longsword or claymore ?

Is it worth taking a claymore instead of a longsword at cost of one hand and speed ?

Well claymore does more damage. But sword is faster like you said but it also can go with a shield so...
Sword: better defense and
claymore: more attack power.

i think it depends on who you're fighting against
if you're fighting against bandits or sth like that, a longsword and shield would be the best
if you're fighting against bigger creatures like minotaurs, trolls ogres a claymore is better, because a shield kinda wouldn't be enough protection because these enemies are too strong

Well i'm trying to create my ultimate armor so i must choose, check my topic enchanting items and help me there too ^^
I think if i enchant my gloves with a light spell, i take claymore

Nero you have a good point. It does depend but if you had to choose it depends again. Are you more defensive or offensive? If you are defensive the choose sword. If your offensive the choose claymore.

claymore

it shall be claymore then thanks to nero's logic :
bandits are ALWAYS easy to defeat but a litle easier with sword but monsters are quiet difficult with sword so i'll take claymore

There is a saying, I forget where its from. If there are two generals, one defensive and one offensive, the offensive one always wins. Thus i like claymores, although it does depend on the enemy. If I am fighting an npc or an enemy with very strong blade attacks, I use my longsword. If its a strong blunt, I don't even bother because it would stagger me anyway. Oh, and a cookie for claymore when you use the backward power attack on a skeleton, there head pops off. Hilarious.

Not really longsword... katana.

Also no shield... just continuously block with the weapon, once you hit Journeymen you don't need to worry about block damaging weapons.
Err... and by katana I don't mean crappy Dai-Katanas like in MW or two-handers in OB. Things like Goldbrand and Ebony Blade

Oooh those are kewl, enchant a akaviri katana, that'd be sweet...but they are more decorative than my liking...

Which is exactly why I use Goldbrand and Ebony Blade. Although I made an enchanted set of Blade armor with the katana with it, enchanting the katana with a transcendent absorb health.

But the Ebony Blade is still my favorite katana in-game (no mods cuz I'm on the 360

)

Remember that you get no sneak attack multiplier with a Claymore. If you never sneak attack anyhow, that's not an issue.

What! you dont ? i could've sworn you did...

Well you do... but the multiplier is x1. If you know ANY math beyond addition and subtraction... yeah you see how pointless it is to sneak attack with a two-handed weapon.

I am offended..i can do divison, precentage..etc. etc. in my head...i am a math wiz...i just never attack with claymores..i find them useless.

Lets look at Minotaur Lords:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Monst ... taur_Lords
Health 22/Level - Damage 24+(lvl/2) pts melee
Lets say Level 28: health 616 - Damage 38
Lets look at weapons:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Weapo ... de_Weapons
Daedric Longsword: Damage 24 - Speed 1.0
Daedric 2-Hand Sword: Damage 26 - Speed 0.8
Number of hits to Kill the Minotaur Lord:
Longsword: 25.6 Hits
2-Hand Sword: 23.69 Hits
Using Speed = Time to Kill the Minotaur Lord:
Longsword: 25.6 Seconds
2-Hand Sword: 29.6 Seconds
The 2-Hand Sword takes 4 seconds longer. How much damage can the Minotaur Lord do in 4 seconds?
We know the ML attack is slower, lets just say 1 attack every 2 seconds, at 38 damage:
25.6 seconds = 486.4 health lost
29.6 seconds = 562 health lost
That is a differenece of almost 76 health.
Now Enchanting your weapons can add more damage, and reduce the number of hits & time to Kill. However, you can enchant both the same. The type of weapon does not allow a greater enchantment. Thus neither weapon type gains an advantage here.
On the other hand, you can gain an additional enchantment with a shield. Tell me that the Escutcheon of Chorrol http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Leveled_Items#Shields won't be the difference maker.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Armor
The Armor Rating displayed in the table represents the percentage of damage the piece of armor absorbs.
A shield adds to your Armor Rating, and Absorbs Damage. This makes it even more important at higher levels.

wow! you got technical there...Am i the only one who read the entire thing ?
Oh, P.S. I dont think there is a Daedric claymore...only a bound one, and a dremora one...

Nope, OB didn't leave out any items in the sets like MW used to on occasion. There are Daedric claymores, but they're mostly seen on the highest rank Dremora or Xivilai. Random loot lvl 20+ works too.
-EDIT-
Also... the reason I voted for JUST longswords... is that at Expert or Master of block, you just stop taking physical damage period. Given that enemies RARELY do large amounts of elemental damge, enchantments can easily take care of the rest, as well as natural resistances, etc.

Hmm...Really i haven't seen one...i'm level 45...i'm probably gonna look for one, you got me hooked..

I don't like any two handed weapons. You get additional armor class carrying a shield and block works better with a shield than with a weapon.
longsword

now, i think i shall take only longsword, the shield slows me down

Claymores do look pretty cool strapped to your back while you're on your travels, though.
It used to be claymores all the way for me, until I got my hands on Duskfang/Dawnfang - I swear, I'm in love with that sword.

I've never had a claymore-type character. Next playthrough I think I'll play that way. I've been meaning to do a warrior again.

I'm now playing with an "I want power" High Elf, who wants to be the new Ayleid King of Cyrodiil, and he's a spellsword.
I think longswords are much cooler then claymore's because all the nice weapons like Umbra and Goldbrand are longswords.
The Akaviri Dai-Katana is the only claymore that I ever use.

The whole time I've used claymores I've spent screaming "swing the **** thing already!" add that to the fact that longswords encummer you less and that the best swords in the game are usually longswords, I'm voting longsword.
