Dual weilding

Post by YDS »

So I finally made a dual weilding character.

I have been hesitant because of the non-blocking ability as well as because of my biggest pet peev......THE SWORD IS ONLY ON ONE SIDE?!!?!?!?????.

Anyway, I feel like I have to kind of tank my way through, good armor and just slash anything in my way(two scimitars do 60hp each with all the dual weild perks which add 50% damage)

Idk, I hope they fix that, really aggravated me.

Welcome to the UnofficialElderScrollsPages Forums!

Dual wielding actually becomes a lot faster with a dagger in your hand, but otherwise, you want to be using light swords, and using light armor. It's okay to use sneak to get close to the enemy, and using poisons are probably the only way you're going to be removing high-level enemies. I have little experience in it, so take my words with a grain of salt.

To clarify Theificka's statement, your off-hand weapon determines your dual attacks' speed

I'm not much of a melee stealth player so I usually go for the beserker style with a dagger or sword in the off and mace in my main hand

Over all light armor is great, unless you use the steed stone>_>. But don't tank your way through, multi task. With steed at hand, heavy armor will help especially once you get the Ebony Mail. Dual wielding can be very nice, but don't be afraid to switch your style up. If the kill calls for it, use a bow. If your taking some heat in battle, switch to one blade(prolly your strongest) and use restoration. Now if you happen to be an orc or to lesser degree redguard, dual wielding is perfect. Mmmm, maybe try dual wielding daggers for some time(and speed) and switch to a full blade when in trouble. The more your diverse yourself, the easier it actually is to level up overall. Tanking though is fine in the overworld but I will promise eventually in a dungeon you wished you took some time

I use dual wielding more as a backup to my archery than a primary tactic, so I'm no expert, but I'd definately agree with the dagger advice above. It helped me to think of it like boxing, a dagger in your left hand can "jab" really quickly and give you time to "slip" their counterattack, allowing you to set up opponents for a power attack. Also like boxing, footwork is everything.

If you are just doing a dual wielding character with no sneak, then heavy armor is the way to go to make up for your lack of blocking. Or you could use light and dodge a lot. I personally use light just for the looks.

Well I started this character last weekend, the problem is I'm like level 22 with only 33 heavy armor(I leveled up my one handed at the beginning of the game)

But now that I'm doing more dungeon delving my heavy armor is increasing more.

Worst are the charus though:/

Just go annoy a giant or two for half an hour or so. That gets's the armour skills up quickly...

Obviously don't forget self healing.

Enchant your weapons with absorb health or stamina. If not then use elemental fury shout to swing faster, but only works if your right handed weapon is not enchanted. Also if you eat a vegetable soup or beef stew, you will be able to do unlimited power attacks for the time the soup lasts since it will give you at least 1 stamina regeneration for the time, and you only need one point of stamina to do a power attack.

i had a cool dual wielding event the other day, i charged bandits, smacked them up a bit then did an ethereal shout (1 word, quick cooldown) and managed to take most of them out that way, popping into reality and out again

if i'd though of it i would have used an increase health regen 300% potion, but it was cool nonetheless

Use a dagger in the left hand. It makes some smacking of common sense, and you can pretend you tucked the dagger away in the folds of your clothes to keep it hidden.

Not really an exploit, it's just a crafted item that lasts for a limited time and increases your combat efficiency.

I decided to make a Dark Brotherhood-esque Dunmer not so long ago, with the intention of purely dual wielding.

In terms of weaponry, I've equipped him with a pair of enchanted Daedric daggers. A few reasons really, with the DB hand wraps you get another half as much damage dealt, they have the highest sneak attack damage, and are the fastest.

Combine all these with a decent sneak ability, and even if you're spotted, chances are you're close enough by then to unleash a killer flurry of blows, especially with some decent enchantments on the blades. I suppose it'd make more sense to also have a sword in your right hand rather than another dagger so as to have the extra damage in a tight spot, but meh, I like symmetry.

He's turned out well really, it can be a bit frustrating on occasions and you have to play very tactically, accurately picking your targets and summing up your enemies, but I miss that when I log off it, it's like an enforced roleplaying.

I was using dual weilding scimtars(pretending that they fit together)

They were up to epic, doing 101 damage. I have a bunch of increase one handed things on.(81% better one handed)

Now I'm back to one handed, using Windshear, the best sword in the game(it's a scimtar with 100% stagger, plus a 30% chance to paralyze when using bash) it does 101 damage now

I just can't get over the fact that blocking, for me, is a helluva lot more useful than an extra blade. After all, you just have to bash them and attack. Works every time. 8)

I never saw a reason for a shield.. so I use restoration. Why take less damage when I can heal it all while recharging my stamina. If the combat worked out better like in oblivion, then maybe I would consider but I don't

Two of my main characters dual-wield (Hunts-With-Fury and From-Blackest-Reaches), and they are far deadlier than Vulom.
When I'm dual-wielding, I tend to shuffle around the enemy and duck in and out of combat (which is a little hard to do with a worn out keyboard and mouse combination). I don't know why, either, since both of those two characters could only be killed by falling off a tall cliff. They both could have taken down most enemies within seconds. Dragons taking a bit longer, though even then combining Dragonrend with constant dual-wielding power attacks made the fights pretty short.

From-Blackest-Reaches usually has a dagger in her left and a sword in her right. She's fast, so I kind of imagine her as a little whirlwind charging from one end of the battle to the other, cutting down every enemy in her path.
Hunts-With-Fury has a sword in both hands, so she's a bit slower. She still destroyed everything in front of her, though.

Meh. I've never been one to use a shield, and only my more magically inclined characters bother to have a spell in their left. Usually I just stick another weapon there to fill the opening. I can't block, but I never block anyway. Just ducking and weaving can be enough protection in most circumstances. Along with my armor, of course. I prefer light armor, especially since I'm more inclined to do stealth characters who dual-wield. Heavy armor characters either wield two-handed weapons or have a shield and sword/axe/mace. Even then I tend to ignore the shield, unless I need to temporarily shut up a loud Draugr who refuses to stop Shouting.

If done right, dual-wielding is fast and deadly. I'd much rather be fast than clunky with a big, heavy shield getting in the way.
I get more use out of spells (mostly conjuration, like Dread Zombie) than I do a shield.

Shields are just as much about preventing damage as reducing it; it's fairly easy to stop a giant from attacking you at all while getting in a couple quick hits, disarm bandits, and throw in Quick Reflexs to make it too easy
Granted, being a walking fortress is nice with deflect arrows and elemental protection, but it's the fun little things like using Shield Charge to knock rieklings off cliffs or just plowing through draugr

But I'm going off-topic

This I found using a shield rather than duel wielding seriously improved my survivability previously terrifying enemies like draugr deathlords became a cake walk, just bash slash and repeat.

I dual wield with my current and I finally did something that caused both weapons to show on my belt. I'm probably not the first to mention this as I can't imagine I'm the first to do it. I had a scimitar in my right hand and it hangs on my left side. I had an ebony war axe in my off hand, but it showed up on my right side. I realize the war axe was on the wrong side and I did have two war axes, one of which had recently been in my primary hand. Maybe the switch from axe to scimitar caused them both to show. I don't know. But it has been cool seeing a blade on one side and an axe on the other.

I much prefer dual wielding to any other kind of fighting in Skyrim. Yeah, it sucks that I can't block, but it forces me to play it smart rather than just hold a slab of metal in front of my face until everything is dead.

I love having to take chances and be vicious in combat. And since I've modded my game up a bit to where I have a party of 6 followers and I face MUCH larger groups of enemies in combat, it takes on a new perspective and I can do my dart-and-weave tactics while the rest of my gang takes hits.

My problem with dual wielding is the power attack animation. In tight spots where draugr everywhere, not to mention ash spawns in Solstheim temple, the long animation is suicide.

I don't like dual wielding at all, not being able to block is such a pain that even when I put in dual wielding perks I just respec my character a few hours later because I don't like it. You lose access to the best combat perk in the game as well called Quick Reflexes. A lot of higher level scaled enemies such as deathlords and similar bandits will do significant damage to you on hit even if you reach the armor cap so unless your a mage or pure archer you sort of need the Quick Reflexes perk or a basic shield block to mitigate the damage to almost nothing, then you can immediately power attack after the hit.

I really would love for dual wielding to be viable and it would if it took the Diablo 2 formula but Skyrim is a bit meh for me.

I know people will disagree with me and tell you to just get 500% stamina regeneration and spam power attacks 24/7 but when a Draugr deathlord gets a critical finish on you and guts you do to the long animation you'll regret it.
