically, fuzzy screens, taking the time out to recover, hallucinations, all that good stuff; rather than the current solution of trawling your inventory for one of the 34 cure disease potions you've stockpiled and carrying on your merry way, or fast travelling to the nearest city to be cured for free with no resources wasted.

What he said. I think actual visual\gameplay affects are the way to go. That's something even "casuals" would love so theres no excuse not to do it. Also stat drops as well in everything but "very ease mode" so everyone wins?
Imagine catching vampirism and not being able to see during daylight because its so bright?
Or randomly passing out |(forced rest for two hours) and coming to and realizing that during your blackout you drank ALL of your potions midway through a dungeon because you didn't stop by a shrine beforehand?
Or black and white effects until your cured?
They could do all kinds of things to make it more interesting.

This pretty much.Mauin wrote:If it did have more severe effects (like death), then the game is basically forcing your roleplay decisions. That leaves you less control over their story, and in certain situations, you might as well not be roleplaying at all.
I don't like games making roleplay decisions for me, so that's part of the reason why I don't want extra realism in my games. That's what life is for.
I know a lot of people who like real immersion, like freezing, having to eat etc.
But I also know a lot of people who, like me, like to roleplay, but not to such an extend. Sure I'll have my character do only specific quests, have him leave out even very beneficial rewards because doing whatever is necessary to get it is out of character. But having to do such things as drinking to survive? I can't be bothered with that. It'd be the same thing with serious diseases. Sure more harsher effects would be ok (good even), but as soon as it gets to the point of passing out randomly, bad vision and not being able to do certain things at all, you'd have to do something bigger than pressing e while looking at a shrine to cure it honestly. Because if that was the case such diseases would be even more pointless since it would end up being something like this: "Oh damn, I'm getting black dots over my screen? Guess I'll have to leave this cave for now, fast-travel to whiterun, go get my disease cured, than go all the way back, basically wasting 15 minutes walking."
And having mini-Quests to cure bigger diseases would be just as bad. What? So every time my character gets a disease I have to find 5 random plants for some alchemist? That would get repetitive really fast. And being able to make such a potion yourself with Alchemy? Well what if my character isn't an Alchemist?
If you really think about it, 'serious' diseases couldn't be properly implemented without investing a lot into it. And I'd rather have Bethesda work on other things tbh
Make the diseases a little more crippling like 50 stamina less etc. sure. But it really wouldn't change much, since you can always just travel to shrines anyways (they are everywhere after all).

Great replies guys, I see everyone is as disappointed as I am with the extras in the game... If only we had the devs ear on this stuff.. Now that skyrim is old and new comers are experienced role players, maybe next TES will be bumped up a notch and some great challenges will lie ahead...

Given how things have been going with the last TES games, I expect quite the opposite and even more things will get removed and watered down.sevenindasun wrote:maybe next TES will be bumped up a notch and some great challenges will lie ahead...

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
I think the diseases are the most damaging they have been yet. In oblivion where cure disease and poison spells were around they were nearly irrelevant. Needing to carry around potions and find enough potions makes diseases worth being prepared for in skyrim.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
ah, come on. diseases are easy in Skyrim, every city has an alchemist as well as a few shrines, usually two. loads of dungeons have shrines just lying about, there are cure disease potions lying around every dungeon where you might catch a disease, i'd say its still really easy to get rid of diseases
Actually, on Oblivion when you are a stage 4 vampire and you step into broad daylight, the screen gets really bright and your vision actually gets quite bad.CBR JGWRR wrote:Why? They can see perfectly fine in daylight.KryptonianBlood wrote:

That's because the character is actually on fire.philfredobob wrote:ah, come on. diseases are easy in Skyrim, every city has an alchemist as well as a few shrines, usually two. loads of dungeons have shrines just lying about, there are cure disease potions lying around every dungeon where you might catch a disease, i'd say its still really easy to get rid of diseases

Also, Skyrim Vampires are different to Oblivion Vampires anyway.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
hey, you asked why, answered your own question. hehe
(nevermind, im confusing)
yes they are different, but i remember Serana complaining about how bright it was, so i thought that they were still similar. it also gives all that ''your blood boils'' thing, so i assume they also feel similar. (you know, hot and burny)
anyways, catching fire or not, one of the eventual results was bad eyesight for the Oblivion vampire.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
It was rhetorical, and about Skyrim Vampires...
It's just a bit brighter, weaker, and with no ability to recover without external support.
The blood boiling is just how it feels, not actually what happens.
ETA - Skyrim Vampires.
