"upgrade" to oblivion?

Post by srr »

Morrowind is the only RPG I've ever played and it was AMAZING. After focusing on one character until I beat all the main quests, I let the game collect dust for several months. So I dusted it off the week and now I am working on a second character - but the same fun isn't there because I know the story and stuff. So it made me wonder if I should try out Oblivion. Do you morrowind players like oblivion? Do you think it's better/worse or worth it/not worth it to get?

You should go for it It adds a new story which seems to be what you want or you could just roleplay your own story in morrowind. But if you like to explore and look for stuff than stick to morrowind which in my opinion, except for the graphics is way better then Oblivion

Obliuvion is OK butmuch shorter.

Did you finish all the factions quest? as i know you can only do one house at a time in Morrowind. so ti is impossible todo the quests with same characters.

I actually have a couple of characters that didn't even go near any of the main quest lines. well except being attacked by dark brotherhood.

Please, I beg you, don't do it!
For a number of reasons:
1. Lore is pretty much non-existant in Oblivion
2. The stupid dunmer voices in Oblivion
3. The controls are different, so if you go back to Morrowind, you'll keep pressing 'R' to switch person, when you mean TAB
4. I thought the combat system was worse
5. The inventory sucks (although you can get mods to fix it)
6.Combat is rubbish (in my opinion, loads of people thought the combat was better)
7. The graphics are too generic-fantasyland-ish for me, they're all "Everything is beautiful" as opposed to "This world is real, people live their lives here"

There's a really good quote that I found somewhere:
"Oblivion is a great game, but Morrowind is a great world"

Me, I prefer the world.

it's possible to be part of 2 great houses
If you join House Telvanni or House Redoran first, then slay Orvas Dren or convince him to allow you to become Hlaalu Hortator (you will do this for the Main Quest), you'll be able to speak with Duke Vedam Dren about the Camonna Tong, and receive the message, Yes, I heard that you were the Hortator of House Hlaalu. You could not hold that rank if Ovas Dren did not wish it. Since you already have some agreement with Orvas Dren, I will name you the new Grandmaster of House Hlaalu. Followed by a raise in Hlaalu rank which can be repeated for more free promotions

If you check then, you'll see that you are a Hireling in House Hlaalu and can do the quests, although some conflict, like e.g. Odirniran/Telvanni at Odirniran, where being in both Telvanni and Hlaalu you'll have to kill everyone there; also Rethan Manor will appear and it is required that you kill the owner of it.

You can acquire two strongholds, but Vedam Dren won't issue you another contract, so you'll have to steal it from him then unbuild the Hlaalu stronghold via the console

I think you should go for it. Oblivion may not be as good as Morrowind, but it's at least worth a try.

It strikes me that if you can't find pleasure in repeated playthroughs of one of the most diversely immersive gameworlds ever crafted, Oblivion is perfect for you.

Oblivion - the overriding thing that bugs me about the game, is the fact that it simply never leaves you to your own devices. Safety-nets, training wheels, hand holding, whatever; Oblivion won't even TRY to let you find a location on your own.

Remember those bits in Morrowind, where you were given [bad] directions, and had to keep referring to the journal, and using the geography of Vvardenfell to find your way there? Well, Oblivion takes all that away. With the Arrows of Doom, and the Tom Clancy Elder Scrolls Tactical Awareness HUD, no longer will you be surprised by a ruin, no longer will you stumble across a cavern of riches, and not once will you actually gain satisfaction in reaching you destination.

The navigation compass 'thing' that Oblivion forces upon the gamer (it's impossible to disable on 360 or PS3) destroys all sense of personal discovery. It patronises you at every turn.

More bad things about Oblivion:
*complete lack of story or characters - where Morrowind's story concerned (amongst other things) potential redemption of Godhood, the desire for power, the maluable nature of history and myth etc, Oblivion makes do with 'Bad Guy wants to invade Cyrodiil and---- er... that's it! Stop him!!'.
*less weapons and skill choices than Morrowind
*Cyrodiil is just so boringly obvious - if you've opened up a book on medieval Europe, or played any other (lesser) RPG, then you've seen everything it has to offer

However!!
I still recommend you get Oblivion. Why? Because it's still the best in the its self-created genre of first-person (fantasy) RPG's. No other game gives you the freedom that TES games give you - and Oblivion is, after all, the 'current' TES title.

It has it's perks, too: if you're a keen role-player (which it possibly doesn't sound like it), then you'll find its complete lack of story a bonus - as in Morrowind you were the Nerevarine (if you chose to do the main quest that is), but in Oblivion you're simply a no-body, just whatever character you want to be. Some like it that way, and it undeniably lets the player have more control over their own personal characters motivations and nuances.

And for me, and others, the combat is superior; it simply feels, looks, and sounds more satisfying.

Bottom line; is that you should give it a go. It may be Morrowind's less intelligent, more patronising, flashy, facile younger brother, but it is still an awful lot of fun.

Tourist, you took up half the page. :P

Morrowind is the second best rpg of all time, oblivion is the third, I highly recommend it, new quests and new story. Main complaint- Cruddy main quest. Main like- Mages Guild, actual story, not random odd jobs and fast travel.

This was one of my favorite things about Morrowind. The history of Nerevar, the Tribunal and Dagoth Ur is murky and you have to read more about it to reveal the true picture. Dagoth Ur is obviously a mad bad god, but the Tribunal are less obviously good or bad and belief in them ranges from false Gods to the hero saviours of Morrowind. You have to advance in the plot and learn about them from various sources to uncover the true history of what really happened in the past at Red Mountain.

Oblivion was that kind of subtlety.

The world in Oblivion was also pretty boring. It all looked like the English countryside with minor variations. The towns all looked European. Morrowind had crazy looking Telvanni towers and towns, awesome looking local architecture in Vivec, towns and forts built by the Empire, poor fishing villages made of wooden shacks, etc. You had regular countryside as well as the bleak grey barren wastelands with regular ashstorms. It just had a way more interesting and varied world.

A quick look-see reveals you joined in 2006, but have just 8 posts... look, we need guys like you to keep up the pro-Morrowind end of things on the UESP. Post more, damn it! :D

Dagoth Ur? Well, as I'm pretty much an atheist, I love things that encompass not just the rigid duality of Good & Evil - which are generally just sheer artiface - but embrace the reality of the greys inbetween; I don't think Dagoth Ur was a bad-anything. His weakness was essentially betrayed by the 'heroes' of Red Mountain (including Nerevar). So if there was any inherant evil in him, it stands as metaphor for all our evils, and the temptations of power/knowledge. As we know, the Goodguys fell to that same temptation, they simply lied about it. So who is the greater evil? The one who was weakest, and fell? Or those that connived and controlled to keep the nature of their powers secret?

That's exactly why I genuinely loved Morrowind, it had real depth to its characters, story, and backhistory; just as the world of Vvardenfell felt real, so too did the myth and history - tangled up with human failing and temptation. Compared to that, Oblivion's nothing but a pop-up book. And a bad one at that...

Dargoth Ur, the Tribunal/False Gods, the Daedra, and even Nerevar; all were responsible for the plight of Morrowind. And that's setting aside the rights and wrongs of the Ashlanders, and the Empire. Morrowind's narrative is probably the finest I've ever seen in any game, and it really does justice to the myths and themes it was closely inpsired by (the epic of Gilgamesh, Norse mythology, Christian theology etc). I understand that some people can't be bothered with all of that, but it is also - for me - proof undeniable that Morrowind is infinitely superior to its banal successor. If any game deserved BAFTA awards and true artistic recognition from mainstream bastions of culture, it's Morrowind.

Wow... pretty much all the details I wanted to say have been said. Really, Morrowind feels bigger both in scale of the island and the story. The thing that really brings it together for me is both the varied geography and the numerous factions, especially the great houses.

Oblivion is good for more action based gameplay, perfect for your barbarian characters to unleash havoc.

Morrowind is good for an epic lord of the rings style game. Epic, political... great fun in the long run.

well Oblivion may have it's downsides, but it's still funf to fiddle arround with. don't expect the story depth or background developed on characters.

Yes, oblivion is an intreeging game first you may want to learn the new upgrade's to oblivion, when I first started I went all the way across the land by foot, just to find there's a button that does that for me

Go for it.

Its a lot easier to get into from the beginning, it looks great, and they have overhauled the game system to declutter it and in most instances, improve it. The skills system is a bit different, I found it more elegant and neater than before.

Don't buy Ob expecting Mw. Oblivion is a bit like Return of the Jedi to Morrowinds Empire Strikes Back (I hope you liked both star wars sequels. if not, ignore)

Even if you just look at it as a sequel to Morrowind which happens to fill out more of the world, there's still a lot of replay value in it. I played MW for over 700 hours. I have played Ob for around 700 hours. Even if you play it for only 50 hours you are still buying something which blows all competition away in the fun per $$/€€ stakes.

I forgot,

the story in MW is way more immersive than OB, but the updated game surrounds you with people who talk to each other and go to sleep a night, there are thunder storms which have made me jump, etc and all of the other treats with the current technology. An awful lot of my MW time was spent on self-motivated missions anyway, so to have a luscious world like that of OB to be let loose on is enormous fun.

It is great to see what a Daedroth 'really' looks like, and some of the quests in OB are as good as I have seen in any game anywhere.

Oh, and your character won't spent 3 game-weeks shuttling ebony armour from a Daedric ruin to a scamp in Caldera just because you wanted to sell it ..

IMHO, Oblivion>>>>>>Morrowind.

Why? The combat in Morrowind was terribly boring. You just kept clicking hoping you would hit stuff. The world, while it did have a lot of great story and lore, seemed bland and repetitive.

Oblivions world has stuff going on in it. For instance, you can find adventurers in dungeons, people eat, sleep, and have conversations. Also, if you want, you can remove the food in someones house, and place a poisoned apple either on the table or reverse pick pocketing, they might eat it and die :Twisted Evil: When your walking outside you can find deer running around and sometimes you might seem imperial legion forestors or just random NPCs wandering through the wilderness.

Also, the Dark Brotherhood, the thieves guild, the arena, and mages guild are all very well done. Also, the lighting and atmosphere of the dungeons are great. Sometimes, you can also come across traps in the dungeon as well.

The Shivering Isles expansion is also spectacular, that adds a very large new area to explore and exotic creatures for you to fight. The dialog can also be hilarious. You really feel like your in the realm of a mad god. The story in Shivering Isles is better than Oblivions main quest to.

It would definitely be worth getting Oblivion.

I have only played Oblivion on the 360, but it controls much better than it did in Morrowind. The way you use your shield is better, and the different types of attacks were actually useful. Also, using spells along with regular attacks worked better. The hot keys were also better than cycling through your list of spells.

Also, that wasn't the only thing I though Oblivion improved upon, and I agree the TES isn't about combat.

So its more fun to click 40times to hit three times?
You stand right in front of your target, and miss with a sword?
I would say Oblivions Combat is more realistic.

Hmmm... Sure, anyone can fling a sword around, but if you're not used to the weight and reach, you're not going to hit as often, especially with ranged weapons, sure, you don't do as much damage when you do hit, do they're both realistic to some extent. Look, I don't want to start an Oblivion Vs. Morrowind thread, so let's leave it at that.

Don't let this turn into an Oblivion vs. Morrowind battle, I think we can all agree that each game has it's ups and downs, try for yourself, make your own opinion.

I think they are about equal. Morrowind destroying Oblivion in the story and mystery department, Oblivon winning in graphics and controls.

Except for the Tribunal no one hates the 6th House as they hate they're methods. Unlike any other House where you should go and ask for entrance in that house. The 6th House is recruiting people by giving them blight or strange dreams. I mean in the main quest you recieve Corprus without asking, i don't think that's fair. And you may probably avoid this yet all the people caught in the ashstorms or who enter in contact with blighted creature have no option. SO that' is the first reason why everyone hates the 6th House a.k.a. House Dagoth.
So in my opinion the "Good guys" are waaaaay better than Dagoth.

Sorry for the off topic, above yet I had to quote him. Anyway back to topic:

Go for it!

Yet

Oblivion is worser than Morrowind because:
- it has the Orientation Arrow, which makes me feel retarded;
- it give someone the ability to be head of a guild without ever knowing the guild abilities (ex. you can be the Mages Guild head without knowing the most rudimentary spells)
- small amount of stuff (both ordinary and special (unique or with enchantements))
- small amounts of Factions
- plus most of them I cannot even call them factions (ex. Knights of White Stallion which has two members (including you) and a shack outside Leyawin))
- All of the faction missions are "you must save the world" (except Arena) which really gets boring after a while
- the skills of Oblivion have no lacks (ex you can wield a sword like an expert without having a decent point number) (~except you cannot use its perks)
- Vampires are useless in Oblivion; in Morrowind you get special part in the game which you usually couldn't (read this guide)
- missing of various useless magic (Levitation, Mark, Recall) or making magic like Unlock useless ("need key"~[my reply to that]"why should I use keys if I'm a magician or a thief, i don't use such items in that classes")
- in Oblivion you will get only Houses while in Morrowind besides several residence you also get a stronghold
- people react strange in Oblivion (ex. I walked around imperial City naked with my zombies after meand a guard asked me: "If you see something suspecious, please report"~if running around at night with former villagers, now zombies, after you and don't look suspicious than sure those guards are prepared for anything; unlike Morrowind where people would have react very taunting)

In Oblivion, however, is better than Morrowind in:
- as leader (of several Factions) you have access to unique stuff (ex. as the Head of Mages Guild you may use "The Alchemist Box")
- people move around and act
- you have acces to horses
- Fast Travel with Companions which in Morrwind does not happen (@ least not without a mod)
- several caves have misteries and trapes
