Good local bands...

I don't know how many of you like rock or rap or anything, but I'm an all-around kind of guy. I wanted to share with you all my favorite local band, residing in Asheville, NC. (That's actually a state away, but they play venues here a lot.) They go by the name of Secret Lives of the Freemasons. Secret Lives for short.

It's pretty much alternative rock with screamo infused. Not many people accept that type of music, but I completely understand.

Thay have a song called "Painting Monsters" which is actually about one of their painter friends who (I think.) took his own life.
Here are the lyrics...

Miserable hospital bed,
Please, don't you take my friend?
We really need him here.
Don't let this be the end!

I was hanging, I was hanging,
on every word you said,
about how your life was grand,
and there's beginnings in ends.
But life is just a little harder down here.

We are, we are shooting stars.
Hope we can meet again,
Hope we can meet again.

Cuz we are, we are shooting stars.
Hope we can meet again,
Hope we can meet again.

I fell apart right here.
The cold floor; it met my head.
Overwhelmed by fear of just not having you here.
And all those monsters that you painted...
Well they all became real, well they all became real,
and tore you apart in the end...
Oh, in the end...

We are, we are shooting stars.
Hope we can meet again,
Hope we can meet again.

Cuz we are, we are shooting stars.
Hope we can meet again,
Hope we can meet again...

I won't forget one thing; still remember your face.
Well, I know you are home now.
I won't forget one thing; still remember your face.
Well, I know you are home...

Hey, hey, hey, hey!
We go, "B-I-L-L-I-E!"
We won't forget a thing.
No, not a thing.

Anyways, start naming names.

Ooh, let's see. I'm from two localities so I should be able to find a few.

Sennen are from Norwich, post-rock guitars with Simon & Garfunkel vocal harmonies, able to go from delicate to a pulverising wall of noise via some incredible build-ups.

Shady Bard are my favourite band I've discovered in Birmingham so far, they're actually getting quite well-known now but are still originally from Birmingham. Think Sigur Ros fronted by a hippy Nick Cave and you're most of the way there.

Three of Fields are also from Birmingham (the other two are from London and, er, Reykyavik) so they sort of count. It's electro-indie-folk fusion, and they are currently renowned in trendy indie circles for being one of the loudest bands around at the moment - listen to Song For The Fields and The Death and you'll see what I mean.

And of course The Twang are from Birmingham but they are an awful, awful band who don't deserve linkage.

That's where I went to college, lol. Done at the Char Bar! I have had conversation with the lead singer, who wrote this song!

Not there usaul fair, but this particular song was a hit amongst us at that time!

Well of course, Alien Massacre are great but then, I'm biased, 'cause my brother's in it.

If we're going for shameless self-promotion, Primeval Blue are a reasonable Suffolk-based band to which yours truly contributes vocals, a bit of guitar and a lot of weird noises.

My buddys band "Trains Followed Us" is getting pretty popular. I think they have a myspace but i dont feel like looking it up. Not my style, but they are pretty talented.

Then theres Lynyrd Skynyrd, or is that cheating?
