Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I missed Spell Creation.
i recently started playing Oblivion again, and it was great to have it back.
the spells in skyrim were crap. i tried to play as a pure mage as did my brother, and neither of us could keep going because spells never improved enough, and the ones that did decent damage cost too much Magicka.
if i had had Spell Creation, i could have perhaps balanced it out a little and made some decent spells.
i also missed the great number of Spell Effects that were chopped out of skyrim (for some reason ?) like Reflect and Absorb Spells. and Waterwalking. and Fortify.
so really, i just want it to go back to the way it was. maybe they can keep the ''Weilding Spells'' system, just as long as they bring back the old effects and spells creation.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I don't quite understand what people mean exactly when they say that:
)
I've played through the game as a mage, and I admit that the lower level spells get useless, quite quickly, but I never thought "This spell is great, but it costs too much". I don't know how anyone else plays their mages of course, but I almost never ran out of Magicka, no matter what I was fighting. I rememebr killing 2 dragons, 2 giants, and 2 mammoths in 1 battle, without going under half-magicka...
Now, in saying all that, I should probably mention that my Mage, was a Mage-Mage.
As in, every single level up went on Magicka, all his clothes were enchanted with Magicka Regen/Fortify Magicka... So maybe thats all you need?

Every level up went to Magicka?
nah, i played with levelling up all three, but levelling Magicka most of the time,i dont want to be squished in one hit just in-case
see thats the problem though, the spells werent even ''Great'' i only ever found decent to crap spells, never anything great. when i played on master at low level, Firebolt was useless after a short while, and Incinerate felt like it did the same amount of damage

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
Yes. My mages was about level 35 when I got bored of destroying anything I wanted whenever I felt like it. The 100 health was only a pain if I got ambushed. But that's what Buffs are for.philfredobob wrote:Every level up went to Magicka?
IMO playing a mage was waaay to figgin' easy. As I said, I had 100 health, 0 AR, and could kill anything I wanted with minimal effort.
I would have enjoyed having a few more spells to play with, but I never found that I had to use anything higher than Firebolt, except for Unique enemies. (Dragon Priests mainly. In which case the Rune spells, or Expert level spells were easily powerful enough.)
I guess it just comes down to how each person plays the game. But for the most part, I was happy with Skyrims magic system. As I said earlier in the thread, a cross between Skyrim and Oblivion would be almost perfect in my eyes.

The spells do enough damage for me, but as someone who plays pure mages most of the time they are not flashy enough to keep me interested. The reason I liked spell creation was ecause you could mix up effects if you wanted.

And get extremely creative with SC, don't forget that. Most of my original entries in the Useful Spell Ob section are still there, and that type of creativity was just the tip of the iceberg with what you could do with spell creation. Maormer serpent magic? Check, Heart Attack spells? Check, Traps and "runes?" Check. Now this persons fire spell is the exact same as that persons. This characters lightning is the same as that other ones, etc. Spell Creation was the deepest and most customizable of all of the crafting mechanics the ES has ever had. Removing it is like removing Enchanting or Alchemy, but worse.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I'm sure someone will make customizable spells in a mod one day. Incinerate did feel exactly like firebolt. The only way playing as a mage ever worked for me is when I could stun-lock enemies. Even then I ran out of magic too quickly, and magicka regenerates over 100% slower with enemies around (which was retarded, the same with stamina). It seemed like an insult getting hit in the face with a mace while magicka regenerated slower than a snail walks. Robes that actually help were far too expensive(more expensive than a house? Seriously?)
"Just remember," laughed the Emperor. "You Akaviri have a lot of showy moves, but if just one of our strikes comes through, it's all over for you."

I've been waiting since 11/11/11 for this, I don't think anyone can or will create a SC mod. Not sure if it is even possible with the way they made magic in Sky.Noah_The_Warlock wrote:I'm sure someone will make customizable spells in a mod one day.

Thankfully the creation kit offers some freakishly huge possibilities,
Unfortunately, not everyone can use the creation kit.
Maybe someone will come along and add some new, interesting spells in a huge mod, in lieu of spell creation.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I haven't played other ES games but I do like the way the magic system in Skyrim has been done. One thing is I would have liked seeing was for the skills to take a bit longer to max. Magic is a skill that takes some time to hone, so that would have seemed a bit more realistic to me. I can't say whether spell creation would have been good or not since I haven't experienced that. I do think that altering existing spells would have been nice. Its annoying how some opponents will live through a series of ice storm spells where my characters die immediately even with magic resistance etc. I also think opponents should be able to use illusion against pc. I do think that Skyrim mages are some of the most powerful characters in the game.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
Skyrim was awful in many ways, and magic was certainly one that annoyed me a lot.
Why would they remove spells that were in previous games when they make a new one? I seriously have so much trouble understanding this. Each game they make they've just simply removed features that have been previously appreciated. This applies to many game series, not just TES but it's [&@%!] frustrating.
