“Stolen” tag on gold

The “stolen” gold glitch is present on all new characters.
EDIT 07SEP2026 Unlike the rest of the gold you collect during the game, loose gold coin items are subject to the same crime mechanics as other items. /EDIT
Start a game, collect nothing while escaping Helgen except the armor and weapons indicated by arrow (chest or dead stormcloak). Arrive at Riverwood with 0 gold. Steal loose coin inside Riverwood Trader then check the gold using a container. The gold will be marked, “Stolen”. (PS4,AE,ver1.6.1158.0.8,no mods) (PS3,ver1.0.5.0,original release.) (Switch,ver1.1.404.0.8 )
I’ve been collecting information and it seems too much and varied to keep on the ‘talk’ page for ‘Skyrim:Crime’ while still searching. I’ll add my discoveries here until I’m more certain of my answers.

FIX

EDIT Mar 06,2026 This is not a fix. I simply discovered one of the many game mechanics that “hides” specific gold tracked as stolen./EDIT

The following action stops gold from being marked as stolen: “Take” any loose individual coins (not in a pouch or any container) from an NPC that has become your friend. Such as Gerdur or Alvor during the quest “Before the Storm” or Jarl Siddgeir during the quest “Thane of Falkreath”.

One odd prerequisite is that the location must first respawn at least once after initially “discovering” the location before taking the coins. In my testing I would become friends which would change the loose coins from having the option to “Steal” to the option to “Take”. I would then go to a nearby town and “sleep” or “wait” for eleven 24hr periods before returning to take the coins.

A second prerequisite is that you must not be carrying any marked gold when taking the friend’s coin. The easiest way I found to accomplish this was by placing all my gold in a container outside my “friend’s” house. Entering and taking a loose coin, then exiting and retrieving the gold I had stored, would also clear the “stolen” tag from all coins.

Notes:
You only need to take 1 coin but may take all.

If you are carrying marked coins when taking the friend’s coin, any new coins will continue to be marked as stolen. However, if you immediately clear the stolen tags (using a follower), the fix will be enabled. (I did not test this further.)

Although this initially stops gold from being marked as stolen, I have had later game saves where the glitch has returned. I have not yet discovered the cause and doing so is my current goal.

I just started my first playthrough of Skyrim this year--I just purchased it for the switch. While I could complain at length about how various items my character possessed have unexpectedly become "stolen", I've never noticed it with gold.

My first question is: how can I reproduce this? You say it needs to be a "new character". I guess my question would be "how new?". Does this only occur with the very first gold you acquire? It's a little unclear to me -- the prerequisites in your second post--they're things to do to fix the bug, not things you do to make it happen, right?

Another question, from the "I'm still kinda new at Skyrim" department -- how much does it matter? Will honest merchants accept "stolen" gold? If I want to buy a 100-gold item, and I only have 100 gold, but one of them is "stolen", will the merchant only acknowledge 99 of my gold?

This is still interesting, even if it "doesn't matter".

Welcome to Skyrim, bsammon. Most importantly; it really doesn’t matter. Although I’m investigating an issue where later characters sometimes have their gold confiscated by guards, this is under specific and unusual circumstances. Generally it’s just appearances only. Ignore it and play like normal. Gold is gold and NPCs don’t care.
Yes; for testing at this time it must be a new character. This is because it is too easy to (accidentally) fix it, but not remember that single gold coin you picked up from a friend.
New characters begin with this “bug”, but after intentionally, or accidentally picking up a friend’s gold coin, I haven’t figured out how to cause it again. Though I have many play throughs were it occurs multiple times.

Save Game Notes
PS3, LE, ver 1.9.31.08
(Kickin myself for deleting old saves to “save space”.)
My original playthrough is a character that avoided crime. 708 days passed, lvl 104, Legendary every skill at least once, I recently began to try crime. 38 trespasses, 8 items stolen, 3 pockets picked, 2 item’s pickpocketed, 1 time jailed, (0 jail escapes, days jailed, or fines paid : How was I jailed once but those numbers remained zero? I don’t know. I assume I chose jail time when I got caught picking a pocket and the time served was too small to register a day.) My Character is carrying 1,087,060 gold and no “stolen” tag. If I punch a guard in Whiterun, lower my fists, and choose to pay the bounty; the 40 gold fine is taken, but zero items end up in the Evidence Chest in the Dragonsreach Dungeon. If I “steal” a pouch of gold, or gold from a container, or pickpocket some gold before punching the guard, the same thing occurs. Zero items in evidence. However; if I “steal” any loose coins, even though there is no “stolen” tag when checking my inventory, those coins are confiscated and found in the Evidence Chest.

IT’S ALL AN ILLUSION
From the start of your character until the time you are done playing, and all of your saves in-between, you have the “stolen” gold bug. Any loose individual coins you steal that were labeled “Steal Gold” (specifically from NPC homes, inns, or longhouses) will retain information within game mechanics that the item was stolen. There are several game mechanics that will hide this from you. There are game mechanics that will clear this information (just like fencing other stolen items). But the fact remains that no one “accidentally” acquires the bug. From 2011 to the latest version and update — You “Always” have it. Occasionally, you become aware of it; when you notice for the first time there is a tag on your gold that says “stolen”, or that one play through where you paid your fine to a guard and discovered that not only did they take your fine but also took additional gold and placed it in evidence. We believe that the bug is rare because it is mostly hidden from us, because it rarely affects us…if ever; but it’s all an illusion. In programming, if a bug is rarely noticed and even less often causes a problem…the only fix you need is illusion.
My next post will give you steps to test that the above is true.

I appreciate your assurance that I shouldn't "worry" about this.

But I'm still finding this interesting.

And I'm very confused. I don't understand what the bug is. In one place it seems like you're saying that when you steal gold that gold shouldn't have a stolen tag, but the bug is that it does.
Or is this something about gold that you didn't steal being marked stolen, maybe because you are carrying it along with some other gold that is legitimately marked stolen?

I'm tempted to look up one of those "how to report bugs in Linux software" templates I've seen and post it here. It's usually something like:
What did you do?
What happened?
What did you expect to happen?

Description of this bug

On UESP the bug is mentioned on the Skyrim:Crime page under the Bugs section.
Reading the Stolen Items section, would also be very helpful.

You are probably aware of how “stealing” items and “taking” items cause different actions in the game world. (You are unable to sell stolen items as easily. Guards may confiscate stolen items if you are confronted. Stolen items will be marked as “stolen” in your inventory.) Generally you are warned the item you are about to take is considered stealing. In containers (barrels, sacks, chests, cabinets, etc.) these items are printed in red lettering. Often the container itself will warn you by saying; “Steal from sack” rather than “Take from sack”.

…Then there is gold. Although gold appears like all the other items in the world, it doesn’t behave the same. Gold can be in red lettering indicating it is stealing to take it, or in white lettering indicating you are free to take it without repercussions or consequences. If anyone witnesses you stealing gold, the crime mechanics are the same as stealing other items; however, once it is in your inventory, there is no difference (visual or behavioral) than any gold you legally collected. It is not marked with a “stolen” tag in your inventory. Guards will not confiscate it when confronting you. You can use it for any purchases, bounties, or bribes, like any other gold.

Why does gold behave differently? Truthfully I don’t think we have a definitive answer. Some have argued that it would be impossible (in the real world) to recognize that “this” gold piece was stolen, but “that” gold piece was lawfully gained. The only problem is you could apply that logic to almost all of the items in Skyrim. Other theories are given as the reason for gold’s behavior, but generally it has just been accepted as “this is how it’s supposed to be”. Who really wants to be forced to get out a calculator in the middle of a game to subtract stolen gold from regular gold to make sure you have enough?

Now we need to pause and discuss how gold doesn’t actually show up in your inventory like other items. On all the versions I have played, the amount of gold you are carrying appears at the bottom of your screen when you open the “Items” menu or when you are bartering with a merchant. It is not something you can select. While all the other items in your inventory are listed so that you can select the item to perform an action. (“Equip” shield, “Eat” carrot, “Drink” potion, “Sell” basket) There are actions that can be taken with gold. Storing in containers or when trading with a follower. During these actions you will find gold listed and selectable with all your other items.

The Bug
Though it is possible you will never see it, occasionally someone will scroll through their items as they store them in some container and will notice that when they select gold, it now has a “stolen” tag on it. “How did that get there?” “I’ve stolen hundreds of gold coins and it never said “stolen” before!” I may try to test this. I put all my current gold in a chest in my house. I go out and pickpocket gold from a guard. When I check my inventory using a container, it doesn’t say “stolen. So, I steal a pouch of gold from the inn and steal some gold from a locked chest in the Jarl’s bedroom, but again when I check with a container, nothing is marked stolen. I conclude that: when I steal gold, it is not marked “stolen”; and yet my gold WAS marked. Why?
Although people have been reporting that they have seen a “stolen” tag on their gold since 2011, as of yet, no one has been able to give a clear reason to why this happens or give instructions that others can reproduce to show how it happens. So the phenomenon is described as a bug on UESP with the following description: “Stolen gold will sometimes be marked as such in your inventory, though the cause of this occurrence is unknown.”

Can you do me a favor bsammon?
You stated that although you have seen the “stolen” tag on other items, you have never seen it on gold. I’d like to show it to you.
  1. Save your game
  2. Travel to the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood
  3. Store all your gold in one of the containers outside
  4. Go inside and steal one of the loose coins lying around
    • There are some on a table in Delphine’s bedroom
    • There are some behind the counter near Orgnar
    • Don’t forget to sneak and ensure you are hidden
  5. Open a container and select “gold” in your inventory
  6. Report your results
EDIT Mar 07,2026 It’s important that the gold coin you steal gives the option, “Steal Gold” and not “Take Gold”. You may have to do your test at another location if at some point you became friends with the owner. It’s also important the gold is one of the individual visable gold coins. Not a bag or pouch or gold found in a container. And it’s very important that you have stored your gold somewhere and are carrying 0 gold before stealing the coin. These things may seem obvious or in some cases completely unnecessary, but it is these slight misunderstandings or variations in process that often make it difficult to find answers to these types of questions. /EDIT

Stealing loose individual gold coins that show the option, “Steal Gold”, causes them to be tracked with your character just like stealing other objects.
  • This may cause your gold to show the “Stolen” tag.
  • This may cause gold to be confiscated.
Why can I still use the gold that is tracked?
You are prevented from selling stolen items because they do not appear in your inventory during bartering. Gold never appears during bartering, so it too (for logical reasons) cannot be sold. Similarly you cannot buy, pay, bribe, etc. using items such as apples or swords. Therefore, there is no logical reason to create a game mechanic that prevents “Stolen” items from being used for payments. This means nothing prevents tracked stolen gold from being used like regular gold.

Why doesn’t it ‘always’ show “Stolen” or is it not ‘always’ confiscated?
Using the word, “may”, sounds like a lack of confidence. On the contrary, it can be proven that these things occur, but there are game mechanics that can interfere and not allow you to see what is going on.
  • The second post in this thread describes a way to prove the “Stolen” tag can be hidden.
  • Because stolen gold can be used to pay fines, it’s possible for some, or all, of the tracked gold to be used paying the fine and therefore not show up in the evidence.

It took me a while to find a place to do this test, as I've made a lot of friends in Skyrim. Most people in Skyrim like me enough to overlook the theft of 1 gold.

The Pawned Prawn in Riften still remembers me as the Thieves Guild enforcer, however, so I could "steal" gold from there.

What I did/what happened:
  • left all but 2 gold at home
  • went to Riften
  • put the 2 gold in barrel A
  • stole 1 gold from behind the counter at the pawned prawn
  • I have one gold in my inventory, marked as "stolen"
  • take the 2 gold from barrel A
  • I have 3 gold in my inventory, marked as "stolen"
  • put 1 gold into barrel A
  • I have 2 gold in my inventory, not marked as "stolen"
  • put 1 gold into barrel B
  • put 1 gold into barrel C
  • take 1 gold from barrel A
  • I have 1 gold in my inventory, marked as "stolen"
  • take 1 gold from barrel B
  • I have 2 gold in my inventory, marked as "stolen"
  • take 1 gold from barrel C
  • I have 3 gold in my inventory, marked as "stolen"
What seems to be happening:
It appears that (in this instance) the game is tracking the stolen status of my gold on a coin-by-coin basis, like it does with regular items. When I have a stack of coins in my inventory, the stolen status of the stack is the stolen status of the coin on the "top" of the stack. When I put gold in a container, it (sometimes?) takes it off the "top" of the stack. When I take gold from a container, it (sometimes?) adds it to the "bottom" of the stack.

I'm not sure there's a consistent behavior about how the game "sorts" your stacks. I've noticed with other items, that I may have a stolen item at the "top" of the stack, and/or a stolen item in the "middle" of the stack, leading to experiences like:
  • I have 5 gold ingots, marked as stolen
  • I drop a gold ingot
  • I have 4 gold ingots, not marked as stolen
  • I drop a gold ingot
  • I have 3 gold ingots, marked as stolen
  • I drop a gold ingot
  • I have 2 gold ingots, not marked as stolen
This reminds my of my days as a database programmer, when I would get my "SORT BY" clauses wrong.

Relatedly, when you reproduce this "bug", have you tried poking at things with the console? I only have Skyrim for the Switch, so the console is not available to me.

Thank you SO much for this. This “sorting” issue that you described is what finally clicked for me and helped me realize what was really going on. This is the reason it was a controversy early on. Two people would test the same thing, but one person saw a stack marked stolen and another saw no change whatsoever. But it really was a matter of how their particular stack was sorted.
There is a stack exchange page where they were trying to figure this out. One person pointed out that when they were fencing stolen items the stolen tag would appear and disappear different times. Another said it would appear about 10% of the time when he would pickpocket gold into an NPC’s inventory and then pickpocket it back out. They were close but had not yet made the connection to the gold changing sort order which would explain both cases. I had this info in mind and my sorting issues trying to sell my most expensive recently enchanted items. They were not in a single stack but would change positions in my inventory and I’d have to keep looking for them. It was finally when running a similar barrel test using only a few coins that it all finally clicked.
Additionally to the “sorting” issue, I should share that I have had multiple times where testing few coins in and out of various containers that some or all coins were cleared of the “stolen” tag. I have not had time to verify if it is something consistent. I haven’t tested since realizing I had a sorting issue confusing me, but I believe if you place the coins marked “stolen” in a container marked “Steal from (Chest, Cabinet, etc)” that is also owned by the person you stole the loose gold coins from; the stolen tracking is removed as if you fenced an item.
Example:
  1. Steal a single gold coin from the counter in front of Lucan Valarian at the Riverwood Trader.
  2. Open the “Steal from Chest” next to the counter and verify the coin is marked “Stolen”.
  3. Place the coin in the chest and then remove it.
    • I would exit and re-enter the chest in this step, but I don’t believe you have to.
  4. Check the coin in your inventory once again. (no longer tagged)
The game has various mechanics that clear the tracking from coins. I know of at least three at the moment and plan to document them when I can share consistent testing methods.

Finally - I just recently purchased a PC and plan to learn how to do some of that poking around. But hopefully someone with greater experience will jump on board so we don’t have to wait for me to teach myself.

P.S.: I just now caught the irony that I was influenced to realize that this was a sorting issue with the stack of gold . . .from a post on a website called “Stack Exchange”.
Also of note: the one guy that said “the “stolen” tag is caused by stealing loose coins”, had his comment downvoted to Oblivion and was completely ignored.

Yeah, the tricky thing is distinguishing "removed the stolen tag" effects from "moved the stolen gold to the middle/bottom of the stack so you can't see the stolen tag" effects.

With standard items, there were a few occasions where I would take a stack of items and drop them one-by-one on the floor so I could then determine which were flagged stolen and which weren't. But I can't do that with gold.

  1. Go to Whiterun
  2. Punch a guard with your “fists”
  3. Immediately put your fists down
  4. Accept going to jail
  5. Sleep off your time served
Any gold tagged as stolen will be placed in the dungeon’s “Evidence Chest”

Don’t accept “pay your 40 gold fine”. Not confirmed but may interfere if some of the tagged gold is taken for the fine. Sleeping off the sentence requires no fine and all tagged items move to the evidence chest.

Perhaps you shouldn’t do this with Khajiiti claws. In that case it might be better to steal a low level item in front of the guard without sneaking.

I don’t quite understand this, but not sure if this might interfere, so I thought I should mention from the “Skyrim:Crime” page:
If you are a Thieves Guild member and have done a reputation quest, you can pay a much lower fine and keep your stolen items in the relevant hold.

Stealing and later becoming friends with the owner
I found an interesting game behavior so I tested it.
WHAT I DID
  1. Started a new character
  2. Ran to Hod’s house in Riverwood
  3. Stored every item in my inventory in a barrel (except lock picks)
  4. Stole everything in his house
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Every item (except picks) tagged as Stolen
WHAT I DID NEXT
  1. Put on clothes I stole
  2. Chopped some firewood
  3. Sold wood to Hod becoming his friend
WHAT HAPPENED
When becoming friends, NPC’s often allow you to take things that previously would be stealing
  • All Items Hod would now normally let me take, had the “stolen” tag removed in my inventory.
  • Those items he would not allow you to normally take, had the Stolen tag still attached
THEN WHAT DID YOU DO
  1. I ran to Whiterun and punched a guard
  2. I slept through my jail sentence and then checked the Evidence Chest
WHAT DID I DISCOVER
  • Most of my items were confiscated even single items without a stolen tag
  • After taking the items, the tag status remained the same as it was before
I even punched another guard and the same tagged and non-tagged items were confiscated.

YOUR CRAZY, THEN WHAT DID YOU DO
  1. I won a brawl with Uthgerd to make her my follower.
  2. I put everything in my inventory in a non-owned barrel
  3. I asked Uthgerd to “Take All” from barrel
  4. I asked Uthgerd to trade and took everything back
This is the cheat we commonly use when you don’t have a fence to sell stolen items to. It removes the Stolen tag and we can sell to regular merchants.
WHAT DID I FIND
  • Non- tagged items remained non tagged, but some tagged items remained tagged
THEN WHAT
  • I punched another guard
AND THE RESULT
  • Various item confiscated whether previously tagged or not
  • That’s a lot of items to track, so now I’m just playing with it
ONE MORE TIME
  • I try to use Uthgerd again to cheat and make items not stolen
RESULT
  • CHAOS AND ANARCHY
  • some tagged, some not
  • Now my lock picks are tagged stolen though I never stole them
  • Now my ragged clothing provided in prison are marked stolen
THE LESSONS I LEARNED
  • While we can (and have) discovered a cause; it doesn’t mean it is the ONLY cause.
  • While we can describe fixes and work-a-rounds; it won’t work for everyone.
  • Using one bug to ‘fix’ another bug is probably bad juju
PROBABLY THE MOST RELEVANT
Becoming friends not only affected future action (Option to “take” instead of “steal”), It affected past choices by changing items in my inventory. I don’t believe this was intended behavior. But if it was, it is implemented poorly and is probably the cause of much confusion surrounding this topic.

EDIT - Mar 10,2026 It is a known bug that when asking a follower to take items from a container they can become marked with the “Stolen” tag. (Though I haven’t seen this with Gold) https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Followers#Bugs /EDIT

In Recognition of Iszi

Posted: Tue Mar 10, 2026 1:53 am
by Satribe
On January 19,2012 a user going by the name Iszi posted a question on Arqade, a Q&A site that’s part of Stack Exchange. He asked; “Under what conditions might gold be flagged as stolen?”
Let's settle this once and for all. I personally have witnessed my gold (or, at least, some of it) being marked as stolen in my inventory in the past. I've seen several comments around here from people who claim the same. Though none of us can yet explain it, I believe there's no longer any point in arguing that it does happen.
If the date-stamps are correct, the discussion quickly expanded to multiple topics and fizzled to a close on February 2nd. I’m not recognizing this for finding an answer, but because of this one question a small group of people shared their experiences. They weren’t claiming to have all the answers but shared their experience and tossed their speculations into the ring. That type of information can be valuable to thinking of how to test and think differently than you would on your own. I believe it was valuable to me, so I thought I’d share a couple of those things.

Iszi began creating a spreadsheet documenting all the things they stole, where they stole them from, and if any became marked as stolen. User Ben Blank asked:
Did you drop, store, or otherwise divest yourself of the gold you held before each test? When you view a stack of items in your inventory, only the stolen status of one particular item is shown, and I have not seen a pattern to which (other than that it isn't necessarily the most recently acquired)
Iszi replied that he hadn’t and Ben responded:
If that's the case, I have not found it to be reliable. I have seen, when selling a single large stack containing stolen items to a fence, the "STOLEN" tag toggle on and off multiple times
Because of the sorting of gold in your inventory, you can’t easily check if you are carrying tagged coins by just looking for the “Stolen” tag. The following comment greatly helps with testing.
I also have gold in my inventory flagged as Stolen. Easiest way to check how much is flagged Stolen is to punch a guard in Whiterun, then lower your fists and pay the fine. He'll take 40g plus all your Stolen gold. Subtract the gold you have left from the gold you had before, minus the fine.
I haven’t got my PC up and running yet, but a comment like the following makes me want to dig in.
additem 0000000F 10
this command adds 10 gold to the current console target
there's a fourth parameter (numbers are accepted) called "flags", but I don't seem able to flip the stolen tag with it
setownership
clearownership
these two commands assign ownership of items (and containers) to you and off of you
I added 10 gold to a container that I didn't own (gold appeared in red text in container). Then took the gold (no stolen tag in inventory).
I can see the gold as an item in my inventory two ways... 1. by looking into a container. 2. by the showinventory command (doesn't show stolen tags).
so far, I haven't found a console command to flip stolen-ness. only ownership (which is a little different).
I also haven't found a way to drop gold on the ground to mess with it there.
open to more ideas for testing
I have my own play testing that shows this “Stolen” gold also tracks “WHO’ the gold was stolen from. I believe this may be normal for all stolen items but causes us trouble when trying to bug test for “Stolen” gold. I’m curious if tracking who stolen from has something to do with that fourth parameter?

They didn’t find an answer, but because Iszi asked the question, I believe I benefited and wanted to share my appreciation.

You can find the discussion by searching for the following:

“Stolen” Gold? - Cause closed!

Posted: Wed Mar 11, 2026 3:10 am

  • The first post shows a confirmed way to “cause” the stolen tag to appear.
  • The second post shows a confirmed way the Stolen tag can be “hidden” through sort order.
Because “sort order” can prevent someone from seeing the “Stolen tag, even on loose coins immediately stolen, this behavior explains the contradictory reporting in the past which prevented confirmation.

This does not confirm it is the “ONLY” cause, but “multiple causes” is only a “potential” and lacks any confirmation. It should be mentioned because there are confirmed ways that non stolen items can become marked with the “Stolen” tag. (Asking a follower to “Take All” from a container.)

There are other things that can be explored:
  • How are stolen items linked to the individual they were stolen from.
  • Explain how the sort order changes?
However related and helpful to understand, they are not necessary to confirm and explain:
Gold that is stolen as individual coins will cause those particular coins to be marked with the “stolen” tag.
AND
When viewing a stack of items, the “Stolen” tag only means “at least one” of the items is stolen, not necessarily “all” the items are stolen. Conversly; not seeing the stolen tag does not mean “none” of the items are stolen.

Although It would be helpful to have some experiment that can demonstrate this sorting effect.

Another thought:

I suspect that a big part of why gold is treated differently from other items in this game is because you can have so much of it. You can have over 100,000 gold in your posession, but it's not likely (or even possible?) you'll have more than 1000 of any other specific item. For computing/RAM efficiency, it's probably a bad idea for the game to track a list (or array) 100,000 items long containing the individual status of each piece of gold. It's also probably why you can't drop gold on the floor--tracking the location for each piece of gold could get out of hand.

Now... I wonder if you only have a small amount of gold, maybe the game switches to a piece-by-piece list like it does for other items. No idea what the threshhold might be. If you have less than 10 gold, maybe the game tracks individual stolen status, but when you have over 1000, it doesn't.

P.S. Should I consider this the general "stolen tags in skyrim" thread, or would you prefer I leave this thread to be the "stolen gold" thread, and start another to discuss the stolen tag for other items?

“Stolen” thread?

You are certainly welcome to do what you think best. My intention was to specifically aim at the stolen tag inconsistency. But at the same time that involves many game mechanics. So I would decide your goal. Would a new thread and new title draw more attention to that goal and maybe draw better response from others? Would it better serve your goals to keep exploring that here because the stolen tags certainly apply to gold? So there probably isn’t a wrong answer.

EDIT- later the same day
I believe your analogy of a database is helpful to understanding Skyrim. It’s not one, but a large number under one roof. Each Hold for outdoor items, each door you open to houses, caves, basements, etc. Each container you enter pauses the game and only deals with what is inside. I have recently found it helpful to think of NPCs and my character as containers. My point is, this is much easier to keep track of millions of items by only dealing with small amounts at a time and simply transferring from one to another.

I have a character that is carrying over 1 million gold and seems to still track stolen coins. If you think of any tests that might be helpful, I’m willing to see what happens.

My current theory is that gold is handled as two different things. The first is gold that is individual coins treated like all other “items”, and 2nd is the gold in containers and as pouches that are never marked. Then the gold “items” are calculated with normal gold for your total gold. -just a theory.

Befriending an NPC’s will affect Stolen tag

I was originally searching for basic info on how Stolen tags work on normal items to help explain the odd sorting effect we see with Gold. But I believe befriending NPC’s puts some interesting light on ALL stolen items.

Normal Behavior: (defined as consistent behavior for majority of situations.)
  • Stealing an item causes the “Stolen” tag to appear in inventory
  • If a single item in a stack of items is stolen, the entire stack will show the “Stolen tag”
    • If you drop the items as individual items, the moment you pick up one that indicates “Steal”, the inventory stack will show “Stolen” and remain showing regardless of stealing or taking other items.
    • The stolen item appears, at least analogous to, sorted to the top of the stack.
    • If your inventory shows a “Stolen” tag, the first item you drop, or eat, or use will be one tracked as stolen.
Aberrant Behavior: (defined as behavior not consistent with “Normal” behavior and may not be consistent with itself.)
This specifically applies to items modified as a result of befriending an NPC. This is when an Item previously was marked “Steal (item)” but has been changed to “Take (item)”. Taking these items causes behavior different to what is expected.
  • Stealing an item before befriending the NPC, can cause the stolen tag to be removed from your inventory.
    • This applies only to stealing items the NPC would later allow you to take.
    • Although the tag is gone, the tracking remains and the items may not appear available to barter and may be confiscated by guards as stolen property.
  • These modified items appear to retain whatever causes stolen items to be sorted to the top, yet no longer retain other properties of stolen items.
    • Modified items will compete for the top slot in a stack.
    • If you drop one stolen item and one modified item, the last item you pick up will determine whether or not the stack shows as stolen in your inventory.
      • Steal one item then take the modified item = stack has no tag
      • Take the modified item then Steal the second = stack shows “Stolen”
      • Pick a growing cabbage = no tag; then steal a cabbage = “Stolen”; then pick another cabbage = still “Stolen; Finally take a modified cabbage = no tag.
  • Modified items may disappear or suddenly stop sorting to the top while moving in and out of containers or inventories.
Normal gold behavior is to not carry any traits like other stolen items other than to be viewed as crimes if witnessed while stealing.
Loose gold coins are aberrant as they behave like other stolen items. Also most of the loose gold coins are items that can become modified. It’s no wonder getting verifiable information has been nearly impossible for more than a decade

Miscellaneous Observations

Every once in a while I find an item that “looks” like individual coins, but is actually a single item that contains Gold. when approaching it states; “Take Gold”, but taking will take all at once. Currently found at a Shrine of Arkay at https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Shrines#Windhelm_Hills. The gold is sometimes a pouch and sometimes this 3 coin image. This is called “Pile of Gold” at https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Gold, but does not yet mention this location.

During my current game I discovered that all 250 of my Steel Arrows are marked as “Stolen”. (All will be confiscated by a guard and placed in evidence.) Never felt like I just forgot. I recently found a post on another site describing the same phenomenon with Steel Arrows. They were on XBOX 360 LE, mine is PS4 AE.

Hah... my game playthrough has a mess of don't-know-why-it's-marked-stolen items. I've been playing a primarily lawful character (I joined the thieves guild, and did the first two quests just so I could get access, but that's about it).

A few weeks ago, when I was still rather new to the game, I was taken by surprise when looking through a chest in my house I was storing items (armor, IIRC) in, and it was unexpectedly half-full of red items. Up to that point I had not noticed that stolen items you are carrying have a relatively (compared to the prominent all-red for an item in a container) subtle "stolen" tag on them. I haven't stolen any armor (to my knowledge ?) and I didn't see (or didn't notice) any "stolen" tag on any of the items before putting them in the chest. It felt rather like the game was gaslighting me.

Now, at some point I got the idea that, when exiting a dungeon over-loaded with loot, I should stash my excess stuff in a container close to the entrance of the dungeon to get my load down to fast-travel levels, and then take it home in two or more trips. Apparently, that's a bad idea, because the container may "belong" to someone, and then the item I placed in it may end up "belonging" to that someone. Apparently, just dropping excess items on the ground is a safer idea -- random scavengers snagging your stuff doesn't seem to be a problem in Skyrim.

Because of the subtle-ness of the "stolen" tag on items you're carrying, I've never noticed the transition point between "not stolen" and "stolen".

Random example items that I've had marked stolen:
  • various ores and ingots
  • one grain (/ear?) of wheat
  • a few pieces of chaurus chitin
?!?!

If I wanted to steal chaurus chitin, I'd have a hard time doing it. Are there even any merchants that stock it? I'd pretty much have to give/sell it to someone in order to make it available to steal.

I’m curious if your house is one of those you build yourself? I recently saw a couple of posts complaining they caused their items to be marked “Stolen”. I don’t remember that happening to me, but thought I’d put it out there.

Oh, I wouldn't call it my analogy. When I brought up database programming, it was just because I've seen a lot of sorting errors as a database programmer. It hadn't occurred to me to use databases as an analogy for anything in the game.

It is possible that Skyrim is using an actual database as part of the game--SQLite is a database that was designed to be embedded in other apps -- but it seems unlikely to me.

Nah, both in real life and in the game, I'm a city boy. I want to be able to walk to the market. In the context of the game, I want to be able to walk to the market while heavily overloaded with stuff to sell. When I (briefly) looked at it, it appeared to me that all the building sites in Skyrim were located kind of distant from any city or village.

I have my PC up and running Skyrim SE and I’ve begun to dip my toes into console commands. In an earlier post I referenced a quote that “additem” had a 4th parameter of which its function was unknown. I speculated that it might have to do with ownership and “Stolen”. I recently found the console section of the wiki. No new information but great minds think alike.
additem <item ID> <count> <flag (optional)>
…
The effects of <flag> are unknown, but it probably refers to ownership and stolen status.
So, there may be things you can to which I’m not yet aware. Looking through the list of commands gave me a lot of ideas to try. I discovered that I can look at items in my inventory but I can’t look inside a stack of items. The inventory will give me the items base ID but then give a counting of how many are in the stack, even though they have individual reference ID’s. But I can sort of pseudo-verify some sorting information. At least it’s my working theory. The individual item that determines if you see the Stolen tag is what gets used if you drop an item. If I drop items, record their RefID’s then pick them up and drop them again; I can begin testing what effect different actions have on the order. Or I’ll find it to be completely random. But then that will be more than I “know” today. Any suggestions on what ways to test, or things you might be curious to test? When I get some time, I’ll try to dig in.
