i'd say any level is possible with time and a few exploits...the one where you max your skills get a huge bount and get sent to jail and level up those skills again and repeat...
but theres no real point to that unless you want to become level 100 with no extra skills or anything

The max level you can reach without exploiting the game glitches is 54. But that requires that you start with all your major skills at 25, which means they can't be your specialization or racial boost skills. An average max level falls in the 40's. But there is really no point in going higher because leveled items max at lvl 30, and the creatures keep leveling up with you. You get no special bonuses for going over a hundred in any of your skills anyways.

The highest possible Natural Level, is 53. You can get the Oghma Infinium from doing the Hermaeus Mora's Daedric Shrine quest. If all 3 skills that it gives the +10 to are major skills, you could get to level 56.
You can use the Jail Exploit, to gain a few more levels.
Personally, I do not feel there is a reason to get above level 30, which will give you the best quality of all of the Leveled Item Quest Rewards. I actually enjoy playing without all of my Skills and Attributes at 100.

My MW characters were past the 50's, but highest in Oblivion is only 45 or something. Tho it's almost pointless being that good, because by that time not only are your stats maxed out or nearly there - but your equipment makes you practically invincible.

I got to level 144.... using the console to get all my major skills to level 255, the highest you can possibly go.

Using the console, you could theoretically go to 255 couldn't you? With advlevel?

Everyone always says that 255 is the maximum.
But I was able to use the Construction Set to boost skills like Athletics, Speed and Acrobatics to 10.000 or even higher.
I pressed 'e' (jump) and I jumped so high that the game crashed.
But this was also possible with attributes like strength, I hit the Adoring Fan once and I'm sure he landed somewhere in Morrowind

If you want to reach a high level, try something like this:
Race: Breton
Specialization: Stealth
Attributes: Personality & Luck
Major skills: All combat skills
All your major skills start out at 25

Because it USUALLY is...
255 is the max mathematically normally, but apparently not in Oblivion o.o
Either that or it will allow you to do it out of game, but cant compute it if you try to do it in game? Iono... either way, I'd like to see the adoring fan flying out of nowhere while exploring lol... only to remember whacking him a week ago

255 is the max you can raise using the Console Commands. 256 starts back at 1.
Using the Construction Set, you can put any number in, but like you said, it may crash.
Using enchantments, spells, potions, glitches, ect, in game you can take them over 255.

Although there is limited space for enchantments..... unless you are using an "infinite jewelry" or "overpowered enchanted item" mod.

I meant using all of them, not just one.

Yes, but with only 8 slots for enchantments, you can't take them that far over 255 in vanilla.

8? Not 9??
But then Jeff was talking about alot more than just Enchantments as well....

I was talking about enchantment-wise only. It is possible with spells........ either you have 100 restoration or use the weakness to magicka on self to multiply the effects. And potions, without using the glitch, you can only drink 4 of at a time.
3 jewelry, cuirass, boots, gauntlets, greaves, and helmet.

You can enchant shields too.
