Came back to share this from IGN.
If this turns out to be true I quit everything. (unless of course they announce a new ES to go with it)

I'd say it's a port more than a remaster. PC already got the "next gen" HD textures years ago as a free DLC, and Bethesda have previously said that they ran Skyrim on an xbone while developing Fallout 4. Since people are still playing the game on PC, it makes sense for them to port it to modern consoles. They also probably want to introduce their new console modding system to the game.

If it is an actual remaster and they want us to cash out €50 for the same game, I'm gonna be [&@%!] - not least because it ought to be Oblivion or Morrowind getting that treatment. But I highly doubt they'd do that.

Oblivion and Morrowind would need remakes not remastering. Especially Morrowind.

Bethesda has stated before they don't like the idea of remaking their own games, on the grounds of it being time consuming. And that's why a Morrowind or Oblivion remake won't happen (anytime soon, I would say). Skyrim MAY happen on account of it not being true remake, it would be a lot less work to get Skyrim pretty again and just sell it to PS4 and XBONE users for an extra few bucks.

You can find Morroblivion, Skywind, and Skyblivion here.

Yes, I know about those. This is about making these games available on current-gen consoles, however. And it would of course be officially released by Bethesda, not mod teams.

They wouldn't waste the effort of even a port job if they're busy with the next title. This is a total crock.

There's no indication that they're working on TESVI though. They only started serious work on Fallout 4 after finishing Dragonborn, so I imagine they're currently focused on Fallout DLC.

I think it's possible.

Doom3: BFG Edition upgraded Doom3 to the 360 and PS3 as a budget title.

My only concern would be that they decide to 'improve' Skyrim by altering the way the game plays and inadvertently break the whole thing.

- I found the BFG Edition to be largely unplayable due to someone's brilliant idea to hard-code Sprint onto the left analog stick 'click'. "id has fine-tuned the controls to bring the intensity of the DOOM single and multiplayer experience to the consoles" Bleurgh. Doom3: Arthritis Edition more like. :x

Really, really hope they don't do anything like that...

Unlike with Doom 3, with was a practically ancient game to begin with, Skyrim only came out a half-decade ago. Sure, it was in the back-third of the lifecycle of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, but it's still a relatively new game.

I don't see the reason behind remastering Doom 3, aside from as a cheap cash-grab ahead of rebooting the franchise, but still... Id needed something as a taster to get the masses going again on Doom, which has for the last decade(?) been not actively advertised and given releases to.

What reason would exist for rebooting Skyrim though? TES VI wouldn't be a reboot of the series, and upgrading a game that is fine enough to begin with a mere couple of years after it came out and when the Legendary Edition is still there and selling seems like more effort than what would be returned.

Because it can't be played on the current generation of consoles? And because they already have the HD textures and have internally ported the game to xbone already? That means minimal work needed to introduce the game to the current console market and the new Bethesda.net mod hosting and make $$$. I don't see what you're missing here.

Also with consoles there is a 'bigger picture' going on here.

I cannot be the only person in the world happy to stick with my 360 until all/most of my favourite games are playable on the XB1.

Obviously Skyrim is one of those games, and a decently-done re-master would be a factor in adopting the next-gen console. And as soon as I take the leap to an XB1 then Fallout 4, Doom and a couple of others will be insta-buys.

There is more $$$ at stake here than just one game.

Cheers :D

"Oooh, let's see: should we work on the next installment in our TES series, or do we go back to the title-before-last with ever-diminishing returns on our fanbase's nostalgia?

I used to make new video games like you. Then I took an arrow in the knee..."

Thank you, but No.

PS: [&@%!] No

Again, as legoless already said, Bethesda still has Fallout 4 dlc to work on, which probably requires a bit more work than applying the HD Texture pack to the PC version of Skyrim and porting it.

[&@%!] Fallout 4, yous. They're gonna sink if they realize they're dog-paddling in their own sweat and urine within stagnant waters.

Well, they always wanted to have Skyrim mods on console, and now it's finally possible. If that's all their doing then it's pretty benevolent - helping their modding community, five years after release. My problem would be if it's a true remaster with a PC re-release, which would definitely be a big waste of BGS's time.

When we see what's happening right now with Fallout and the whole console mod and theft thing, I'm not sure I'm really fond of the idea of seeing Skyrim mods on console. Especially when there's so much outdated and unstable mods.

I highly doubt Bethesda will go bankrupt continuing to focus on Fallout 4 or one of their most successful games to date.

Imagine did just that. Now I'm not saying it's going to happen, or even that it is likely, and you could say, "But Bethesda is much bigger than Imagine", and I'd (to some extent) agree with you, but with consoles getting incremental upgrades we're rapidly approaching the "unprecedented" stage of events where guesses are just spit in the wind.

As for the remaster, it's (as mentioned before in this thread) basically a port of the PC version. Nothing to really get excited about, unless this generation of consoles is your first. It really is a brilliancy by the gaming industry though:1.If Skyrim was what was holding somebody back from modern gen, now they have a reason to switch. 2. Bethesda gets to re-release a game which they had already ported as a training exercise, with the added tagline "Now with mods" allowing them to "make bank" so to speak.
Hidden:
PS3 Player:I got Skyrim!
Xbone Player: I got the DLCs first!
PS4 Player:I got higher framerates, better textures, and mods!
PC Player:...welcome to 2011?

ooo The plot thickens.

Article linked in OP has been updated:

"UPDATE 2: Retail website Base.com has now listed "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - The Definitive Edition" on PS4 and Xbox One, with a release date of November 23, 2016.

If the listing is to be believed, the game will retail as a $60, £50 "full-price" title."

I would 100% shell out another $60 for a remaster. My 360 is basically dead and most of my library is ported over already. There's nothing that would stop me from spending more money on my favorite series. Even if it's the exact same game. If they just peeled the "360" off and put "One", guess what, I'll pay for it. Deserved to be a next gen game from the get go.

The only problem I see with this remaster is it is unlikely to have any extra bugs or problems fixed that the old versions still have to this date. Would the new console versions work with the Unofficial Patch mods? Those are pretty extensive mods, not simple little things, I'm not sure the prototype console modding system could handle them.

And if they do go about fixing the bugs officially, then why haven't they done so for the older versions? And will they do so?

They released with the Anthology series the broken un-patched version of Daggerfall that allegedly wasn't winnable in that state. IIRC, anyway.

If they do an HD remake, stupid as I think it would be to cash grab for the game, I bet they'd just tack on the HD textures that they released beside the game, then they'd say "Done", pay us another $50 for this game. I give it an even chance that they wouldn't bother fixing things they know are broken. They haven't for years when they knew there were still issues. Although they could change if SR is remastered, because they're making a cash grab with the re-release and all.

I don't have the PC version of Skyrim, but I do for MW and OB, and MW at least used an executable for the MW patch, though I think that was because it made engine changes. I don't know what the SR patch is, whether or not it's also an executable that needs under-the-hood access or if it's just an .esp fixing in-game bugs like script errors.

If the former, I doubt Microsoft would allow BethSoft to let executables be run on their system. Too much of a security risk. If it's just an Elder Scrolls Plugin file, then I suppose it could be installed to the game.
