Any good overhauls yet?
It's already been a while since Skyrim was released, so are there any good overhaul mods yet? I'm thinking on the level of OOO for Oblivion, or something. Don't get me wrong, I love Skyrim, but there are some things that I think need major changes. Perhaps I've just been playing Morrowind too much recently, but I really think it was much more... balanced? I'm not quite sure what it is about it, but I like better items being harder to come by, instead of common at high levels.

I can recommend Skyrim Redone.

Agree on that one, I can't imagine going back to not using SkyRe. I've seen maybe one other Skyrim overhaul mod, ever... they're certainly not common.ClockworkCadaver wrote:I can recommend Skyrim Redone.
edit: Worth noting that while it is an overhaul, it's not entirely comparable to OOO - it focuses on somewhat different things. SkyRe is more about expanding and rebalancing combat systems (and stuff related to combat) than anything else: overhauled physical combat, tons of new/changed spells, better sneak system, heavily changed perk trees, etc. Contrast this with OOO, which added a lot of stuff across the board and tweaked but did not radically alter combat.

I was going to start a similar thread since getting a bit bored with some aspects of scaling after my first 22 levels. I was looking at Skyrim Gems under "Gameplay Overhaul", and some of these mods in turn recommend some single aspect overhauls such as Balanced Magic and Community Uncapper that seem promising.
It's starting to look like a jungle and I'd like to ask for some short reviews, points of criticism especially, from those mods that you guys have actually tried. I was looking at SkyRe at first but I would really only be interested in the main module anyway and there are other contenders for perk tweaking and item/monster scaling. What say you?
I'm also looking at:
Character Creation Overhaul
Scaling Stopper
Requiem (overhaul with no scaling)
HBE - Hardcore and Balanced Experience
ACE (modular overhaul, especially ACE BYOG)
Skyrim Unleashed (different scaling)

Char Creation Overhaul should be compatible with most other things that don't directly alter races, I think.Skrofler wrote:I was going to start a similar thread since getting a bit bored with some aspects of scaling after my first 22 levels. Requiem... eeegh... this might sound really petty and it won't be an issue for everyone, but the writing in that mod (perk/spell descriptions, etc) really grates. It's like a thesaurus vomiting on your screen. That probably sounds unduly harsh if you haven't actually read many of them yourself, but trust me, it's not. There's also the fact that the perk descriptions don't even tell you what they do quantitatively; if there's a single non-pure-RP bone in your body, you probably want to know the effect a given perk has so you can figure out whether it's worth taking. Aside from that, the mod does have some cool ideas.
On a more substantial note, here are a few reasons I prefer SkyRe's main module over many other perk overhauls. Its changes are much more extensive, which is a good thing in my opinion (but, understandably, not everyone's) just because there was so much wrong with the original game's perk trees, IMO. There are simply more possible perks, so there's a greater emphasis on long-term specialization - Community Uncapper is semi-required, since perk skill requirements go up to 150. The mod also provides a handy reset function if you need it. And finally, most of its perks are just plain interesting. Examples: katana specialization (significant short damage boost after well-timed blocks), shout-boosting perks (an entire half-tree of 'em), perks to add alchemical explosives to arrows, smithing perks that give you unique bonuses for wearing different armor sets, etc.
That said, due to the aforementioned size of the new trees, it's not for everyone. It's also still a work in progress, so there are significant changes between updates, which might understandably annoy you. (That, and destruction magic gets way too powerful at high levels.)

That said, I too am interested in hearing more about other perk overhauls, because the only other one I've really looked at in any detail is Requiem.

Re: Any good overhauls yet?
I tried Requiem for a while and I didn't have a problem with the fact that perks don't tell you exactly what they do. If I want to use an axe and I feel I need to improve it it's easy to see what perk I'm going after. I really don't need to know if it's a 10% or 20% damage boost per point. But the word puke was exactly the issue. It was just tedious to read through and harder to get the big picture.
But what foiled Requiem for me is that it's all or nothing. I realised huge overhauls, much as some parts of them depend on others, need to be modular. There are dozens of great modifications in Requiem and a few really bad eggs (like gold weight). The bad eggs are bad enough for me to forgo all the good stuff.
The best overhaul is probably created by mixing and matching smaller specialized mods.
I'm going to look into a combination of ACE, Scaling Stopper and possibly Morrowloot for a while.
Also, I just found ERSO. This is going to take some time to go through.

For a great aid to the overhaul mods, you should get the Alternate start mods. Either "Alternate Start - Live Another Life" or "Random Alternate Start." Check the Nexus and go to categories; from there, click overhauls. You could spend hours there.
Shops are open 24/7. Half the time, you don't even have to pay!
