Daggerfall freezes when getting temple quests

I've searched around and have found similar crash glitches, but none under these specific circumstances. I joined the Temple of Stendarr and am trying to do a few quick quests for them to build up my experience. However, I've found that after the quest giver heals you, the game will lock up 50% of the time, forcing me to hit Ctrl+F10 and manually close DOSBox to get out of the game.
At first I thought it was due to the quest fix mods I installed, but I haven't found any evidence that they cause new crashes where there were none before. Then I thought it was due to running out of memory, but even when I took the "objmemsize 9000" line out of my Z.CFG, it still happened. I know some glitches, like the movement keys not working, can occur if you set your DOSBox cycles to "auto" or "max" so I set it to "auto limit 50000" which seems stable enough for everything else, but the freeze still happens.
The only way I've found to get around this is pure random chance, by reloading my game, talking to the quest giver again, and hoping he gives me a quest that doesn't immediately lock up the game. Does anyone have any advice for this?
ETA: I suppose I should mention. The first quest I took for the temple was "The Heretic" where I had to investigate the false prophet. Since my reputation with the lover's faction was zero (this was a new game) and I had exhausted all other options, including exploring the dungeon, I decided to wait for the quest to advance on its own. According to the wiki, a courier is supposed to deliver a message within 21 days. To pass the time I did some traveling, as part of the main quest, but the courier never came. I ended up failing the quest without realizing it. However, when I spoke to the quest giver at the Temple of Stendarr, he didn't inform me that I had failed the quest, he just gave me a new quest. Failing the quest did still impact my reputation, as the priest at the door (the guy who takes donations) rebuffed me when I tried to talk to him. I had to donate 2000 gp to raise my reputation before he would talk to me again.
The first crash came immediately after I talked to the quest giver after failing that quest. I didn't like the quest he gave me, so I reloaded my save and tried to get a different one, and that's when the game locked up.
