Let's leave semantics to the linguists and stay on topic. No need to pick apart some trinkets of wisdom.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
Too add substance to my previous post, it isn't nostalgia if you still go back to these games to play in ways that are simply not viable in later titles. No rose tinted glasses in the (legitimate) criticism of the series.
But on topic, Ob did handle some things pretty well. I always liked Ob lock picking over the Fallout style of Skyrim. A lot of people hated Ob lock picking, but I think that's becasue they didnt know how to use it. Hell, I didnt know how to use it until ten hours into my thief character (I was just auto unlocking).

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
the lockpicking mini game drove me absolutely nuts. especially on harder locks where I'd invariably get the first few and then when the pressure was really on to get that last one I'd choke and have to start all over. can't tell you how many times my laptop almost took a three story dive off my balcony.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
I cheated on the lockpick mini game by hitting the START button to gauge where all the springs were at. I loved manipulating the system.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
On the Xbox 360 (or I suppose with the controller on the PC - didn't try it), you could hit a button to bring up a menu that would freeze the springs after you hit them, allowing you to successfully see which one would hold for you when you hit the command button, because it would be perfectly trapped in the middle of the screen. I used it all the time for the really lose springs in the Oblivion minigame because I hated wasting lockpicks on timing it myself. My cousin actually showed me that. Totally made my day!

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
I actually loved the lockpicking in oblivion. The chance to fail at any moment setting you back? Nice. Oblivion remains to be my favorite out of any ES game just for the sheer feel. Just the looks and the NPCs are delightful. Skyrim is so bland and grey and the NPCs don't stand out as well, still a great game though. It's a shame that there is more morrowind nostalgia than oblivion.

I'm pretty sure of a lot of contempt is still felt for Oblivion because of the change in Dunmer voices.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
honestly, NPC's in Oblivion just looked and sounded so generic and boring, what Oblivion got right was magic and spellmaking imo anyway.House of the Wolf wrote:I'm pretty sure of a lot of contempt is still felt for Oblivion because of the change in Dunmer voices.

I suppose the addition of the sigil stones was a nice shortcut on the path to glory.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
In game? To hold open the gates.
Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
weren't they supposed to be the anchors that held the oblivion gates in place? when you removed them the gates closed, and you got a nifty enchantment.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
Nvm, I ended up looking it up. They function as a means of a temporary portal in oblivion, be it for transport/trade or an actual portal. On the side, it's like a soul gem but alot more powerful, perfect for enchanting
Edit: Keep in mind that during Oblivion, the walls keeping back oblivion were weak, so a temporary rift could stay open forever. Keeping the sigils in their own lands serve as a better defense. Remove the anchor, the gate closes but the tower remains. This is smart because say they want to move the gate? The Great Gate did just that

Sigil Stones were a nice way for me to get a quick enchantment when I wanted one, especially at the highest level.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
True, and they were a cheaper source if you had the supply. I do like how Skyrim did enchanting on the most part right, but could be better

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
and to think at one time you actually had to pay for it or find some other pain in the rear workaround. what were they thinking? thank goodness someone finally came to their senses and gave us sigils instead. more powerful than the normal old enchants too btw. what a sigh of relief.

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
My biggest knock on Oblivion was the gates. They were kinda exhausting, and tedious. I did, however, learn many shortcuts to close most of them quicker.BetaB17 wrote:True, and they were a cheaper source if you had the supply. Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
yeah, too bad we didn't have Intervention, Mark or Recall, but hey, there's this horse just outside the gate for all your fast travel needs ... come one, come all ... one-size-fits-all ... doesn't matter if you're a bosmer or a nord ... glad they made that generic as well. could you imagine having to hunt around until you found a pony or a clydesdale?

Re: Oblivion underrated within the TES community?
I am glad that I don't have to go poor just because I wanted some good gear, but I do mis spell making(though it did get overpowered)
As for skyrim, I just dislike that too many enchantments are dependent on the gear. I can understand some types, but why all? Just give me a full body gear that can boost my magicka only. Though I guess this is bc I could run around in oblivion perfectly invisible killing guards who just don't care
^I ended up closing ever one personally, but due to my hording nature I had to leave full of loot. Every portal made me richer than I ever could in Skyrim. My favorite thing was a full set of armor that allowed me to swim in lava>_>found some interesting things and many shortcuts
