Re: Diseases are irrelevant
I kinda agree on the melee damage, but not on the pickpocket. The main area to do pickpocketing in are cities. Every city has at least one shrine where you can get cured. If you're dungeon crawling or out in the wilderness, which is where you'll get the disease, you typically don't have a need for pickpocketing. Lockpicking is more of an annoyance then, but unless you always have trouble picking locks, this won't make a difference, either.

There's almost no stat reduction.Br3admax wrote:Your hilarity is only matched by your arrogance, oh rolling-paired-of-eyes one. You wanna throw down, 'cause I'll throw down.
It's not for immersion. It's stat reduction. What's the point in diseases? What's the point of stat reducing spells? What's the point of weakness spells? What's the point of alcohol making you weaker? What's the point of magic? What's the point in doing anything except eating cheese and doing the fish stick? Your playing a roleplaying game; that's the point.
That's the point. The disease has almost no effect on you because it only takes a few points off your stats. A real disease would destroy your speed, endurance.... everything. Skyrim diseases are not even near potent, as opposed to diseases in, say, Morrowind that would destroy stats and become an annoyance, but not exactly a crippling disturbance.

The pickpocket should be replaced with move at 25% less speed, lock pick should be replaced with something that affect your archery like steady or can't zoom in or zoom sways or jes aiming sways altogether....

Well at low levels, when diseases really matter, it can be death. Someone stronger should be less burdened by disease.VirtualWeasel wrote:There's almost no stat reduction.Br3admax wrote:Your hilarity is only matched by your arrogance, oh rolling-paired-of-eyes one. Re: Diseases are irrelevant
Max I'm not so upset about the affects of illnesses in the game I jes wish there was some more server ones, when I get poisoned from a spider the affects are noticeable (drain health) but I don't notice a disease that much.. I brought this topic up because I was playing one day and had 3 diseases and didn't notice until I was looking at affects for a blessings affect.. Go figure I was down stamina one handed and lock picking... Problem is I was picking master locks with no perks at the same success rate as b4 I caught the disease...
And diseases are good early on, so they should level with me to an extent... If I lose 25 stamina at level 1 it should progress to 30 at level 25 and 40 at max level... Not too drastic but you know it's there

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
Diseases are pretty much annoyances, it's ridiculously easy to cure them (for free), and they do almost nothing to impact gameplay, although you do notice when you run out of stamina and such faster, it doesn't make too big a difference.
If they made them harder to cure, they might be a liability when you keep that disease, they also need to make a more realistic disease system, it gets worse before it gets better and it leaves your body after a certain period of time.
Poison has the same problem, it goes away too easily and is too rare, but at least that it takes a pounding out of anyone's health given the time.

I think that the diseases should have affects that are much more apparent, kind of like concussions in Fallout, for example.
Or if it would do Morrowindesque text descriptions of how much your joints [&@%!] hurt if you have Rockjoint.
Something that shows a little bit more viscerally that, hey, something's very wrong with your body.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with this. If you want to roleplay that your character is suffering terribly from a disease, then roleplay it. You don't need the game to force that upon you, and frankly, it's better that they don't. Excuse me if sometimes I just want to sit down and play a game. If I want "realistic" diseases, I'll go out and get sick in reality (but I won't because that's stupid, though it happens whether I want it to or not).Br3admax wrote: It's not for immersion. And those saying diseases have more of an effect in earlier titles... They don't.
They do the same basic thing as diseases in Skyrim: minor stat/attribute/whatever reduction. My older Oblivion character had over 30 diseases and I never noticed any of them until I looked at my active effects list. You're just as likely to miss them in older games as you are in Skyrim.
The point is that it's a game: games are not supposed to be realistic. Effects that make the game more like actual life should be kept optional and not forced upon the player. I don't know about anybody else, but I play games as an escape from reality (especially when times are rough) and for fun. I really don't want things in the game to mirror what's going on outside of the game.

Diseases in Skyrim just don't negatively affect you as much as they probably should. A small reduction to stamina or maybe using an extra lockpick or two? I'm not sure they even qualify as diseases.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
You kids these days, thinking Morrowind diseases were tough. I remember Daggerfall Diseases. Just look at these. There were seventeen different diseases in the game. Sixteen would kill you. You need that fear of disease in the game, I think. It teaches you not to bother or touch the rats or slimy abominations you found in some filthy fit. They don't need to kill you, their germs will do that for them.
It was rather realistic. If you got bit by some filthy rat in the middle of nowhere without the proper gear to tend to your wound, you would die.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
I remember Brain Fever from Daggerfall it was my third character, my first to reach an ending of the main quest, and because it lowered my personality and i had not been the most decent citizen in Hammerfell so no one would interact with me. So me Character was doomed to die
I would like diseases to get worse with time but nowadays Bethesda holds your hands a lot of the time in TES games so i do not think it would fit with diseases killing you. Maybe a disease that lowered your health and/or stamina with say 10% for everyday you had it and maybe that would make you weak, weaker in time if not cured, but will never directly kill you. Because it is a % drain you get it would be an equal punishment in lower levels and up til you started going Legendary on your skills. Of course in lower levels you will be more needing the 10 % but everything is harder in lower levels..
Just me two cents

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
Idk, some diseases should be created in phases, similar to vampirism. The longer you last, the worst it shall become. If its just a minor disease that reduces ur health by a small fraction, no harm right? But what if within 3 days it has grown worse, and from there the fraction increases to the point that your too frail. Not saying every disease should act like this, but should carry a chance that it will evolve. For most diseases, a shrine or simple potion shall fix you up fine and dandy, but the more severe must require a monk and a fee. I can see curses making a return, but rather rare and only triggered by certain actions, like stealing from a coffin of a dead citizen. Still can be cured, but acts like a punishment. I would also love poisons to make a rise in the wilderness, be it eating certain ingredients or raw foods, and a small chance when harvesting. Not like your usual 5 seconds, but severe none the less. Idk, all this could be added by mods, but I really wished the vanilla was more challenging

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
Hahaha this made me laugh, Daggerfall disease is hardcore. TBH I like the sound of that, I have always felt like disease in Skyrim was so pointless due to how having the disease basically didn't effect your character. The worst effect of disease in Skyrim is people constantly saying something like you look ill, better not get me sick.AKB wrote:You kids these days, thinking Morrowind diseases were tough. The most I have ever been effected by a disease in TES games was in Oblivion when I caught some sort of disease that gave me stunted magicka in the middle of a dungeon on a character that relied heavily on spells. Trying to finish that dungeon with no magic was a nightmare, I was using magic for summons and for healing! Although I did end up raising several other skills I hadn't been using.

Re: Disease are irreverent
In the race to appeal to a broader audience the TES series has systematically killed anything and everything even remotely challenging. The difficulty slider does practically nothing in Skyrim other then making the MOBs have a bigger/smaller HP pool and do a little more/less damage. This casualisation becomes even harder to endure if you've played Arena,Daggerfall,Morrowind or games like Demon/Dark Souls. To get an idea:jello wrote:try increasing the difficulty level. i have a feeling that in order to survive on the harder difficulties, you need to be on your A game, ensuring that you always have the advantage, even in regard to diseases. that being said, being diseased on adapt or easier, which is where i usually play, hasn't affected my gameplay at any time since i started playing, but i haven't been playing very long.sevenindasun wrote:Skyrim is missing out on diseases seriously.. I've gone days even in game weeks with a common disease an was never really affected by it, ok that's skyrim, why wasnt the blight introduced in dragonborn, even curses would have seriously made me focus on creating alchemy potions to carry around... The way it is now really isn't a threat, remember when you caught something and you hurried your but back to a town to be cured... I miss that, I love skyrim but I guess there's always something we wish for...
The starting Dungeon in Arena would make you pull your hair out because of it's difficulty, the diseases in Daggerfall (which are by far the most deadly in all the TES series) would make you cower in a corner, getting cursed in Dark Souls is as good as playing the game with one hand tied behind your back etc.
With Skyrim the low number of diseases and the "noobish" severity attached to them makes the overall feature/mechanic a big disappointment.I would also like to point out that Skyrim,Lorewise, should have a lot more diseases if only around the area of Dawnstar.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
The only "disease" that holds relevancy in Skyrim is Sanguinare Vampiris, and that's because it's a pain in the butt to "cure" if you let it go for too long.
To me, that's kinda shoddy. I'd just be echoing everyone else, though, so I'll just say that I agree and think diseases should be a little more consequential. Maybe if they had a system more similar to the "Hardcore Mode" of Fallout: NV, they'd have a setting in which diseases actually mattered.
Oh, and I'm kinda miffed that Lycanthropy doesn't have it's own pathogen, as well.

I know what you mean about the only disease worth any kind of concern in Skyrim being vampirism, but even then Bethesda offer you an easy way out if you've got Dawnguard, where and then it's cured, no massive storyline to find a cure, no difficulty or shunning, making even vampirism a walk in the park...

Re: Disease are irreverent
I love the point about Dark Souls. In Dark Souls, a curse was simply the worse thing that could happen to you. If you were cursed, you die and respawn with your health reduced to half until you undo the curse, and you can't use humanity (which you need to revert to human and kindle fires). Only two enemies in the game can curse you (annoying frogs and a boss), but this does several things to set the mood going forward. Before this, fighting an enemy generally allowed you to employ a number of strategies, and there wasn't really a terrible penalty for error before. However, the frogs start appearing when the game's difficulty starts rising. It really did mark the point in the game at which you just couldn't screw around, period. One mistake would set you back so terribly that you had to play the game better or fail.Mefris Elmek wrote:getting cursed in Dark Souls is as good as playing the game with one hand tied behind your back etc.

Re: Diseases are irrelevant
I think diseases should be for more than just stat reduction. BUT that would be more work for BGS.
I love roleplaying, but roleplaying that Rockjoint is more serious than it is in game doesn't hold any water for me. And the reason is because we've played other rpgs where it's been done better, whether ES or otherwise.
I always refer to Fallout. In that game you are always contending with a few negative effects. (also there are negative effects on your vision!)By the the time you're level 50 in Skyrim you're looking at upwards of 20 positive effects on your character with OCASSIONALLY one or two negative.
The positive effects obviously need no RP assisstance at all.
If characters had to choose a divine to worship and exclude all others, that would make it a bit more difficult to cure diseases. If you're out of the potion, that is.THIS is something that I do roleplay.(as well as limited standing stone choice)
If Skeever diseases were more vile, we'd all be taking them out at range most times. But since diseases are irrelevant, we gotta RP it.
