Just finished the main quest...

Wow. What an excellent game. I still have tons of stuff to do like most of the guilds, maxing all my stats, clearing all the dungeons, getting the rest of the daedric artifacts, etc. But a part of me knows that a big part of my playing this game is over with. I have a sense of completion and the real danger in Cyrodiil is over.
It's been a long journey but a GREAT one. This is probably the best game i've ever played and very addictive. This is my first elder scrolls game and because of this I might just check out Morrowind. (I'm guessing all the others before that are kind of out dated?)
I'm currently a level 26 and bought my first house (Skingrad) and got all the upgrades. Life shall be easy for Arete Thorne from now on...but the adventuring continues!

Congratulations!
I hope you enjoy the rest of the game as much as the Main Quest, there's still plenty out there to do.

Well you were cut off from the main part of the battle which occured at legion bunker. So you only see the remaining guard and a few others battleing it out. The ending was a bit unexpected, stupid martin and his suicide....I miss him

Yeah but the game wouldn't be the same if all of a sudden your best buddy was the emperor, you'd never be arrested or anything because Martin would just let you off.

I am on my second play through of the full game. I have restarted numerous times playing with different races. This time, I have not even begin the main quest. I am currently a 39th level Dark Elf Sorcerer. I think I am enjoying this more not having started the main quest and I am playing through all of the other quest. Doing a lot of adventuring. All the time I know that I need to take on the big guys in the main quest but I want to see how the main quest goes playing at as high of a level Sorcerer as a can obtain.

The Main Quest is my least favourite part of the whole game, I've never actually finished it yet. I'm not spoiler adverse (though I don't go looking for them), but I did hear about the ending long before I got there, and I already wasn't enjoying it as much as other aspects anyhow. So it was just a case of "why bother"!

There's actually a pretty cool easter egg in that house...

Yep, a nice little quest that will be completed in-house.
I too love the main quest. I'll admit that I know the ending without getting there(yet), but my questions go much further. Does the line of emperors just end? If so, does the council rule with impunity? The list goes on.

I must agree that I didn't like most of the main quest at all. I found doing oblivion gates rather boring and selfrepeating. There was some glorymoments to the quest, but the oblivion gates really took that taste out of the overall picture. I like the guildquests much more

I'll have to agree, the Oblivion Gates are one of the reason that the Main Quest is my least favorite. They are just boring, and redundant...
The first time, I didn't realize that there were so many, so only did the ones you have to close (including the Help for Bruma). The next time, I tried to close them all. It was the least favorite time I've spent playing the game.

Yeah, same here. If you know how the planes of Oblivion work, you can close the gates easily. I just close enough to get all the sigil stones I want/need.

What was annoying was that after you knew how the planes of Oblivion worked, it was too easy. For what is supposed to be a near apocalytpic event, the actual realm of Oblivion was too easy. I mean, I never felt as though Oblivion presented that much of a threat. Ever.

I agree. You wake up after a lvl+, take you're sword out of the adoring fan, and say "ok, time to close another apocoliptic wastland" not really somthing you need to prepare for.
And unfortunately i thought after you do the main quest that there would still be oblivion gates around. (Another reason why im stuck as a vampire

)
Congradulations on the completion of the main quest though!

If the game gets too easy, isn't that what the difficulty slider is for?

It's less about difficulty killing them than it is numbers. Even with the difficulty all the way up, it always feels as though it's just a small gaggle of [&@%!] daedra, never an army of them.

For me, it's not about being too easy, it's about there only being 7 Gate layouts. It's like doing the same Quest 6-7 times... booooooring.

Exactly, once I had to do the same plane of Oblivion three times in a row. I started taking shortcuts by going through lava whenever I can to avoid caves, tunnels, and towers.

yea, oblivion gates sucked. they sounded really cool on the box but they really should have done a lot more with them than they did.

Would've been cool to have some intercation with a different god or something in each plane, a voice in ur head would've done it.

Oblivion itself wasn't bad, it just lost it's...balls after you realized it wasn't as badass as it looked.

main quest left somewhat of a feeling of deux ex machina, I liked Morrowind's storyline much better.

I like how the main quest ended, what with the Empire saved but not whole and not without troubling times directly ahead. Makes it a ripe time for Mods. I always imagined this:
Timeline:
1- Main quest line up to getting Martin to Cloud Ruler.
2- Fighter's Guild and Mage's Guild questlines running concurrently. You can fill in the blanks using your imagination in both stories this way.*Thieves and DB quests can be here as well.*
3- KotN and all MQ quests up until the end. This way, you can say that Umaril was unleashed at just the wrong(Or right) time, and you fit the prophecy even better this way.
4- ALL MOD STORIES.
5- Shivering Isles. Tell me if I'm wrong, but don't you become/take over for Lord Sheggorath at the end of SI? It would be hard to even act like just a normal hero then.
Hence, in my mind, SI is the end of the line for the player character. The first three cover all guilds, the main quest, and the short KotN questline. Four covers all other stories and Mods, bridging the gap. Then SI ends your player.
