Gosh, that would explain why Martin's voice acting is so good! Compared to all the rest, even despite quite poor dialogues he got... Yes, he's the essential character of the main quest, and gets much more parts than Patrick Steward

And IMHO plays them better.
I just wish they put someone better instead of Jauffre, his voice acting sucks so bad...
============WARNING============
==FROM NOW ON THIS THREAD CONTAINS BIGASS SPOILERS==
==DON'T READ IF YOU DIDN'T FINISH THE MAIN QUEST==
(yeah, a later edit because the way this thread develops makes containing the spoilers increasingly difficult)
I really felt for him in the end... like, you're the champion of the cyrodiil, you get the cuirass of the champion, only 5 people in the history, emperors, tamriel is saved, blah, blah, blah... shut up [&@%!], Martin is dead. Stuff that cuirass up your ass, just look. He never wanted any of this emperor business, he never got anything from it. Childhood without father on some farm, then nobody to guide him through the youth, here such people take drugs, there they conjure daedra. But results are similar. When everything began crashing, he became a priest, meekly serving people and wants to live the rest of his life peacefully, never hurting anyone. But then the daedra burn his city and he saves but a handful of people. And then you come, great hero of Kvatch, saying all the rest got killed because of him. Really smooth, [&@%!]. No wonder he's [&@%!] and tells you to save the rest if you want anything from him. He hates the whole "lost heir, savior of Tamriel" part but he knows the world is doomed without him, so he agrees. Then keeps doing what he's told by that [&@%!], Jauffre, who first left him on some farm, then did nothing to help him, to know his father is alive, and now plays a great friend, "You must do it for us all"... Martin going to the battle at the Great Gate seems to be his response to Jaufree's approach. Everyone is pushing him, demanding, ordering. You seem to have realized how much it sucks so you just do your part, glad that you can stay far away from the mess at Cloud Ruler's Temple and don't contribute any more to the stress. But Jauffre, the Countess, Burd, even Braurus hanging over Martin all the time... poor guy. Finally he has enough of it, and goes for the battle, He's really tired. He really wants this to end. Most likely he decided "screw Tamriel, if Tamriel consists of such [&@%!], I want to die and you [&@%!] will die with me."
But against the odds, or rather thanks to essential NPC flag, he survives and you show up with the sigil stone while all the others are dead. Two survivirs clapping hands over field of corpses, goddamn pathetic. "Let's get this over with, take me to the Imperial City." At least Ocato is not an [&@%!]... but Martin feels awfully guilty for those people at the Great Gate. And still wants himself dead, but only after closing the gates to Oblivion. Mehrunes Dagon appears at the most convenient moment - no need to light the dragonfires, to serve as an emperor, to breed heirs. Seal the gates and get yourself killed in the process... He gladly tackles the opportunity.
And you're left to ponder his fate.

Tell you why Sean Bean is so good. He is the only person who pronounces "Daedra" correctly. All the stupid americans (no offence to americans here

) just say "Deedra" and it [&@%!] me off.

Guys, it's not that they tell him to go, fight. He's just so [&@%!] with them that he goes there, hoping the daedra will kill him (and them all). It's not a "stupid decision", it's a concealed decision about commiting a suicide.

Vook: why are you so sure it's suicide? I personally feel he actually wanted to save Tamriel. There's never any evidence of anyone hating him. If he has any sense, he'll know why Jauffre didn't give him much attention (keep him secret, keep him safe)<---hehe. I think he was doing what he thought was his duty to the people of tamriel. If he could've slain Mehrunes without dying himself, he would have obviously known that ending a long line of emperors isn't the best move, and would have done that instead.

Yes, he did. That's why he didn't tell you to go to hell (and never return) in Kvatch. But he had serious doubts at times. And was definitely tired of his own life.
There's never any evidence of anyone hating him. If he has any sense, he'll know why Jauffre didn't give him much attention (keep him secret, keep him safe)<---hehe.
Hating him? Why? Yes, exactly, keep him secret, keep him safe. A very useful tool. Not a person, not someone with feelings, with dreams, ideas, with own life. Just a very precious item. Everyone was treating him as a tool of closing the gates, nobody really thought of him as a friend. No hate of course, Jauffre could just as well hate the amulet of kings or the dragonfire candles in the temple - would make no sense. You don't hate things. But Martin was really tired of being a thing in hands of these at power. For Uriel Septim he wasn't SON, he was a HEIR. Accidential unwanted but potentially useful byproduct of some love affair.
If he could've slain Mehrunes without dying himself, he would have obviously known that ending a long line of emperors isn't the best move, and would have done that instead.
Mehrunes Dagon was a daedric prince. With deeper knowledge of the Dragon Blood than Martin. He HAD to know that if Akatosh Avatar ever stands in his way, there's no way he could win.
So imagine this scenario:
You and Martin arrive at the temple. Martin stands there, rising the amulet and shouts "Mehrunes Dagon, Prince Of Destruction!"
Mehrunes turns to him to smash him, but stops seeing the risen amulet...
"Go back to your plane of Oblivion or I, Martin Septim, dragonborn break the amulet!"
Mehrunes curiously lowers head. "The lost heir? here? But you KNOW breaking the amulet will kill you", he says with a devilish grin.
"And what choice do I have? Be killed by you?" - Martin readies to smash the amulet.
"Wait! Wait!" true panic in Dagoth's eyes, tiny by comparison Martin dominates him. "What do you want? We can... share the power?"
"Yes. You rule your wretched plane of Oblivion. I rule the plane of Tamriel."
"You mean I return to my exile? And what if I disagree?"
"Then I smash the amulet. I won't allow you to rule Tamriel as long as I live."
"As long as you live... mortal..." - Mehrunes seems tempted by the offer.
"As long as I and my heirs live..."
"And your heirs..." - not quite as happy Mehrunes' voice. "So you don't break the amulet... The barrier between Tamriel and Oblivion never permanently closed. I return to my exile. I wait till the dynasty line of Septims is broken again. Then..."
"Then I'll be long dead. I'll let my heirs worry about what then. Now go."
"As you wish, mortal. For now."
And Mehrunes Dagon returns to his plane of Oblivion, and Martin proceeds with relighting the Dragonfires. And rules the Tamriel as emperor to the end of his days. And has many. many heirs.

loool interesting ending! But I think you are forgetting that you can't sit down and reason with crazed bad guys.

If he's a daedric prince, there's more to his power than being 8 floors tall and swinging a matching axe. He had enough skill to write Mysterium Xarxes, a book that can create a pocket universe with a cute island inside. Sure a bit of old-fashioned mashing and bashing is in order and fun, but don't underestimate intelligence and wisdom of Mehrunes Dagon. And surely he'd prefer to wait another 1000 years for next opportunity than to get sealed in Oblivion forever without -any- chance to get out -ever-. Of course there is a chance he wouldn't notice or recognize Martin, take the swing and then all that's left for Martin would be to break the amulet before getting mashed to pulp. But if he only got a chance to give a thought to the situation, he'd nicely surrender.
It was Martin who decided he won't pact with Mehrunes. No more emperors, no more empire, no intrigues, hiding heirs, killing unborn competitors to the trone (Barenziah's first unborn...) and above all no more risk of invasion from Oblivion.
And still he could have made the pact with Mehrunes and then betray him, wait with breaking the Amulet till his last hour of life, after years of being the emperor. But he hated the idea to be emperor. Save Tamriel while killing yourself. That's why he broke the amulet then and there.
Plus the other ending would way too much encourage a hentai style sequel

I like Vook's ending. It's more positive and it opens possibilities for more adventures. Expansions where we can follow and take part of the destinies of Martin's heirs and the future of Tamriel.

Actually, as an American I do take offence to that. I pronounce it properly as I believe it's said as D-aaaaaahhhhh!-dra. A good number of people, including our President, cannot speak correct English. Look at the popular music. They speak ghetto English. It's not "Americas" fault that a good number of people in the United States are illiterate and wouldn't pronouce it correctly even if you did sound it out for them. It's stubborn ignorance. The decline of Western Civilization is at hand. Mark my words.

But if the Empire collapses and the provinces all rebel, it leaves uncountable opportunities for plots. Could even make a good strategy game, lead your (chosen) province first to independence, fighting the crumbling Empire in alliance with other provinces, then the pacts break one after another and each province tries to rebuild the empire with itself as the head of the empire
Or you take part of Ocato (assuming he survived) or the new chauncellor and try to keep the empire from collapsing without using force - actually it would make an incredible completely new genre of game - a game of diplomacy, where your speechcraft, personality and charm would mean much more than the army - the empire weakened by the invasion has barely enough troops to keep one province in check, not a shade of chance to keep all of them by military power alone - you'd really have to keep the peace by means of very fragile diplomacy. You visit cities and leaders, learn weaknesses of opponents, play them against each other, create several "cold wars" between provinces hostile to each other, drastically lower the taxes to remove primary incentive for rebellion...
And of course like in previous cases, there's a champion, a great hero to save the Empire... except that's not you

You give the guy some help, you save him from prison after he joins the Dark Brotherhood and botches a hit, you shout at him to get back to saving Tamriel when he goes investigating reasons of rat deaths in some old lady's cellar instead, or straight opposite, tell him to get more training before taking up the next task...
But that kind of game is too "risky" for a big company like Bethesda. Sorry, but current landscape of gaming doesn't allow for new genres to be made by big publishers. Bethesda will play it safe and likely the new game will be another RPG even more dumbed down and closer to Diablo'ish hack&slash than Oblivion. Unless something happens with the market.

Interesting ideas, but they sound more like a strategy game than a fantasy RGP. However, I'd like the possibility to add professions to classes like e.g. shopowner, innkeeper, carpenter and others. I'd like to interact more with the NPC's, but I guess that's hard to do development-wise.

Not harder than all these shaders, detail, Havok etc. Yep, something like Strategy except in Strategy you win by military means. Here the twist is that by military means you could only lose.

They could recycle most of the display engine and quite a few locations (courts, cities, temples) and replace the freedom of travelling everywhere with freedom to really lead an interesting conversation with NPCs. Like, you can only fast-travel to specific places (escort and stuff), no dungeon crawling, no herb picking, just pure politics.
And of course it STILL could be interesting. First off, you're not a heavyweight fighter, you're a cunning politician, so if some assassins appear in your bedroom, you run for your life! You check well if your wine is not poisoned. You sneak through secret passages for a face-to-face talk and pact with a leader of a rebellion while promising to kill him in public, you give a speech to the people, care what you say and keep an eye for hidden snipers... and if a highwayman demands 100 gold, by the nine, you pay!

Nope. The book would suck. I refuse to write sucky books.
But writing a major "sequel" mod to Oblivion, where you do all of the above - never leave city walls (clicking the gate activates fast travel menu)... with enough willing to help... why not?
