Current Musical Project/Goals
Title sort of speaks for itself. This topic is to discuss your current projects and goals you are working towards. Doesn't matter what instrument, share to your heart's content!
I see no reason why I shouldn't start it off. I started practicing, The Wind Cries Mary, earlier this week. It's been smooth running so far learning it, I see my one issue being, when the whole thing is learned; is execution. I have to make some intricate chords on the fly, so I'll need to practice making them so I can form them quickly.
I think what I've enjoyed the most when it's come to learning this song, is the necessity to use my pinky and thumb. Most songs I haven't had to use my pinky on, cause I can stretch my fingers quite a bit, and fewer have made me utilize my thumb. So it was refreshing for a change! Oh, and the solo is just fun to play!
How about the rest of you?

Re: Current Musical Projects/Goals
I'm learning how to play 'U.N. Owen Was Her' from Touhou on my Trombone. I need a song to play in front of non-musical people so that it looks like I know what I'm doing.
Wish me luck. I'm going to need it. ._.
Also I'm learning how to play my new bass. Guys, bass is hard.

As for the bass, I knew the moment I saw someone play a bass guitar; that it was a whole different monster from a regular guitar. When you learn it though, it'll be great!

Oh, this was my experience when I first someone play bass when I was starting out on the guitar. Yeah, I would've gotten a bass and thought, hey, I'm gonna play this sucker like my guitar...If we have any bassists reading this, I'm sure they are already laughing.Unionhack wrote:I don't actually know normal guitar. xD The only instruments I can play are the Trombone and Baritone.

I have honor band tryouts tomorrow. I have issues with choking in the audition room, but I'm going to try real hard tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I realized a couple things when I had my recital in December of last year. Make sure you play has been practiced a lot, take a deep breath, and focus on what you are doing. First song may not be so hot, but the songs after will come easier.Unionhack wrote:I have honor band tryouts tomorrow. You'll do fine, deep breath, relax, and focus!

So alongside Wind Cries Mary, I decided to learn Dam That River by Alice in chains with it...I don't foresee this being an issue whatsoever. Once I learn the verse and chorus, I have learned the whole song, solo aside.
When I start playing in places during our tourist events here, people will recognize this song instantly...Well, if they have taste in music,.

Re: Current Musical Projects/Goals
Actually you could adapt a guitar play-style to bass, some famous bass player did ( Lemmy of Motorhead for one, hence is very distinct sound). But yeah bass is something different, I remember the guitar player of my very first band picking up my bass during a break and playing it with his thumb, he got a blister the size of a cherry in about 4 minutesFiar wrote:Oh, this was my experience when I first someone play bass when I was starting out on the guitar. Currently I am working on Bach Cello suite N 1-Prelude, it's pure torture for the left hand due to transfer from cello to bass, but it's a great piece, and it's really good to work the technicality and the muscles of the left hand.

I never plan what to learn, as I mostly learn new things by ear, but lately I've been learning three songs by a band called Incredible Hog and one by another band called Atomic Rooster.

When I learn something, it's usually cause it interests me and/or I can learn something from it and apply it to my tinkering sessions. So yeah, mine are planned for this reason. Though every song I learn, I genuinely enjoy. = )the Savage Hippie wrote:I never plan what to learn, as I mostly learn new things by ear, but lately I've been learning three songs by a band called Incredible Hog and one by another band called Atomic Rooster.
As for playing by ear, I am starting to hear the notes and be like, "Oh, that's here". It's not perfect, for now I just play to the song, and when it's good, I transition it to the drum machine which I've been making heavy use of.

Anyway, I sorta took on a third project, I inadvertently learned Burning Bright yesterday, and have been playing it to some live versions that I like. And along with this, I kind of figured out the lead parts by simply listening. Wasn't hard, but I'm proud that my ears work!

Re: Current Musical Projects/Goals
I picked my crummy old acoustic guitar up recently, and immediately realised it's not going to be as easy to just pick up and play as I thought...
The last time I actually played guitar (ie, not just mucking around) was about 4 years ago, and since that time I broke 3 fingers on my left hand, which healed crooked..
Soooo, it turns out that bar chords are now almost impossible to play, and I can't fit my ring and middle fingers in the same fret..
[&@%!]. (One of the only songs I can remember is Polly by Nirvana, but for the life of me I can't play that damn A#!! At least I think it's A#. I was always a bit bad at remembering which chords are which.)

Ouch, how did that happen with the fingers? And is there a way to make them heal right?Believe wrote:I picked my crummy old acoustic guitar up recently, and immediately realised it's not going to be as easy to just pick up and play as I thought...

Cricket injury, Fiar.
And nah, unless I re-break them so that they need surgery, I'm stuck with 3 crooked fingers.
I was trying last night to try and come up/find some alternatives, but I couldn't...
Oh well. I guess I'll keep trying. Or maybe I just have to learn a different instrument.

Currently learning the guitar and vocals for every song on Nirvana's Unplugged In New York album. I can do About A girl, Come As You Are, Pennyroyal Tea, Polly, Something In The Way, Plateau, Oh Me, Lake Of Fire, and Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Next I'll probably learn The Man Who Sold The World and All Apologies. Both are incredible songs. I have to work on my voice though. I can hit the notes, and the timing doesn't worry me. I dunno what the word is for what I need to work on, but at the moment I just sound bad.

Ahhh, Lake of Fire, Nirvana did an awesome cover of that song. I learned it a while ago myself, but forgot it since. This is before I made sure to keep my repertoire fresh in my mind.
So which one of those would you say is your favorite? And which one was your favorite to learn. I often found when it came to songs on a CD, my favorite song and favorite song to play would be different 50% of the time.

Re: Current Musical Projects/Goals
All three of the Meat Puppets ones are really fun. I'm a big fan of Kurt Kirkwood's guitar playing. I've learned a fair few Meat Puppets songs too. Back on Unplugged... I have a feeling that The Man Who Sold The World will be quite fun. The guitar sounds pretty cool. Pennyroyal Tea is also quite fun. It's good because it's nothing but guitar and vocals, so it sounds the most complete when I play it on my own.

Re: Current Musical Projects/Goals
I'm currently in the works of something huge for myself. By huge I mean its been a dream of mine for a long time and I'm finally closing in on it. I want to improve my skills on the harmonium and learn how to play the tapas, which is an Indian drum. I want to be part of a kirtan wallah (kirtan band), playing devotional chants. I have several options but I've decided to go to a kirtan camp to learn more. Its all in the works, but its very exciting getting ideas and seeing doors open for this possibility. I know quite a few chants already I can pick up with the harmonium. I really want to buy one of my own but they are hundreds of dollars.
