Bull [&@%!].

The Reach combined with the Northern Lights puts any scenery in Cyrodiil to shame.

Now the Shivering Isles at night....

honestly that diorama of the cosmos just plastered over the sky is one of the most beautiful things a video game ever produced.

I think the heavens are stunning, any starry night or picture of space simply floors me.

Do I miss technicolor candyland when I can have the stern, rugged beauty of northern lands? Heck, no!

Ja, wie mag die insel heißen, von Vivec bis Dagon Fel?

You know, out of all the Elder Scrolls games, I think Cheydinhal is, by far, the most beautiful town. There is something about that town that really puts you in awe.

Nah white run, despite being the most simple of the cities is by far the most elegant and awesome city. Just stop moving your character and angle the camera to look up a bit so you get some sky line and you'll see what I mean. Smoke just rising through the air over the water and hill.

I really loved Cheydinhal, too! There is something about that town that was just so picturesque and charming. I spent a lot of time in that town in Oblivion, a great deal of it just walking around. It really was a fantastic city.

I did also like Anvil a great deal.

Of course, that's not to say I haven't been utterly charmed by the Skyrim or Morrowind scenery, either. I've been charmed by the scenery in every game. But there really was something about Oblivion's portrayal of Cyrodiil that I just found very nice and soothing, and even miss.

Turn your a/c way up (or open the windows if its cold). Stand in the veldt of Whiterunhold and watch the sun rise.

The leaves are all red and gold here in NC...I looked into the hills and saw Riften around me.

i want to see my breath when I play Skyrim.

There are certain nuances to the design of the Skyrim environments that I felt Oblivion didn't have. Though the differing environments were rendered beautifully there was never a point in Oblivion where I knew a tree. I "know" trees and rocks in Skyrim, just like I "knew" them in Morrowind (well, not that many trees). I know where I am b/c of that tree. That trees position looks different. That rock on that hill looks different. Even if they weren't...it just seemed like every inch was unique and I never felt that with Oblivion. Beautiful, yes...breathtaking, yet...but similar everywhere.

First of all Anvil was the best city ever made in Tamriel, and oblivion was amazing I remember my first time playing it, everything so colorful the exact opposite of where I live, and then Skyrim if I wanted to see a mountain I'd go outside, and if I wanted to have everything dark I'd go outside.I remember getting a mod for oblivion that allowed you to go beyond the borders, so I went into skyrim and explored, it was all forest yet with the same oblivion art it looked amazing.

I don't know, i never enjoyed oblivion's art, that generic fantasy game design is just unappealing for me, i prefer Morrowind or Skyrim on that case.
I'm actually thankful to have left that art style.

The biggest problem with Skyrim is that Bethesda just lifted parts wholesale from Lord of the Rings. Oblivion was a generic fantasy RPG world. Both are fine and could have used a little bit more creativity. I never miss Cyrodiil because I can always play Oblivion.

Oblivion was generic, yes, but it was just as heavily influenced by LOTR as Skyrim was. Perhaps more so.

Also, go and watch the classic movie Excalibur and play Oblivion. You'll note many, many things from Exalibur in that game. Compare Merlin to the Mage pre-selected class, or the knights' armor to the Steel Armor, etc. The LOTR "Men of Gondor" aesthetic is there in spades, especially in the concept art and some of the civilian clothing and steel weapons.

The LOTR influence on Skyrim is more based on Rohan, especially Whiterun which strongly resembles Edoras. I'd say Skyrim has just as much influence from generic Viking and Barbarian fantasy too, though. There's a lot of Conan the Barbarian and Beastmaster in Skyrim, to name a couple.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

I haven't played as much of Oblivion as I have of Skyrim, but so far, I have really have enjoyed the lush, verdant, and diverse landscapes of Cyrodiil. The Jungle/Marsh feel of some of the areas was a personal favorite of mine, and it felt like a nice contrast to the tundras and snowy mountains of Skyrim.
However, Skyrim has it's fair share of variety as well, some of my personal favorites being the tundras of the Whiterun hold, the frozen swamps near Morthal, and especially the lush autumn forests and shrubbery of The Rift. The falling leaves, wild gourd patches, and even the beehives all added to the immersion and feel of the hold, along with fitting into it's overall theme.

Either way, they both have great scenery in their own ways.

Skyrim was reasonably varied, but i just dont enjoy the Grey colouring on everything.

where i live, everything is reasonably colourful, and i love it when things are Colourful

and the cities of Cyrodiil were... sooo pretty ...

The thing I miss the most from Oblivion is the music. The music was absolutely beautiful in it. And I have to admit that the scenery was really nice, and I loved simply exploring the countryside. I didn't even fast travel when I escorted Jauffre and Martin; I walked the whole way. It was really nice!

It's hard to miss. I've seen it every night this week.

I've spent most of my time so far in the north, Cheydinhal, Bruma, Chorrol. I've been bothered by the in-game descriptions touting Cheydinhal as a heavily Dunmer-influenced city, when I thought it looked more like Caldera, which was the most Imperial-influenced city in Morrowind. I was hoping to find mushroom towers and bars built into crab shells, and instead see a very pretty yet very not-Dunmer-looking town full of mansions and a temple that looks exactly like every other temple in the province, lacking even the subtlest hint of Velothi architecture.

The landscape is very lush for a video game world. I can see that they tried very hard to capture a true wilderness appearance. But as someone who has spent a great deal of time in the foothills of the Alleghenies (you know, a for real outside place), I'm not so easily fooled. In particular, the movements of the deer "clusters" really backed me out of the immersion. They have the animation and flight AI of a creature designed by someone trying to mimic something they've only ever seen out of a car window at 60 miles per hour. Granted, they're atmospheric and not at all the focus of the adventure, but it's because I've had a great deal of exposure to the reality that I'm bugged by it. It's like how in many movies when someone travels through an HVAC duct system, or sets off an entire sprinkler system by holding a lighter up to one head, or does something totally unrealistic with a building's electrical system. Or sets off an explosion in an ice pack to destroy a secret installation on the ocean floor.

In any event, I am thoroughly enjoying my first run of Oblivion, and look forward to eventually experiencing Skyrim fully. I have a feeling I'll be compelled to revisit Morrowind every once in a while, though, just for the change in scenary.

Oblivion is a fantastic game. It has oodles of charm.. that charm gets old, however.

Cyrodiil is monumentally boring compared to Skyrim and Vvardenfell. It's beautiful.. but you've got the gold coast, forest, forest with some red trees, a bit of snowy forests, very round mountains etc. I mean, I love it.. but it wears thin. There really is not much in the way of exploring in Oblivion.

So no, I don't miss the scenery of Oblivion in TES series. When I do miss it, I play Oblivion.

i was walking about near Bruma the other day, then today i was travelling near Bravil, then i went to Leyawinn

and the way the environment changed entirely, i just Loved it !
from the cold, Grey Grassed, snowy Jeralls. to the crazy Swampland down south, it was just too good.

honestly, i dont see much Variety in Skyrim, its too grey. they focused too much on the ... uh.... ''Gritty'' way of things, and i just dont like it. (i hate the word Gritty, its overused all the time. these days , EVERYTHING is gritty. )

i just cant see why people hate Cyrodiil so much, it something i will never ever Understand. :|

For me, Cyrodiil was beautiful...the first few minutes of exploring...after that I stopped exploring and fast traveled everywhere I went

In Skyrim (and Morrowind) the land's appeal isn't just its realism or foreboding graphics, but its design; you get to know a certain winding road and all its little details rather than passing the same tree for miles with only a handful of unremarkable landmarks to guide you without your map. I love exploring in Skyrim, Oblivion just doesn't spark that in me.

But certainly there will be nothing quite like that first picturesque view of Vilverin across Lake Rumare after having climbed out of the darkness of the Imperial City sewers for the first time...

I always Fast Travel on every game when its possible, im not too annoyed about that

i like exploring, dont misunderstand. but i just like using it, speeds things along nicely. and i can stop using it if i ever just want to wander :P
in skyrim, while the Dungeons were mostly good, i just dont think the Landscape was good

its backwards with Oblivion, the Dungeons got quite Repetative, but the Landscape was Fantastic :P

PS: i dont get to know roads, i dont even use them

I miss.... the seemingly extensive sewer systems. I'm sure they're not anywhere as extensive as I remember but it was rather exciting finding out I could run through the sewers to reach other houses in the imperial city. Would love to see more underground networks in games sometimes, not a bunch of caverns/ruins/etc but sometimes interconnected networks sort of like the subway system in <insert city>. Black reach was nice except for the fact that it treated the area like it was outside without access to a detailed map.

I did find it ironic that they put so much more into the graphics in Skyrim, then gave us this very mundane black-and-white landscape. Lower Skyrim could stand to be prettier.
