remove adware from debian (stretch)?

Long story short I accidentally downloaded adware, I was tricked by the oldest trick in the book. Anyway..
So I'm 99% sure I downloaded adware separately (clicked the 'download here' button) and it didn't come bundled with a rom. I open my browser and 50% of the time 2 identical adds will pop up about alleviating lip wrinkles or wharever. Not sure when it (adware downloading) happened exactly but was either this week or last, I can find out.
I'd like to remove this manually so that I learn a bit more about my pc, linux/debian, etc. So what do you think? Where should I start.
