Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
I feel that the dragonborn point of view in skyrim fades out during the gameplay. After defeating Alduin there are hardly any NPC that will mention it, or anything. In oblivion you will be formally announced as COC by Ocato, and all the guards will praise or cheer at your approach. In Bruma you are known as the savior of the city. The townsfolk will even raise a statue in your honor. You get the imperial dragon armor after ending the oblivion crisis, which is almost to much of an honor, since only emperors have wore it before you. In skyrim you dont get anything. Would have been awesome if you were granted a legendary armor from the blades, that they had been waiting to give the latest dragonborn, or something similar from the graybeards. So tired of hearing the guards say:"You wear the armor of a brigand. Best not cause any trouble on my watch." when walking around in the studded armor, which is the closest you can come a Dovakhiin outfit. I saved the world remeber? Almost as if the few citizens of raven rock are more greatfull than the whole population of skyrim together, after you stopping Miraks influence on the small island..

Re: Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
Your actions were more publicly known in Oblivion. In Skyrim, a lot of your work was done with the Blades, the Greybeards, and Paarthurnax; people don't know that the Blades/Paarthurnax exist at this point, and they hardly know anything about the illusive Greybeards. You spend your time delving in Dwemer ruins for Elder Scrolls and in Nordic Ruins for other things. The only time your actions are really out in the light is when you're fighting Ohdaviing in Whiterun.
Plus, imagine how annoying it would be if you got swarmed by adoring populace every time you entered a town.

Re: Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
Do we reallt want a repeat of Morrowind - "E...e...e...excuse me Nerevarine. It's just that you are a big hero, and I don't know how to talk to -". The actions of the Dragonborn were not widely known, many do not know what age, race or even gender they are.
Raven Rock seems more appreciative because in a small town you notice a newcomer, and when that newcomer saves your island from the influence of an evil priest, re-opens your only source of income, saves the life of your councillor and helps out most townsfolk, your gonna be thanking that person whenever you see them.

The people may not, but the guards do. They talk about it all the time. Even that is annoying for me.

Re: Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
I want "I'm honoured to speak to the Champion of Cyrodill" back for the next game, with appropirate moniker rather than C of C. That felt good that did, recognition from everyone...
Seriously though, all the recognition the PC gets in Skyrim is a quite touching "No matter what happens, the guards will always be thankful for what you've done." from tvarious guards. Nobody else cares...
I want bandits and armies fleeing in absolute terror from the part-dragon, part mortal, all badass player character, I want groups of enemies being flung to the side like Sauron did in the LoTR films in the scenes from 2nd era Middle Earth, I want squadrons of attack dragons at their every whim, I want daedric princes begging for mercy, I want to feel like the almost god of hellfire and death-bringing awesomeness the character actually is.
And Oblivion got that feeling just so much better than Skyrim, particularly the flinging enemies to one side, there's so much fun in rocking a greatsword with a fire enchant and watching the chaos of flying burning enemies, seriously, that needs bringing back, it made my dremora so fun to play in Oblivion, I miss it quite a bit now he's in Skyrim without the flying burning enemies he used to get from his daedric greatsword of the inferno... (Ok, it's a bit unrealistic to fling someone aside with a sword, but he did have maxed blade skill and strength attributes, so he could have done that...)

The thing is, most people don't know who the Dovahkiin is.

Totally agree with OP and all the others, we didn't get much respect!
Sancho joined the companions after he defeated Alduin, and they were still like "but we've never even heard of this guy!" And he was also a war hero by then, and they'd never heard of him? And they want to test his toughness? He's wearing freaking dragons as armor!
Flinging Vilkas aside with a weapon would have been really really satisfying.

Save for lack of recognition from the Companions post-MQ, I found it a relief that few NPCs automagically know my character is the Dragonborn. Clairvoyant NPCs were an immersion-breaker in Oblivion, and one of the reasons I refrained from doing the MQ for that game. Remember, TES universe does not take place in the age of television and cellphone cameras. Unlike Cyrodiil, Skyrim doesn't even have a newspaper. Most information travels by word of mouth.

I don't mind that the Dovahkiin doesn't get a lot of attention from it. Most people probably did not know the real cause behind the dragons' return. At least the guards mention it, and I guess that's good enough for me.

So you didn't do the quest in the Main Quest where you have to close the Oblivion gate outside every city then? Or listen when everyone talks of Kvatch? Or Burma? Or the Imperial City itself?
Everyone knew who the CofC was - he defended their homes and cities from the daedra, a one person army charging into the wastes of Oblivion itself taking the fight to them, talking of victory over the monsters when all hope had faded among those around him/her/it. (covers all bases...)
He really was known by everyone in Cyrodiil, and a hero to the vast majority of the population. The CofC, was quite literally, famous across the land.

Neloth from Solstheim know that we're Archmage of College Winterhold. I'm actually quite surprised that becoming a head of guild is being recognized in the game.
As far as Dovahkiin, Whiterun folks should probably recognize Davahkiin little bit than most of Skyrim folks, I mean we've had two main quest related there, right ?

Re: Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
The Dovahkiin's actions weren't known to most of Skyrim. Apart from slaying dragons, he saved Whiterun and i think that is about it, the citzens know about his deeds. The Dovahkiin ended up killing Alduin in Sovngarde but only he knows that. Everyone else doesn't untill Alduin is no longer sighted in Skyrim and they assume he was killed by the Dovahkiin. Think of this way, the COC defended cities and villages as well as going Spartan on the Daedric hordes in Oblivion whilst the Dovahkiin visited the Greybeards, inflitrated the Thalmor, founded the Blades again(although most players tell them to shove their swords where the sun doesn't shine after Delphine askes them to kill Parthy), a very old Dovah that is the brother of the World eater and forced his way into Sovngarde.
The COC was known due to the nature of his deeds whilst the Dovahkiin wasn't known apart from being someone that has the soul of a dragon and slayer of dragons. Both Heros will be forgotten and yet, they will be remebered. Of course, i hope that TES6 will have the hero become recongised by most of the province if the main quest is suitable. If the hero works in the shadows to stop the main villain, i would expect that he/she wouldn't be recongised and rumours would come up about who killed the villian.

But what of the song of the Dragonborn? They may not know that you, specifically, are the Dragonborn, but that song is about you, how they're all counting on you to save the world. That counts, right?

true, but that's like the crowds singing the chant during the footie match, we're talking about winning the cup and the parade through the town centre on the open top double decker bus
although there is a civil war going on (possibly) and Altmer occupation so you could argue that the Nords still have bigger fish to fry

While there isn't much post game adulation, aside from the guards, what everyone else has said makes sense, the Dragonborn did work in the shadows however we get more than enough praise.
Every guard is jealous that we destroyed the Dark brotherhood, fearful of our weapons give to us by the Daedra, admire our victory over Alduin, and the bones of our enemies we wear.
Every soldier in Skyrim bows their head to me knowing full well I was practically a one man army who brought down the StormCloaks (or Empire). Every person in the main quest understands our actions, and that's all that matters.
And Bethesda did infact manage to capture the moment you all refer to, just they didn't extend it to be a part of every welcome.
When you kill a dragon in a city or town, everyone rushes up to the still smoking stack of bones before you, trying to piece together what just happened. That's the best feeling in the game. Everyone standing around you, dumbfounded at how you just managed to rip such a beast from the sky and proceeded to pummel the [&@%!] out of it before their virgin eyes.
That's all the praise needed really.

Re: Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
It's not that I think everybody should know everything you do, and definitely not some of the more behind-the-scenes things you do with the main plot, but a lot of people who are not in a position to know those things, they DO know. So why don't the people who SHOULD know, know? Especially in Whiterun, which is where the whole thing started. "Wasn't that the guy who bought Breezehome, riding off on a dragon? What a jerk!"
Although, I guess it doesn't make sense that the guards know about the final battle with Alduin anyway. That should probably just be the Blades and the Greybeards. How do the guards know you've saved their souls? Especially since the dragons have not gone away. Unless they are supposed to have gone away, and they're just in game for player satisfaction and nothing to do with in-game reality...
So I guess the problem didn't actually go away, dragons are still on the loose. Ok it makes sense now. (but not the clairvoyant guards - that doesn't make sense.)

Re: Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
Especially since Dovahkiin doesn't actually solve the dragon problem, at all. He defeats Alduin, a problem most of Skyrim didn't even know about, and as far as we know dragons will go on spawning in Skyrim and burning down cities indefinitely. Sorry Skyrim, I guess the dragons are back for good.philfredobob wrote:i never actually thought the Dragons were enough of a problem for the Dragonborn to deserve the amount of praise we already got in-game.
Re: Dovakhiin forgotten and not appreciated
How would the dragons keep spawning? As far as I know only Alduin has the power to raise them.
