The Elder Scrolls is one of the few examples of vampires I've seen where feeding on blood wasn't something they needed to do in order to be at their most powerful. I have to wonder what sort of vampires you're familiar with if becoming stronger when they feed (Or, to put it differently, becoming weaker if they don't) is backwards. Especially with your earlier comment about wanting vampires to not have a requirement for blood.

Vampires drink blood. It's kinda their thing.

Probably because it's that little thing called the Elder Scrolls.
From the games I've played, having Vampires become weaker as they feed is the normal. You take a mod that makes Vampires stronger as they feed and it becomes abnormal. You seem to be forgetting that we're talking about Elder Scrolls Vampires here. Not Earth Vampires. Earth Vampires are not the same as Elder Scrolls Vampires. I'm talking within the Elder Scrolls, not Earth.

I saw one person put it rather well when they said that Elder Scrolls Vampirism is treated as a disease. They only drink blood to combat it and return to "humanity." Hence, mortal blood is the only way for them to regain what was lost when they became a Vampire in the first place. With that in mind, feeding increasing Vampiric powers does not make sense as it would have the exact opposite effect as intended. You wouldn't be getting yourself back, you'd just be getting worse. More "evil," if you were a more neutral or good person.

Mods that reverse Vampirism are trying to make Elder Scrolls Vampires more like Earth Vampires, and I really hate that. It's like they're trying to ruin something that's unique and make it the same as everything else.

Edit:
And I found the little explanation. It's on the mod page for Vampire Aesthetics
The explanation:
Spoiler:
WHY NOT MAKE VAMPIRES "BETTER"?

Because I think Bethesda's Vampires are fine. It's an interesting new take on the disease, and I completely understand how the apparent jump in logic was made that gave them the idea to do it this way.

It starts out as a simple disease. It makes you tired. Not a huge deal. Then, you sleep, and it takes full effect. You awaken undead, plagued by nightmares and feeling a desire to feast on the blood of mortals.

But why do you need to feast on the blood of mortals?

Because your body wants to be mortal again.

That's why feeding LOWERS your Vampiric power. By consuming mortal blood and getting it back in your body, you've brought yourself away from death's grasp. You've given up power in exchange for humanity. But by allowing yourself to continue in unlife, by abstaining from all things mortal and living, you delve deeper into the world of undeath, and gain more power by doing so.

Convoluted? Hell yes. But I think it's awesome.

That would be all fine and dandy if it was represented outside of game mechanics. But, as it is, most vampire NPCs are like your standard vampires of earth lore, requiring the blood of mortals to stay alive or supplement their powers, actively avoiding the sun, sleeping in coffins, etc.

There is also certain expectations when somebody uses the term "vampire". While making differences to make something unique is all well and good, there's a certain point where you shouldn't really do that anymore. If I had a tool that I said was a sword, but it was a sphere rather than a pointed lump of metal, and actually used for gardening rather than hitting people with it, most people would tell me I'd have no business calling it a sword. And they'd be right.

To remove everything that makes a vampire a vampire, and still call it one, is not unique. It is merely misleading.

Yeah, pretty much. It depends on the character. I tend to create sneaky archers that rely on potions and poisons, who think of werewolf form as something they use to get out of really tight situations, or to really lay into a group they're [&@%!] at. If you play it right, it's pretty damn powerful. But for characters that focus on melee anyway, yeah it seems pretty pointless.

As for the sun damage thing, yeah, I gotta say, I'm not all that bothered by it. If I want my vampire characters to fear sunlight, then... they fear sunlight and don't go outside in the day. Simple as that.

In other words, you prefer Earth Vampires and think Elder Scrolls Vampires are entirely wrong. That's kinda what it sounds like to me.

I'm afraid you're wrong about it being misleading. Bethesda Vampires are still Vampires in their own right, and so they are unique. They are not like Earth Vampires and that is what I like about them. They still have Vampire qualities that would allow somebody to recognize them as one, and so they are Vampires. Not all that makes them Vampires has been removed. They still have the physical appearance of one, and the rest has merely been altered to suit the Elder Scrolls. I don't see why you keep bringing up Earth Vampires and Elder Scrolls Vampires when they're two different things, as I've said before and will say again. Earth and Nirn are clearly different. Why should Vampires be the same, boring thing on both?

Most Vampire NPC's I've encountered are not like Earth Vampires. The ones added by Dawnguard might sleep in coffins, but that's it. Vampires in the Elder Scrolls do have a weakness to sunlight and so they have no choice but to avoid the sun (though I see Vampires running around in broad daylight anyway). They don't need mortal blood to stay alive. They drink it because their blood thirst drives them to feed. If they could resist it, they would have no need for blood. The only instance of "blood" being used to supplement Vampiric powers is with the Bloodstone Chalice in Dawnguard, and even then it isn't mortal blood. It's filled from the Bloodspring in Redwater Den, with Vampire blood added to it and the remains of ancient Vampires once you've found them.

All I'm saying is that Bethesda has created another world, and they have a right to do Vampires the way they want to. The rules can be rewritten when you're working on an entirely different world, with it's own lore and history. Sun damage or no sun damage, requirements for blood or not, weak or powerful, the Elder Scrolls Vampires are still Vampires in their own right. Bethesda created them a certain way and I'd prefer if they stayed that way. Hence why I'm against most Vampire mods in existence.

I want Porphyric Hemophilia vampires in the next TES game because I think they are better than Sanguinare Vampiris vampires. Actually on second thought have both. That way everyone is happy. You could set up quests lines around the two different vampire clans and their rivalry. Then throw werewolves in the mix too. Have the player pick their side in the conflict.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

Having a rivalry between Vampire clans is nice, but Werewolves should stay out of the mix. We don't want the next Elder Scrolls game to turn into Twilight, do we?

I wonder if it would be possible to mod two different types of Vampires into Skyrim or Oblivion? Each disease has their own associated scripts (I think), since the changes and whatnot are scripted. If two separate diseases were created with different scripts for each one, then it might be possible to bring both Porphyric Hemophilia and Sanguinare Vampiris into the same game. I don't think it would be too far off, either. Surely Vampires travel from one place to another, so I suppose there would be a chance to contract different strains of Vampirism in the same province.

If you did that, then you could have different Vampires with different forms of sun damage, weaknesses and strengths. Different advantages and different disadvantages. In the end, each one would probably wind up being more suited for one play style than another. It might work.

I can only put it like this, lamae beolfag the blood matron cursed porphyric hemophilia... Molag bal gave sanguinare as a gift... Although both are curses of bal the blood matron curse came from vile darkness while sanguinare was a reward for loyalty... Now oblivion vamps bare the curse of lamae beolfag blood matron the most evil of the two curses and the way the curse came about wouldn't you think they would suffer more than the gift bal bestowed on skyrim vamps? Jes my opinion

Porphyric hemo is the offspring of a divine and a dadrae

Overall I actually kind of like the fact that Skyrim's 'campirism' really more seems like a blood junky who thinks they're a vampire rather than a real full on vampire. The way Harkon calls you out on it in dawnguard kind of cements the notion for me more than the underwhelming powers when compared to vampire clans of Cyrodiil and Vvardenfel.

Skyrim vampirism... it's all in your character's head.

"You contracted a disease, perhaps, but you are no true Vampire."
Or something like that.

Apparently the only real difference between contracting a disease and being a "true" Vampire is access to the Vampire Lord form. Why couldn't there have been more?

For those people who wanted sun damage (Oblivion/Morrowind style) back, that might have been the perfect place. Along with... Other things. Something to make more of a difference between Harkon's "true" Vampirism and the disease one.

Wow, hyperbole much? You'll notice in my first paragraph I state all the ways that I feel Elder Scrolls vampires are like earth vampires. What I'm against is removing all incentive or requirements to drink blood, and stating that I prefer when it's encouraged. Even in Oblivion and Skyrim (The two elder scrolls games to have an incentive for not drinking, in the form of the vampire stages), drinking blood is a pivotal part of a vampire. All NPC vampires (With the exception of Serana, at least when she was around me) drink blood regularly, and those with roles in society typically find covert ways to feed (Such as Sybille Stentor feeding on prisoners).

I don't particularly care about how it all falls in line with lore, or the differences between Elder Scrolls vampires and traditional "Earth vampires" (which are really part of a vast and contradictory mass of folklore and popular culture).

I DO think the Dawnguard vampires are a bit overpowered. I can't remember the last time I fed on a human. I don't even remember I AM a vampire most of the time, until I run into a couple of Lurker Vindicators or something and realize "Hey, I bet these guys would be easier to beat as a Vampire Lord!"

That's because it drives the vampires insane with hunger (amongst other things) if they don't feed... Something that doesn't affect the player character.

Sorry. I only just got out of bed when I wrote that.

I was going to say the same thing as CBR JGWRR. It's not so much a question whether or not they need the blood to exist. It's that they need the blood to maintain their sanity. If they try and ignore the thirst for long enough, it's going to eventually drive them insane. Some probably already are.

Though it can (and will) affect the player character if you decide to roleplay that. Vulom is insane for that reason.

Is it just me or does it seem like the game encourages you to drink more and more while only giving you benefits while starving yourself....

In Oblivion drinking would let you go out in the sun at stage one. So there was reason to do it. Also at stage 4 everyone hated you. Drinking made you more human. You were meant to decide if the benefits of better powers was worth starving yourself.

In Dawnguard it isn't so much of an issue.

I yhink it was removed because of fast traveling. The character loads a minute before the cell does. That's awhile to burn in the sunlight.

No I mean that the game goes and talks about staying strong by eating and attaining the ability to perform supernatural feats by staying strong through eating and that if you refrain from eating you get weaker....
