this... a "scholar's guild"
Am I the only one who misses bookstores too? It seems all of Skyrim is illiterate except the mages guild.

General stores sell books. That means people read books.

I am aware of general stores having a few books to sell.
Going from several dedicated bookstores in oblivion to a small selection in general stores seems to indicate a lack of regard for reading.

they have a few magazines for sale in most gas stations in Alabama.... that doesn't make them literate.

Magazines and books aren't the same thing. Also even the companions have books in their home. Lots of them. The nords like books too. Most homes are full of books, while in Oblivion most weren't or at least had a similar amount.

I can see your point, but my original post wasnt about the existence of books. It was about the lack of bookstores. "Theres alot of books" doesn't really address that.

not really a guild, but i always wondered why they removed the ''Nobles'' faction from Oblivion.

it sounded like so much fun. and you could do so much with it. it could be about rising through the ranks of a ''Noble'' family in order to help someone you met, or rescue someone, or save a town, or stop a bad governmental decision, or just because you want to become a big high and mighty nobleman.

i think it has the potential to be the most hilarious guild questline of all !

what do you guys think?

In oblivion i wanted to join the necromancers or some kind of dark/ forbidden magic guild. They could have any kind of quest line for thier evil deeds. Rewards could be a dragon priest follower or permanant deathlord, lesser dark mage followers, special magics and items. Thier whole plot could be raising the dragon priest.

You can gain thaneship in every hold. Plenty of political power.

Hmmmmm, how about an astronomy guild. Get paid to map out the night sky for people.

Or maybe a guide guild, show people the way through caves.

Lastly a cartography guild, make maps of caves or ruins & sell 'em to wannabe explorers & adventurers.

EDIT: Well maybe an archaeologist's guild too, start an archaeology company, & discover lost ruins/forts/treasure/ancient artefacts, & show em off in a museum or guild hall.

I think there should be some "good" faction for stealth based characters. Rather then stealing for money, you would use stealth, infliltration, and speechcraft to solve crimes and stop evil doers...for money

Sounds like being a detective. I had a similar idea.
bepeasej wrote:I would have a law enforcement type guild. You could build your own prison (like building houses in hearth fire) and being able to arrest criminals or people you don't like.
But without the stealth.

Yeah, I'd love something like that. It's annoying when sneaking always gets shoehorned into the "evil" category.

+1000000 points to you, good sir.

Personally, I think that, for all the hubbub about religion and Gods, both in Skyrim and elsewhere, the game is woefully lacking an order of holy warriors, so that's probably what I'd want. Something like the Knights of the Nine.

no, not really any at all . :(

i mean, apart from having a housecarl to boss around, and being able to get rid of guards once or twice for crimes, you dont have much power at all.

then again my idea wasnt solely (sorry, forgot how to spell it :P) for Skyrim. they could implement it in a future game.

and like i said, i wanted this because of the whole ''rising through the ranks'' part.

Thaneship doesn't hold much political weight in skyrim. The only real positions of power are steward and jarl. So if there were a "noble" faction, you should either be a steward or jarl.

A smithing guild would be interesting. Having all of skyrim' s best and brightest blacksmiths in a guild together. Of course being led by Eorlund Gray-Mane.

Thanes are very influential members of the jarl's court. Only gameplay restrictions tell you otherwise. The NPCs make it seem like a thane is the jarl's best friend. Which you kind of are.

A better COW. More lessons and training sessions. Destruction magic has you practicing with a partner who is training in the use of ward spells or against a magical target. Restoration magic has you heal a magical target. And so forth. There is more lectures and some expeditions to some ruins that have been cleared out by you before you joined. Depending on your skills as a mage, you may be sent with some generic COW mages and hired warriors to clear out a ruin for an expidition. Basically, more roleplaying options for mage. As well as spell creation and J'zargo being a bit of a prankstar. Sometimes, he will make your clothes disappear or become see through, including the loin cloths. It would feel like a magical place of learning. Instead of what we have at the moment. As archmage, you would have to deal with incidents on a regular basis, approve of all experiements and trips to ruins, or not. As well as making sure that the college is making gold in order to support itself.

Calcelmo sort of has a museum for archaeology, but technically for only dwemer and falmer artifacts. It would be interesting to have a museum dedicated to all archaeology and not just one or two races. Which brings up the question, where would this museum be located?

Where would any of these guilds be located if they existed?

I wondered the same thing. It would have been so much fun. Court intrigue and such. I'd like to see that implemented. The complexity of something like ASoIaF/Game of Thrones is probably too much to ask for, but I'd like to see court politics with ramifications. I'm always disappointed just a bit when my hero can't become as massive a Mary Sue as he or she should be. I want to become a jarl, dang it!

Now, personally, I've also been waiting for a Necromancer's Guild. The Dark Brotherhood is kind of like the flip side of the Companions or the Fighter's Guild but the Mage's Guild and CoW both lack a 'darker' alternative. I can imagine a necromancer's guild with ties to vampires as well as Daedra Lords. Maybe there would even be a rivalry with the College.

Skyrim has introduced the Forsworn as well. I keep wishing there was a faction for them. Same thing with the Bards College; it may have been there, but it wasn't fleshed out.
