The days seem so much more quiet now, time itself wanting nothing more than to savor every precious second, like a life well lived. The candle light flickered as she parted from her seat followed by the soft creak of wood as she walked away from her desk. In the soft glow she could see her study and the shelves of books and tomes alike, till she stopped just near where there was a gap just fit for a single volume. "Back you go now.." a soft voice said as she slid a book into the space, the cover reading as The Void Nights
But as if from the very back of her tired mind, she heard a threaded string as if some unseen hand had pulled it taunt, before suddenly crashing to reality. A book had somehow fallen from her shelf and landed upon the dark floor. "Oh dear, why you gone and done that now" The old Altmer reached down to pick it up, dusting it off as she brought it into the warm glow of light "Now what do we have here.. Tamrielic.." her hand settled lovingly on the cover, as a wave of nostalgia washed over her. "My.. how could I forget you?" A lone tear strolled down her aged face, Niralie could not help but smile. Tamrielic Adventures, the very name etched on its leather cover.
Still holding the book against her chest, Niralie made her way out from her study and into the darkened halls of her residence with but only a candle keeping the night at bay. Entering her bedroom, she gently placed the candle on her bedside table, taking one last chance to look fondly at this record of the past. She sat down upon her bed, thinking back how well the lives of her old companions must have been. Valentia, Eolwyn, Grelok, Nora, even Arellius and so forth. How she wished to maybe have one that chat with them all, but alas she was always to outlast them. She brushed the cover of the book one more time before setting it too on the bedside table. "Maybe tomorrow we could catch up okay?"
Slowly she nestled herself into bed, her eyelids grew heavy as the candle struggled to stay alit. "Tomorrow, surely" she thought, and as her mind continued to drift, the shadows around her gaze seemed to crept ever more, like sleep beckoned her ever more. There was something she swore she was forgetting.. someone important.. someone like... And there it was again, that peculiar sound of a thread, and.. and, she could have sworn she just saw Dorian now, by the foot of her bed. Was that who she was forgetting? The image of him seemed to smile back at her, her drifting away seemed so inevitable. But this image.. Dorian.. seemed off. As darkness loomed more and more around the borders of her mind, he seemed to fade into a black ink, replaced only a robed man with a book. But she couldnt care as she drifted ever further away, the last thing she could see was the warm candle glow snuffed by the night
"Forgive me.. I promise to make everything right.. I promise" his words echoed through her thoughts, cast in moonlight
Then slowly, something stirred her, the soft rustle of a wagon's wheels and the smell of dry hay. In a waking lull Niralie stared out the back of a wagon, warm sunlight shining down as the dark corners of her mind washed away. A field of green as an imperial road loomed over the hills and ever more. She must have dosed off during her travels. Her hand still rested on a book, something Tia had written about their adventures some years ago. But she could have sworn that.. but all she could recall was was this passing dream she had, and a promise from someone. It felt like..
As she stirred behind the wagon, she looked across to the couch, an elderly bosmer held the reigns to the steeds "Ah, awake now? Good, we're not much farther from Chorrol now ya'hear?" She nodded her head back, no need to trouble herself too much. Just as well to enjoy the warm sun and the passing country side.
Its been five years since that day, and as the sun rises to its peak this summer's evening, a new journey readies to begin anew
