Re: Virus and other security problems + solutions
Sounds maybe like ransom ware. If you don't need any data on there and have a way to reinstall the operating system, just made a dban disk (http://www.dban.org/download) and wipe the drive. If you have a Windows 7 machine you should be able to make the disc by simply downloading the dban iso file and right clicking. In bold there should be an option to "Burn disc image" to create the CD. Then put the disc in the infected machine and reboot. You must be extremely careful at this point, where you will select which drives you want wiped. Use the space bar to select the drive with the infected OS and hit F10 to wipe everything from it. Make sure to read the instructions and be aware you won't be able to recover any of your data from that drive even with recovery software after with this method.
Then at least you can be sure that you have a clean drive to install the OS on.

It's a little old-schoolIamgoofball wrote:Ransomware? Now that's a new one.
Wikipedia - Ransomware (malware) wrote:The first known ransomware was the 1989 "PC Cyborg" trojan written by Joseph Popp, which triggered a payload claiming that the user's license to use a certain piece of software had expired, encrypted file names on the hard drive, and required the user to pay 189 United States dollars to "PC Cyborg Corporation" in order to unlock the system.

Re: Virus and other security problems + solutions
1. Do you have a repair disc? That could help you a step further.Frost Mage wrote:Well, Lo and behold, my problems have increased significantly. Now it won't even boot. It goes to the Windows logo (by the way I'm running Windows 7), then mentions something very briefly about some Anti Rootkit software, before going to a black screen and then restarting, creating a paradox. Does anyone know what I can do? It can't even boot into Safe Mode.
2. Not being able to even boot to Safe Mode means, you have no access to any Windows based programs > I sincerely suggest to clean the whole disk and make a new install.
3. You may in fact have a hardware problem, but I doubt it.
4. Whenever and however you get things running DO CHECK your Internet connections, and eliminate any that may be suspicious. Active in Youtube, being a man who may sometimes express himself in a blunt and not-so-appreciated way, I had two attacks that first stalled my PC, then broke down my Internet connection, and finally made my Windows dead = non-bootable. Maybe, just maybe, you have others than friends out there?
Best of luck.

Re: Virus and other security problems + solutions
Argh. Having an annoying problem. Whenever I click onto anything I get redirected to some browser called mytoolsapp.info. Just tried opening this forum. Nope. Straight away redirected. (writing this from my iPhone)
I can't open anything without getting redirected.
I found a program on my computer called mytools. My mum probably downloaded it by accident. I uninstalled it but it didn't help. Using Firefox by the way.
I haven't found anything online about it. And my virus program didn't find anything.

Re: Virus and other security problems + solutions
The easiest way to check it might be by http://www.malwarebytes.org/
It's a very thorough and reliable all-around tool. Mytools seems to be a rather reliable one, it shouldn't give direct problems, but all sites may have connections.
You could try a restoration point, Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System\System Protection\System Restore. where you can pick an earlier point for the system to be restored to.

Re: Virus and other security problems + solutions
Problems like this can be annoying. I bought Avast Internet Security a year ago, and recently bought two years more of it. Works like a dream. Considering how much people spend on beer, security software are not that expensive, at least not if you think about the certainty you get. The question is, what do you invest in?

Don't know where to put this question, so stuck it here...
Anyone finding that UESP is getting 'stuck' randomly? Having to close down the internet window and go on again (no viruses reported from Norton).

Re: Virus and other security problems + solutions
To stuck randomly is actually a normal phenomenon, no cause to panic. It may well be an issue with your Internet connection. You could do well with a cleanup, through CCleaner or Advance System Cleaner, or eq. It's debated if Registry should be cleaned, but I recommend it.
If you have normal HDDs, defrag it / them. SSDs don't benefit from defrag, although they don't suffer, either.
Norton is known to be problematic, but I'm not here to blame them. You could try disabling it; If you have Windows 7 or later with updates, you're safe for several hours. Just remember to restart it > it should do so automatically at reboot. A fact: be sure not to have more than one security program running - they will collide. Check that you don't have MSE running, or other inbound Windows security.
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools > Event Viewer gives you info of what has happened. If you can't get it running, send what it's telling, by screen captures or otherwise.
Wish You the very best.
