The Shivering Isles....What do you think? (Bit of a spoiler)

Post by Angelmaker »

I've been playing in The Shivering Isles lately, as some of you know and I wondered what people think of it. What you think of it compared to the main game, the enjoyability of the quests etc and whether you think it's value for money

I only starting playing SI last week, and though it's got some amusing moments...i'm not convinced i like it as much as Obliv.
I'm hoping that as time goes on i'll like it more.

Well I personally think that it's an awesome expansion. Bethesda did a wonderful job on it, I mean I love how they did the environment, the people, the creature, the armor, weapons, and items you can collect, and so on. I really feel it was well worth it.

For me Oblivion felt like a realistic game, which looked like it was medieval instead of fantasy. There were no weird things, except the Oblivion world and the creatures of course, and it was a good choice in my opinion.
For these reasons Oblivion is also a modern RPG.
But after more then 1000 hours of playing in that world, you want something new. And you don't want something like Knights of the Nine or Vile Lair that's in exact the same world. No, you want something strange, something totally new.
And I found that in the Shivering Isles expansion. For me, going to the SI is like going on a vacation, I can forget about Cyrodiil for a while and experience new things. When I want to go back to Cyrodiil, I'll 'quit the vacation', but then most of the times I go back within a few days.
So in my opinion SI is a perfect expansion pack, but if you're looking something that looks like Oblivion (so just more Oblivion), well, then maybe you'll think it sucks.

Yeah I see what you mean. It's obviously not going to have anywhere near the depth as the original but i wish there was a greater variety of creatures in it though. But I agree that it is quite a nice change from Cyrodriil and as you can go back and fourth it's not like you are stuck there. I miss having somewhere to store my stuff though as I don't know what's safe and what isn't. Haven't got a house at all yet and not sure if you can get one.

Ahh, the SI is a wonderful place, except when it's horrible then it's horribly wonderful. But I mean, that twisted landscape is just perfect for sightseeing and all the native wildlife tastes wonderful. The sentient inhabitants works splendidly in pies but also make for lots of pleasant conversations and from what I've heard Weka lives in Crucible that alone makes the SI a horribly wonderful place. Nevermind, I'm of to make some cloud pies with clown on top.

You just can't beat madness

Can't find it either.

But you can go to the Construction Set (if you're on pc) and go to the SI chests and see which off them are respawning. I haven't got time for that now, but tomorrow I'll give you a list of it.

It's the first item in the FAQ.

Major spoiler in there. And a touch on other containers, one suggestion I believe.

I liked it for a lot of reasons, including but not limited to: (warning spoilers)

Sheogoroth is just a riot! There were interesting uses of the engine, things like Duskfan/Dawnfang and Ruin's Edge, plus the new types of traps, and rebuilding the Gatekeeper.
The side quests are perfectly mad! The Dark Defenders and Golden Saints (Mazkan and Aurans) are just hot. Last but not least, there's Cutter, the only "goth" Bosmer in the whole game.
All-in-all, a truly awesome expansion.

How can you not love Sheogorath? He's easily the funniest NPC in all the games I've played. He's also mad as a March Hare. But that's what makes him so funny! Example:

"Something's got to work! Once, I dug a huge pit and filled it with clouds. Or was it clowns? Doesn't matter! Didn't slow [Jygalagg] down a bit! And after a while, it really began to smell! Must have been clowns! Clouds don't smell bad! They taste of butter!... and tears!"

-The Prince of Madness himself, when asked how the player can stop the Greymarch.

Also:

"Hold your tongue, mortal! Or I will!"

-Guess who!

Perfectly insane comedic genius!

Cheese for everyone! Wait. Scratch that. Cheese for no one! That is still considered a party to those who don't like cheese.

If you're looking for a safe storage spot that's easy to access early on in the game, then read on.

SPOILER!!!!!

Once you complete The Lady of Paranoia quest, Ma'zaddha's cupboard (in his bedroom - 2nd floor) is safe to store items in after you loot his corpse for the key. I use his cupboard for storage every time I play through SI and its never respawned on me.

You mean Uncle Leo in Muurine's house? He doesn't appear to be connected to anything, so kill him if you like.

Kill him if you like? Why would you do such a thing? Killing someone who's already dead? Who deserves to die twice?
I would recommend use him as your slave, dog, practice target or family guy. ;)

I might find a use for him then. He freaks me out a bit and there is no way I would sleep in that bed with him wandering up and down. Shame you can't get him to go outside and see what he get's up to.

SI rating

So I've only been playing it for a few hours now, and I dont know what to think.

Note I have a headache. The color scheme in both parts of the island (mostly the southern part) hurt my eyes and I have a really good TV. I don't care for (at this point) how entrances to caves arent very clear. I also don't like how its a pain to tell what services a settlement offers without going right up to the door. The NPCs are also annoying as hell.

I was describing this game as a whole to a friend and he asked what SI was like in comparison to the base game. I think the best comparison is SI is like tumbling down the rabbit hole. It really is so ridiculously surreal. My complaints above aside, it really is remarkable in some instances that its even the same game as Oblivion. Visually, its like the designers said, "Well, we've done a Tolkien world in its entirety, what else can we do?" SI is the brainchild of some twisted minds.

I simply don't know. I hope the visuals become less mindnumbing, as pretty as they are. I hope the NPCs STFU, which I dont see happening. I hope the missions are at least unique; in that the game looks like it will succeed.

Over all, I cant complain. For a console gamer, this is the most amazing bargain of a game, bar none. With every expansion thats out there for the 360, Ive spent maybe 75$ total on the game and gotten nearly 500 hours of playing time. Thats insane, and I really shouldnt wine about a portion of the game thats truely optional. Maybe it will get better. I really look forward to reading what other people think.

Well maybe he's going to lean over on you and turn you into some kind of a zombie vampire thing... must be cool ;)

Shivering Isles could be a bit more weirder, but it's a fantastic expansion pack. If you don't like the colors, then change the brightness of your screen.
And you can't compare Cyrodiil to Middle-Earth (even though they're both in the middle of the world :P). Cyrodiil is more looking like a medieval world, like Europe, with the Alps in France to the North (Bruma), the fields from France/Belgium in the middle, the docks to the south in Holland (Anvil)...

There's no Mount Doom, there are no hobbits, goblins, orks or something like that. Yes, there are Orcs, but they're human-like and only have a green color and long teeth.

And when you take a look at the quests, rewards, NPC's and dungeons in SI, they're not just a weirder version of those in Cyrodiil. They're totally different.
And personally I love the NPC's. THey're all so freaky nuts ;)

I like how, for the most part, each NPC has their own individual flavor of insanity. I personally enjoy SI a bit more than the main game. The main quest is much more interesting as well. I also love how both Mania and Dementia look.

Where is the room you get given after lighting one of the fires in that ceremony? I presumed it was in the palace and seeing as it was the Dementia fire I lit I thought that my room would be in there but when I go up to the bed it has a red symbol as though I'm trespassing and so does the bed in Mania. Just want to know so that I put equipment in a storage place in somewhere I own that wont respawn
