What is the difference between burned and burnt? Or leapt and leaped?
And what is the name of a sentence that you can do this: "An ice sculpture." And then you can have: "A nice sculpture."

The difference is the tense. They're either past or present.POMC S117 wrote:What is the difference between burned and burnt? Or leapt and leaped?

Though remember to use correct grammar kids or:
Micheal helped Uncle Jack off a horse.
Becomes:
micheal helped uncle jack off a horse

Re: Words!
Ahh, thanks... Have you got an answer to my other question. Has it even got a name?

No, they have the same amount of letters, look: "AN ice sculpture." Becomes: "A Nice sculpture."
It probably doesn't have a name though. Thanks again Spiney.

Ice and nice may sound similiar, but they are not homonyms or heterographs homographs, so I have no idea what they could be called.

You might want to think of a better example than, "Help uncle jack off a horse."

Re: Words!
Ahem.
Out of curiosity, what is your native language, POMC?
This comes from the origins of the past tense and American English as it derived from other dialects of English, and so it is actually dialectal. The standard for American English is to use a the /-ed/ suffix to imply past tense, but several other dialects use the more archaic form, which is to use the /-t/ suffix. In this case these words might be considered irregular verbs. The same is true for spill, dream, and learn.POMC S117 wrote:What is the difference between burned and burnt? Or leapt and leaped?
I wasn't aware that sort of word play had a name - it's merely a phonological process that happens with English. And what is the name of a sentence that you can do this: "An ice sculpture." And then you can have: "A nice sculpture."

Re: Words!
Two different words with differing spelling structure but identical pronunciation are call homophones, correct? This could be termed as a homophonic something-or-other.POMC S117 wrote:...And what is the name of a sentence that you can do this: "An ice sculpture." And then you can have: "A nice sculpture."
Dig this:

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Technically yes, but it was the spambot who necroposted. Dark Spark ignored it's post, and made a post that might just enliven the thread again.Mars wrote:Uh...technically there's still necroposting going on here, right?

Speaking of homophones, how the heck do these sound the same: no, know? Through, threw? Rough, ruff?
And how many letters can be silent?

Re: Words!
My favourite palindrome is "Dammit I'm Mad" It just makes me smile.
I hated English back in Primary school - Silent letters, phonetics and all that - spelling was quite literally the bane of my life. I for one, doubt it's has gotten any easier, but even so, I fail to see how that is an excuse for the insult to intelligence that is text typing and unnecessary acronyms. I'm no linguistics expert and I'm not exactly a busy man, but I cannot fathom how it saves time.

Re: Words!
That's a mix of where the words came from and also the fact that English spelling is awful because we had a major phonetic shift that didn't correspond with the time we decided on spellings of words. Silly people.Musicman247 wrote:Speaking of homophones, how the heck do these sound the same: no, know? Through, threw? Rough, ruff?
Turkish actually has one silent letter - the ğ, which is called the "yumuşak ge," or the "soft g." It's used to lengthen vowels or break up vowel clusters, but itself has no sound! And how many letters can be silent?

Re: Words!
Oh God. This old thread.
Yeah. There are some pretty weird spellings and pronunciations in English.
Speaking of palindromes, Malayalam is a palindrome.
I've always wondered how a word like *harjaz could possibly be derived from *koro-s. I don't see any similarity. They're made up of different letters.

Re: Words!
As a person who has an English Language A-Level, english semantic and spelling shifts drive me beyond insane.
Especially when you find the etymology of a word and it turns out to be completely different to the actual word. You wonder how the hell they changed their meaning so much. Its like the word 'gay'. It used to mean happy..now it means homosexual. Why?
