There's no one specific you have to kill, you can just run past them all and grab the stone (though you'll miss out on the chance of a lot of great loot if you do).

If you have run out of torches and have no light spell, can you try casting a brief healing spell for illumination? It only lasts an instant, but can be enough to get a better idea of your surroundings.

In every Oblivion gate the aim is to climb up and up this big round tower. At the top is a gate to the Sigillum Sanctum - where the crystal is. You have to keep going in and out of the main centre of the tower to get to a higher level of it.

Options>Video>Brightness pull the slider all the way to the max. No more torches needed.

Sometimes you need to kill a "sigil keeper" for a key to the last door. In Kvatch gate it's the guy who guards the caged prisoner in the side tower accessible through the narrow bridge.

Can you reuse that same key that you found the first time? I closed the Oblivion gate near Kvatch but haven't really gotten around to closing any of the other ones. If this is supposed to be a puzzle or a mystery, let me know before you post the answer.

Since I've been chilling in Anvil so much these days, that Oblivion gate on the hilltop outside of town is starting to irritate me because I have to look at it every time I go outside of town. I'm starting to think about going in there and showing some daedra the business end of an elvish longsword.

No. Each gate has its respective key (or more frequently none at all) but only in Kvatch the keeper is in a separate tower. In all the others I've found, the Sigil Keeper stands straight in front of the locked door, no seeking, no puzzle.

That particular gate you're talking about is a part of a later quest but you can safely close it now, will save you some work (in that quest) later.

I don't remember ever having to find a key, except in the Kvatch one (which my memory is hazy on).

Perhaps it's just the Main Quest gates that require a key?

I have had to do complicated things with levers and stuff to open bridges.

Hmm

Other gates have keys as well, but more often than not they do not require a key of any kind.

Newb, the sigil stone which is your objective is in the big tower thing. If your not sure where to go just stay in the towers and keep clearing out rooms, soon enough you'll be on track.

And another tip. The sigil stone can be used to enchant a weapon or piece of armor. Make sure to save the game just before you grab it. If you don't like what you get, reload and try again.

All oblivion gates are slightly different and for that reason I cannot recall exactly where you need to go in yours. Many times you need to go through caverns though. I would try that.
