UESP: Secret Histories!

We had a thread for sharing old stories about the site a while back, well it became about that, but it wasn't originally about that. This thread is solely about sharing some interesting tidbits about the site and its histories.

Interesting fact, when I was asked to join the moderator team, I demanded a concession of a special rank on the grounds that I'm special. The original version of the "AKB coins", as I refer to them, would have actually been a dual set of coins, one blue, one pink. While never used, we still have them sitting around:

Ultimately we settled on the famous "cotton candy" coins:

This created the issue of me ALWAYS needing a unique rank, though. So whenever we do any site event, specific effort has to be put into creating special ranks for me. For example, the "AKBro" rank:

Image

or the "This Isn't Even My Final Form" coins when I was also the winner of the COTM:

Image

or the "AKB Fallout" coins:

Which is my favorite? The "UESP Shield" of course:

So in this thread, share some of your favorite stories of your time on the site!

The time Skyrim broke the site. Release was hell, we received thousands of edits and so much traffic that the server providers cut us off. Trying to hold the namespace to any sort of standard of quality was impossible. Pretty crazy.

Also check out these sick blue crowns. Courtesy of Musicman I believe.

May I ask: Who drew in the most tips?

As far as I recall, the bandwidth limit was just an invisible fair use mechanism or something. It wasn't supposed to be in place, so once the issue was identified it was an easy fix.

What's the story behind those super sweet google like maps we have for Morrowind, Oblivion & Skyrim with all the locations and links to their wiki articles when you click on them? Because that's the most useful resource a person could hope to find for playing Morrowind and the person/people who made it did a great job.

In some RP Subforum history, I planned out basically all of Hircine's Hunt in an after school study thing I did where I'd do my homework and not study, it's also where I made SEPIA which was SPECIAL without Charisma or Luck. I added Luck back in and went on to use it in most RPs I've ran, other people have used it too. It was terribly balanced, it was where I should have learnt the lesson paralyze is a ridiculously overpowered ability but didn't. I think I did learn invisibility is overpowered.

Not really sure, but there's an ancient Java map for Morrowind on the old site so I imagine the Google API versions are pretty old. The Skyrim map was apparently very challenging to set up and was only available in monochrome for ages. I think the Dragonborn map has still yet to be updated.

Looking at how things are now it might be difficult for newer members to imagine that this forum as a community, used to host a lot of drama a few years ago. The reasons for the various instances of such varied greatly in actual, objective importance, as well as in each conflict's rage:rationality ratio. Most of these intra-communal conflicts were based on one question: "How should these forums be run?" Answers were, of course, all over the place. A fair amount of old-timers wanted a prime emphasis on formal tone and etiquette, with the forums not changing in their role as a utility meant for asking and answering questions about the games, discussing them, and everything else that happens in the main subforums. Casual chatting wasn't seen as a desirable commodity, instead there was a favor for the old-school forum community feeling of recognizing frequent posters and including whatever private comments there were in productive posts. The moderates were there, and their stance ought to be obvious. There were also people who at some point or another had become so attached to the forum community that their main activity was to talk; much as we do now in the General subforums. To cut this lengthy explanation of the obvious short: the past five years were chock-full of these differing ideas colliding whenever things changed in some way, be it a major rule change like the addition of the optional word censor, or the emerging of forum fads.

The history I'm here to talk about, was one of the latter, if not the forum fad to rule them all (and in the darkness guide them; until they caused so many internet fights they were forbidden.) It was...The Coloured Posts Movement.

What may sound like a headline from a backwater town's local newspaper about their spray-painted road-signs mysteriously changing position every now and again due to "as of yet undetermined reasons", which are probably just the occasional grandpa who insists he can drive even though he's got the eyesight of a mole by now, was actually an open group for users of the UESP forums to join. The CPM as it was often abbreviated to, was created on March the 22nd, 2011, by a user then known as 'mars'. This username has since vanished from official UESP records, but more on that later. The idea to create this group had grown to bloom due to certain cliques of very cool, attractive forum members having previously formed social ties, and displaying their loyalties with such names as 'The Brotherhood' and 'The Pokèsquad'. mars has stated in an interview with yours truly, that at the time she felt socially intimidated by these organizations, and frequently saw herself unable to match their cunning wit and crafty in-jokes. Wanting to establish herself, and make her name known, she took the capitalist approach: sensationalize something, and engineer a demand where there had previously been none.

If she herself lacked individuality, surely so did other people. Thus, she suggested that her habit of coating all of her text in a lush shade of purple, be taken up by other forumites, as a way of leaving a lasting impression whenever they posted, without having to think of a witty signature, or somehow obtain the rights to join one of the elite clans of idol-members. Obviously people loved it and chose a wide range of absurd colors, taking delight in finally feeling special.

As mentioned before, the traditionalist corner of the room, was not pleased. At all. To their eyes, all those colors were confounding, confusing, childish, and other comparable adjectives starting with a C. Before long, there was hot debate as to whether it should even be tolerated at all, with both sides taking the matter very personally. The older generation felt their sacred retreat invaded and disfigured, the newcomers unwelcome and mocked. Eventually, the conflict, like all such conflicts, just got old and everybody stopped. mars, who was now known formally as 'Mars', took the bitter pill and stated that she no longer felt joy in giving her words a color coating, stepping down and disbanding the movement. Somehow, all that was still a big deal to a lot of people.

A few loyalists remain even today, still dutifully keeping their words colorful, and the spirit of individualism, fighting the system, throwing molotovs and drinking cheap beer afterwards alive. Mars, who would later come to be known as MARS, went on to greener pastures, creating yet another forum entity that sparked both great joy, and grave controversy. The legendary roleplay, Tamrielic Adventures. But that is for the next installment of UESP Histories, and for now, I leave you with this. A glimpse into the past:

So, chief, what kinda things do I need to do to get a set of those shields? I think I'm special enough to deserve shields for no reason other than I like them.

I honestly think the Colored Posts Movement may have been one of the catalysts for that rift between us new users and the older crow developing. Obviously there were other reasons, but the CPM is the earliest exhibition for the disdain of newer users being openly expressed.

Alright children, here's the story of something that was really cool for about a week, before it was promptly forbidden. "What could this thing be?" You might be asking. Well, it's simple, graffiti signatures. Once upon a time in the land of UESP, all was good. Until someone, who has been lost to the sands of time, found a cool website that allowed you to create a wall in your signature, and other users could click on it and add something funny to it. Some mysterious and clever phantom put Zoidbergs all over them... (V) (;,,;) (V), others spammed them by writing "ZeRoc" all over them. (Dang it AKB...) Others decided to take less pleasant routes, spamming them is profanity or other crude things that weren't appropriate for the forums. This became a headache for the mods, as anyone can edit them, anonymously. The end result was an immediate ban on them all. We had 3 days to remove them, or the mods would remove them in exchange for a warning. This was truly a scary time for us all, especially me, since the mods were much more serious than I had ever seen them at that point. I'd post a link to the site they came from, but I don't want to get a warning, and also because that site doesn't seem to work anymore.

Anyone want to mention the Chicken thread? No? Good idea, now that was a crap-fest.

To be honest, the ZeRoc thing was me initially, but it REALLY took off.

Random fact:

MARS joined the forums on January 23, 2011.
AKB joined the forums on January 24, 2011.

Coincidence? Yes, quite entirely.
