Diseases are irrelevant

Post by sevenindasun »

Skyrim is missing out on diseases seriously.. I've gone days even in game weeks with a common disease an was never really affected by it, ok that's skyrim, why wasnt the blight introduced in dragonborn, even curses would have seriously made me focus on creating alchemy potions to carry around... The way it is now really isn't a threat, remember when you caught something and you hurried your but back to a town to be cured... I miss that, I love skyrim but I guess there's always something we wish for...

All part of the simplification of TES. While some parts are welcomed, like the removal of Oblivions levelling, others such as this, suck that they were removed.

I can see how seriously crippling diseases could confuse and disfranchise people, but the devs could have had some fun creating some charmingly annoying ones...

try increasing the difficulty level. i have a feeling that in order to survive on the harder difficulties, you need to be on your A game, ensuring that you always have the advantage, even in regard to diseases. that being said, being diseased on adapt or easier, which is where i usually play, hasn't affected my gameplay at any time since i started playing, but i haven't been playing very long.

TBF, the permenant scamps can be quite useful if they get into combat. 4 extra (respawning) things to get hit by the enemy anyway...

I don't find that in the course of my playing Skyrim I've been infected any less frequently than I was in Oblivion.

It's not how much you get sick that bums me out... It's the severity of the sickness... Like corpus or forms of the blight, even the encumbrances curse could be fun, but dispel is long gone, although they could have added ingredients that dispel or cure curses or the blight, which is not a common sickness you need something other than a cure potion to rid yourself.. That what I'm driving at here

I don't think I've ever been hindered by anything that's supposed to be an "affliction" in Skyrim as opposed to Oblivion. Even things like lycanthropy or vampirism, neither of those in Skyrim, to my mind, hinder you in any way at all; and if they do, nowhere near to the degree of Oblivion: I remember being at a maximum stage of vampirism, and dying pretty much every time I fast travelled anywhere because I couldn't get into a building before the sun damage killed me on my way there. Whereas in Skyrim, my character is almost exactly the same in terms of focus as the one in Oblivion, and is even the same level currently, and he can kill just about anything in the world in a maximum of two shots, sneaking or not, daylight or not, vampirism or not. Where's the penalty for the power?

I believe the Blight was absent in Dragonborn because it ended when the Nerevarine defeated Dagoth Ur.

It's an annoyance in Skyrim. Get a disease for the 101 millionth time due to a skeever or a wolf and you will midly annoyed. The only disease that makes me wish i had a cure disease potion is the vampire one, but only if it's a roleplaying character or i'm in the mood.

They missed a big opportunity as Skyrim is often regarded as the most harsh province to live in so it is believable that the nords would have to suffer a lot of diseases that are only in Skyrim.

Well, on that note, diseases would probably be much less prevalent in a cold, potentially sub-arctic climate than they would be in, say, a temperate climate, or a hot volcanic one. I can imagine, then, that diseases in Black Marsh and Valenwood would be much more virulent and severe.

They are, certainly in Black Marsh. See Knahaten flu for one example.

Despite what TV shows like House would have you believe, having a disease doesn't necessarily mean that you're incapacitated at death's door. In real life, many diseases are nothing more than annoyances. The game is already full of things that want to kill you outright, I'm glad the developers saw fit not to have Skeevers transmit Bubonic plague.

The thing is, though, if diseases are just a minor annoyance in the worst case, Bethesda might as well get rid of them in the next game. They simply don't matter. Just another feature of TES series that gets flushed down the toilet to not bother the gamers of today with annoyances.

RPG logic says that you should have a way to get rid of diseases. Because you can catch them almost anywhere at anytime, they shouldn't just kill you.

I don't think anyone said that diseases should kill you, especially not right away. Besides, you have Cure Disease potions and the shrines cure you of diseases, as well. Oblivion and Morrowind even had Cure Disease spells.

I fail to see how diseases are irrelevant then. They have to cripple you to have a point for you? Because that is what it sounds like you are saying.

Besides immersion, what exactly is the point to them, oh wise one?
They don't do anything to you, and the reason why they don't is because the game would become difficult and frustrating if they did.
And god knows the general population these days couldn't handle a tough game if it grew legs and started slapping them around.

Your hilarity is only matched by your arrogance, oh rolling-paired-of-eyes one. You wanna throw down, 'cause I'll throw down.

It's not for immersion. It's stat reduction. What's the point in diseases? What's the point of stat reducing spells? What's the point of weakness spells? What's the point of alcohol making you weaker? What's the point of magic? What's the point in doing anything except eating cheese and doing the fish stick? Your playing a roleplaying game; that's the point.

What VirtualWeasel said. They don't have to cripple you, but they should be noticeable. In Morrowind (and I think Oblivion, too), they reduced your attributes, slowing you down, making you weaker, lowering your carry weight, etc... What do they do now? Lockpicking and Pickpocket decreased by 25%? The horror! And yes, I know Skyrim has a few diseases that decrease your health/magicka/regeneration/damage by a marginal amount, but they still have less of an impact than the diseases in earlier titles had.

I agree, diseases should be noticeable. They should make you want to find a way to get it cured. But, I think skyrim does ok at this. 25% reduction in pickpocket can make a huge difference, the same with a 25% reduction in melee damage. Just because that particular disease doesn't really affect you, doesn't mean that it doesn't affect anyone.
