Morrowind hard to get into?

Ok I've played lots of games, but I am finding Morrowind a little hard to get into. Maybe it is because I don't have hours on end to devote to it. I am lucky if I get to play an hour at a time. (God I miss college =P)

I am finding leveling up takes more time. Travel is way too slow, and the enemies are a little difficult. (I really hate the fact that magica is not regenerating.) Even in battle it takes forever to cast a spell. I still cannot make my own potions because they always fail.

Oh and I still need to drop some stuff that may be useful later on, but don't know what is *safe* or not.

Please tell me this is all just because I am a newbie. Please tell me the game will get better.

morrowind slow

I don´t know if you are at x-box or pc but if you think it´s slow...
You could from the beginning do it fighter-style,go into caves and tombs,
remember health potions(you get some for free at the fighters guilds equippment chests, and it´s adviced that you get a silver weapon for thombs,
save often to :-)

Indeed. The first days I played this game my thought was OMG, this game is so strange, give me Neverwinter Nights or another game. But once you get to learn the game, the world and your character grows stronger, the game will be much better!
Now after playing it for 4 years, Morrowind is without doubt my favorite game ever!

if leveling is taking too long make sure you are practicing (i.e. using) your major and minor skills. (they're what make you go up)

find containers or claim an empty cave/house for your own and store things there. if you sell things to merchants you can always buy it off them again later, they keep it.

travelling is slow? well your speed will gather with time, until then - enjoy the countryside ;) or use the slit striders/mages guild as much as poss.

A note: The OP has played Oblivion. Keep in mind the differences between OB & MW.

Like buying houses in OB, and not in MW. Evicting occupants in MW and having safe storage, but not in OB.

Having played MW for two years before playing OB, I understand the differences. I did not like OB at first, but eventually got into it. For those who have played MW, and don't like OB, it is much worse to play OB and go back to MW. ...I think that it would be even worse to have played OB, and then try to play MW for the first time.

Agree that it is probably harder to go from OB to MW than other way around.
I play both but most MW.
Anyhow I got the impression that it was more the pace than other things that was the issue here, and if so it is probably best to choose some skills you like
in chargen and use them, often.Get action fast then=more like OB :-)

The biggest hurdle early on are probably fatigue-, and magicka-regeneration
and not able to controll blocking anyhow compared.

I think that Morrowind is overall a better game than Oblivion, but Oblivion is definitely better balance.

In Morrowind you start out pretty useless, and can't kill a damn rat with swinging at it with a battleaxe 20 times, but at least your character in Oblivion can at least swing a sword and kill something a lot easier when you start out.

It might be a good idea to find some of the known methods to earn money fast and train your important skills and level up a bit. After you're at a reasonable level, and have picked up some mark/recall and intervention spells along with some good armor and weapons, the game becomes much more fun to play, and you can get geared up and wander into the wilderness to explore. Even though Morrowind is smaller than Cyrodiil, there seems to be a wider and more interesting variety of terrains, vegetation and towns and cities. All of the land and cities in Oblivion just looks like it came out of medieval or ancient Europe.

Anyway, have fun! The game's not for everyone, but if you enjoyed Oblivion, you should find yourself getting into it after a while.

get a magicka regen mod if you are on PC...

you will fail at battles if you are a mage without it!

and it makes me happier, even if it is slow!

My "reply" was without mods depending on xbox-users but yes, magicka regen are a must on pc,then I got a birtsigh.mod to so I usually have 25 or 50 in magicka regeneration anyhow :-D

About leveling fast,long/short-blade and armorskills goes fairly quick and from seyda neen there is at least 3 banditcaves to balmora over pelagiad, two over odai plateau, finish thoose and you are up some levels when you get to balmora, and arille in seyda neen sells almsivi intervention scrolls so buy some after adamastrus(the first bandit-cave) :-)

Thanks for all the help guys! So far I like the game, I was expecting a lot worse. I almost jumped the first time it stormed because it sounded so real.

Don't worry I will not give up this game...I just hope I finish my first character before my daughter graduates HS (she's a month shy of 7) =P

How do you level up Alchemy besides training? I want my potions to at least work.

how god potions you make. Also does your intelligence but that is another story :-)

alchemy is easy to increase and to abuse... i did both (the abuse and the normal use). i believe both are OK. i mean without abuse there is plenty of potions. just join the fighters and mage guild to get some free health restore and magicka restore potions. they are good enough for start and even later on.

otherwise there will be plenty of potions lying arround or they are also available in stores.

the funny thing in morrowind if that even if the effect in achemy is non visible it is still there (unlike in Oblivion). so oyu might see the question marks but it's there. and can be used to make a potion.

what makes a good potion - you can see on Wiki's alchemy page.

For alchemy it's just about finding a TON of ingredients and continuously trying and trying and trying and trying and trying... and trying. That's the only way to get your skill up without going to a trainer.

The easiest way is to find two ingredients with like-effects (as in they both have the same effect so they can make a potion) at an alchemy shop with a stock of 5-10 each. Then buy them and sell them back (if it has over 5 in stock naturally, they'll keep stacking every time you sell them back, so if you stack them to 100, then every time you buy, the shop will restock to 100 on its own). Once you can buy a decent number of ingredients for each... go at it right there to your heart's content. It's the only non-time consuming way to increase your skill without seeing a trainer. It also helps to have a full set of equipment to work with, and quality helps a lot too (it's not like Oblivion where the alchemy equipment is leveled, you can find master and grandmaster quality stuff in shops, and there's a master set in the Caldera Mage's Guild in a room where you can steal it quite easily).

I think it's better to first raise your alchemy skill to level 30-40 with a trainer before starting to make potions. Otherwise you'll waste a lot of ingredients.

Correct to some degree, but at balmoras mages guild, ajira restocks cheap ingridients like hound meat, crab meat, kwama eggs and buy something like
50 each and making potions are a cheap way to level..
Also as a new player you get a free retort from another blade, that altmer dude in balmora....

and you can always use a mod like that below helps

If you get Nalcarya of White Haven's disposition up to about 80 and get some journeyman equipment, you should start making a profit from alchemy level 15 or so.

You can go to the Caldera Mages Guild and there's a full set of master's alchemy equipment at the top of a set of stares with no-one around that you can steal and no-one will notice.

Just be aware that in that top room all the items are owned, so if you take it it will get confiscated if you ever get arrested, and so will any other item with the same id no matter where you got it from.

So, if you take one of the ingredients, say green lichin, then even if you collect some from the wild it will still be listed as stolen.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. Still, it's a quick and easy way to get master's alchemic equipment and you can just stash them in Caius's house so you can brew potions whenever you're in Balmora and not worry about having them taken away from you.

I've noticed a similar issue when you Galbedir's soul gems from her desk. Even if you sell or dump them all, you can't use her enchanting service without getting into trouble because she seems to think that all soul gems you have are stolen from her.

So will potions made from such device be considered stolen too?

And level 15...OMG I have a long way to go.

The potions are made by you and will be marked as yours, unless you place them inside a container that is owned by an NPC.
I suspect that with master's equipment you'll only need 10 or so points.

I'm pretty sure the person that said level 15 was talking about the skill level, not your character level, in case that's what you thought. :P

Rohugh or other get to arrest me if this is wrong but...
I think Nalcarya at disposition at 100 buys at full value with 3k and restocking
:-D
