I'm new to modding and have a few questions

Post by PrinceJonathan »

So far I've only loaded the three Unofficial Patches, Galerion's Natural Levelling, Quest Award Leveller, and the Updated Toggleable Quantity Prompt (just tried it out, sold 300 iron arrows 1-by-1 in the blink of an eye, w00t!).

I also loaded OBMM and OBSE, but I have no idea how to really use them.

I was checking out OBMM's new conflict detector and several things are coming up Red and I was wondering if this is a problem?

A few other things come up Green, but I'm told these conflicts are minor and can be ignored.

In the OBMM window my load order is:
Oblivion.esm
Toggleable Quantity Prompt.esp
Knights.esp
DLCShiveringIsles.esp
Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp
Knights - Unofficial Patch.esp
Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp
GalerionLeveling-v11.esp
Quest Award Leveller.esp
Quest Award Leveller - KotN.esp
UOPS Additional Changes.esp
Oblivion Citadel Door Fix.esp
UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp

In the Conflict Detector it shows:
Toggleable Quantity Prompt.esp
+-Knights.esp
DLCShiveringIsles.esp
+-Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp
+-Knights - Unofficial Patch.esp
+-Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp

+-GalerionLeveling-v11.esp
Quest Award Leveller.esp
+-Quest Award Leveller - KotN.esp
+-UOPS Additional Changes.esp
+-Oblivion Citadel Door Fix.esp
UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp

I'm not quite sure what all that means. So far I haven't encountered anything major, no freezing or CTD's. I do get "Windows has encountered a problem" whenever I exit the game though.

And when I was testing the TQP mod when I opened the Console it said:
UOP: Lowlevel processing fix
TQP: Installed Version 3.20
TQP: Initializing...
TQP: INI file not found! Using built-in defaults.
TQP: Initialized!

I have no idea what all that means, what an INI file is, or if not having it will cause problems down the road.

I can answer some of your questions, but I don't know about OBMM.
If you've already insalled OBSE, just search for the file Obse_loader.exe ... it's supposed to be in the same folder where Oblivion is installed. You can create a shortcut of it and use it to start Oblivion instead of the shortcut you had before, and some mods that require this should work.

INI files are text files with the game preferences. Some mods have their own .ini file, but Oblivion.ini (Oblivion main preferences) should be in my documents/my games/oblivion.
I think the OBMM says that there is no INI file avaiable for the mod, not the game- which means there are no custom preferences avaiable for it- which means the game will use, as said, the default preferences. The .ini file should come along with the mod you've downloaded, you may have ignored it and didn't put it in your Oblivion/Data folder- but it's not necessary, as the mod can do without it.

When you click the "launch" button in OBMM, if you have OBSE, it'll automatically launch the OBSE loader instead of going directly to Oblivion.exe. So if you launch through OBMM, you don't need to go through obse_loader.exe. The CTD-on-exit is pretty standard AFAIK; I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't know much about OBMM's conflict detector, but from what I've heard it's pretty overactive. All those things highlighted in red are very commonly used mods, so I wouldn't worry about that at all.

Yeah. I'd add that while it's pretty rare, IIRC some mods don't come packaged with .ini files, with the expectation that you'll create them yourself if you want to tweak options. Usually the process for doing this is detailed in the readme.

I'm not an expert, but I understand the basics of using OBMM, so let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was ok to continue ignoring all those red things.

I'm trying to get Darnified UI to work, but every time I try to load a save file the loading takes forever. Usually for me the little red bar loads 1/4 of the way, pauses for half a second, then smoothly runs all the way to the end, but this took like 5 minutes only to freeze and CTD at the end.

Do I need Wyre Bash? The 6th step said to Darnify Books in Wyre Bash, but I skipped it.

I'm also trying to use it in conjunction with Oblivion XP. A little thing pop-ed up asking something about overwriting something else (I probably should have written it down), I just hit yes. And probably said yes to something I shouldn't have.

Wyre Bash, as far as I've learned, should solve conflicts in mods. If the modder asked for this thing to be installed, he probably meant the mod wouldn't work normally without it.
Lol, and next time I recommend you to wait and read what the message says. Sometimes people edit the same things in some mods, (like the animation files/ skeletons/ areas within the game) so when you chose 'yes' some effects of the mod you installed before may not work. (Maybe that's even what making it stuck)
I suggest you to install Wyre Bash, and see what happens.

Well I got Darn to work, but it causes the frame rate to go through the floor. Oh well.

The message that I clicked yes to said:
"menu\levelup_menu.xml already exists and CRCs do not match. Currently associated omods: darnified ui 1.3.2 omod Overwrite?"

Oblivion XP runs fine though, but I'm looking at how it's leveling system works and I don't think it's possible for me to master everything with the default settings.

How should I set the ini. settings up to be able to master everything by level 50? I already set it to 90 skill points per level and 3 skill points needed to raise a skill by 1. Which means I can level 3 different Skills by 10 per level, plus I raised the training sessions to 10 per level. And still I don't think that is enough.

EDIT: Ok nvm, I crunched some numbers and it turns out I'm good. With a level cap of 50 I'd need 37 skill increases minimum per level to master everything and the way I have Oblivion XP's settings fixed gives me 40 skill increases per level.

I tried to download this mod: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/40478/

It's a tiny little mod that adds a player owned room to Cloud Ruler Temple. Nothing fancy, and it's got a decent amount of storage space. I figure I'll use the desk for Alchemy stuff, footlocker for weapons and armor, the chest for daedric artifacts, cupboard for clothes, and the jewelry box for enchanted rings and amulets.

When I downloaded it, it turned out to be a .rar file. I have no idea what to do with it. I try to open it and a thing pops up telling me to select a program to open it (Adobe Reader, Firefox, Paint, Notepad, Wordpad, etc) or search the Web for a program (This never works. Why is it even there!?!).

How do I get this tiny rar file to work?

.rar is a form of package, like .zip is, and several others. I would recommend to download and install 7-Zip, http://www.7-zip.org/ it opens almost all packs, and 7-Zip is, in format, perhaps the most intense pack. It doesn't necessarily show in your "options for programs", automatically, but you can open files by right clicking on them, and then choose 7-Zip.

Best of all. :)

EDIT: Ok never mind. I shut my PC off and went to bed. Got up later, tried again, and it converted perfectly.

I guess OBMM wasn't detecting the omod conversion data in the zip folder somehow.
