Is Oblivion worth it?

I'm new here...

I am thinking about buying Oblivion, but I will need to upgrade my video card and possibly my RAM. On a small gaming budget, this will mean all of Xmas money

I loved Morrowind, and I'm currently replaying it, but after reading the gripes section on uesp.net, I am a little leary about Oblivion...

Is the game as bad as they make it sound?

Is the leveling system that dysfunctional?

I usually am not a Mod'er...I like games for their purity of design...most of the time. I'd just like to hear some thoughts and suggestions for a newbie before he spends hard earned Xmas money :P . Thanks.

Why do people gripe...? Becuase they can.

I have played Morrowind, and I liked it. I have also played Oblivion, and I like it too. They both have their strong points, and weak points.

No offense, but I kinda figured that out already...

I'd like to hear YOUR opinions. The good, bad, and ugly of it all.

Don't ruin my cryptic moment... :P

I don't mind the Level Scaling, your get used to it. However, I do mind that some creature dissappear after you exceed their level, or that you don't run into Ogres until later. Same with some items/equipment. It was a nice idea, it just didn't get executed that well.

People complain about the bugs/glitches, but Morrowind had it's share too. I play on PC, and so far, there are not any that I have not seen a fix for. I have been lucky, and only have a few. I am pretty proficient on reading the CS, and using the Console though. On Game Consoles, that is another issue.

One of the big problems with the Bugs/Glitches, is when people exploit them. After a certain point, when you abuse a game to much, you can't fix it. Same with using the Console.

Other than that, I've been pretty happy with it.

I don't think you'll get an unbiased sample of responses on a forum dedicated to the game (especially since it's over a year old).

Avoiding the question: you can think of hardware upgrades as an investment that will help you enjoy other games, not just Oblivion. So get the hardware regardless of whether or not you want to play this game.

I like the game a lot, but I never played Morrowind so I can't compare. The leveling system isn't dysfunctional if you understand it going in, and pick major/minor skills appropriately. I don't like min-maxing (I don't know the Oblivion-equivalent term, I hope you know what I mean), and I don't worry about leveling 100% efficiently.

If you pick alchemy and stealth as majors for your assassin character, yes, you will have a much harder time than someone who picks only skills they don't use for their warrior, and has maxed out blade, block, and heavy armor by the time they hit level 5. The difficulty slider is there for a reason.

In most cases, you should be fine picking most of your main combat skills as your majors and leveling up naturally. Knowing the main pitfalls in advance will let you do well--just don't make a skill your major if it is ridiculously easy to level it up and if it doesn't help you fight/stay alive.

I love the game, but then I never played Morrowind either. It seems worth it, but then it's only relative to what your other options of spending your money on are.

It also depends on what you are like with games, do you think it likely that you'll only play through once and then that's it? I think this game is well suited to people who use their imagination in conjunction with the game, rather than just suspend all thought while playing. And I think if you're like that, you're far more likely to get more value out of the game for a longer time.

I've never had probs with maxing out my levelling bonuses, but I always make sure that I choose Majors that either level slowish, or that I don't need to rely on.

People are probably starting to find it annoying since I constantly talk about how great it is, but I simply can not recommend you buy Oblivion without getting Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. The auto-scaling system is really stupid, and Oscuro, by fixing the leveling to make the gameplay more closely resemble Morrowind, and adding lots of new content, adds months if not years to the amount of time you will be able to spend on the game before shelving it.

Otherwise, you have a game where wherever you go, you are always fighting the same things, and you are punished for leveling up by having parts of the game that were already there become more difficult. With Oscuro, leveling up lets you breeze past areas you've mastered, while discovering interesting new stuff that you couldn't feasibly access before without God Mode.

With Oscuro, and on the computer, I would definitely recommend Oblivion.

Imagine Morrowind with all the good parts taken out, and the bad parts replaced by awesome parts. then you have Oblvion.

on the other hand, imagine taking all of Morrowind's weak points and Oblivon's weak points, and you have Two Worlds.

Undoubtedly worth it in my eyes, infinitely more playable than Morrowind. Intelligently designed and beautiful, on of my favourite all time games.

Can you say "Best Game Ever"?

If you can, buy it.

If you can't, buy it anyway.

Trust me (& everyone else here) it rocks ;)

I'm obsessed. I've completely went through every quest at least 2 or 3 times, and I started a new game two days ago again. It's fun playing a game in one way (stealth/thief, for example) then going through again playing differently (eg: warrior). It's good enough that I'm about to fork out ANOTHER $50 to get it again for the PC. Mods.. here I come.

Let's not get into Two Worlds here. Everyone I know who's played it loves it, and everyone who hasn't played it it think's it's the worst game ever.

I've played two worlds. trust me. In and of it's own merits, it was an ok game, but I wouldn't pay 60 for it. I just rented it. what killed it was the overhyping.
