Wait, I'm a little confused. Is this the same AoEII we're talking about? I've never heard turns before

I was referring to AoE the age of kings. Which seems to want to burn my holdings when I'm still researching the freakin loom and building my first mine.

Oh yeah, we're talking about the same game here, phew.
Usually my strategy is to knight rush. Castle quickly, build stables, then terrorize my opponent with knights. Absolute noobs (people actually worse than me, which isn't possible) don't wall, and I have an easy time.

I'm not really into heavy cav that much. I'm an infantry man and normally I wear off my enemies through wars of attrition and holding key points on the map with extremely defensible units. I really only use heavy cavalry when I'm outnumbered and outgunned, or when I need to make a precision attack on a ranged unit. Heavy cav is like my special forces, or advance forces to weaken enemy resistance when I'm invading.

I see. So you like to build up a massive army, comprised of champions and halbs, and then attack?

pretty much, I also have men-at-arms for raids, skirmishers to protect territory to I already control, and longswordsmen as regular army units. I normally have something around 2 longswordsmen: 1 champion. Halbs is always something I have in bulk. Because they're really good at holding strategic points for long periods of time.

Age of empires 2? You have to love the Teutons, those teutonic knights are unstopable!

Yep. They could probably defeat the Byzantines even with their defensive bonuses, but the drawback is that they are a little slow.

I eat Teutonic knights for breakfast. They can't hold up against the combined attack and trample damage of fully upgraded Cataphracts. Not even a whole army of siege onagers can stand up against that.

I've never gotten the hang of using siege equipment tbh.

I never liked Onagers, if you don't mico-manage them well they will easily kill you own men, really annoying!!

Of course siege onagers can't stand up to them. The cataphracts just charge at them.
Paladins still own Cataphracts with enough of them and upgrades, though.

I always like cavaliers better, you afford more them, and with the right research you could probably make them as strong as paladins.

You can, and the cavalier barely beats the Cataphract one-on-one, but they get beaten in mass battles because of trample

I was on Gameranger and when I saw all those matches that had "Europe 1000 pop" or something like that, I was really confused. I thought they were faking it.

Woooah! That music is so nostalgic! Sounds great even after all these years. My fav set-ups in single player: monks/paladins/trebuchets or replace monks/paladins with longbowmen or cho-ku-nu.

I wanted to play AoE again but the graphics looked all funny on Win7. Now here's my chance again!

Was the water and land all pink and purple and stuff? Yeah, that happens to many people, it seems.

I usually just go for the early knight rush and castle early, but sometimes that may change. I seem to never remember to wall, though.

That happens to me, on my laptop (Windows 7), but there is a fix for it. A kind of strange one, but it works nonetheless.

Before loading up the game, right click on your desktop, and open either the "Personalise" or "Screen Resolution" window. I can't remember which one, but once that is open, run your game and the colours will be normal.

So:
Open Personalise/Screen Resolution.
Run AoE II.
No retarded colours.

Yeah I know.

I didn't believe it at first either, but it works.

I miss AoE :( I lost my discs for it when I moved last... I might go on a hunt for them again later today.
