Elder Scrolls Anthology: Oblivion issues

Hello,

I'm new here and I'm new to forums. Please let me know if I'm not following "etiquette" properly and how to change. I've played Oblivion on the 360 but I just can't stand the frustrations I've been having so I decided to get it on PC to add some mods that will help with enjoyment. I got the Anthology because it also comes with Morrowind and Skyrim. Oblivion keeps crashing right as I'm about to exit the prison during the tutorial and I'm not sure what to do. I think it might be due to having a quad core because I faced a similar problem trying to run Thief Gold on my laptop that was a dual core. I did download both the Nexus mod manager and the Oblivion mod manager.Any help would be appreciated as well as proper rules for posting.

Your processor shouldn't be the thing causing problems. Gonna need some more info before we can help you.

Have you installed any mods, yet?

Are you running on Windows 10?

What's your graphics card?

I don't have any mods yet as I can't seem to make it through the tutorial prison. The thing usually freezes on me or I lose all control and plow right in to the wall right after that large open area where you usually become overencumbered the first time if you've been picking up everything. According to canyourunit, it says I have everything to run the game but the graphics card is like in the 5th percentile which I assume means it's not very good. I'm still pretty new to computer mechanics in the first place. I've realized that learning how to mod games that I like is a good avenue for me to get more acquainted with pc's and help me overcome some of my frustrations when dealing with them. If I were to set up this pc as a dual boot Win xp and Win 7 would it be best to run the game under xp or 7? Would it help at all? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Yeah, already did that. According to driver finder or something I need to update the driver for the "standard SATA AHCI controller" but cant find where to do it. Could that be causing the issue? I also knowthat when you click on technical support at the first oblivion popup menu, and click Directx Diagnostic(I didn't realize that this is the same as entering dxdiag at the Run prompt), clicking all the tabs of the report says no issues, I wasn't sure if that applied just to Oblivion or not.

Have you tried running it as an administrator, and running it in compatibility mode?

I've been chatting on the Steam forums since the Steam version contains all the dlc besides SI and KOTR so I've installed and uninstalled both the Steam version and the disc version multiple times. Could this be causing a problem/ Now I can't even enter the game without a little notice popping up saying "Oblivion stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify me if a solution is found." Another menu popped up like this prior, when I was actually able to make it in to the tutorial dungeon that said "video hardware unrecognized. Video quality settings defaulted to medium quality".

The Steam version should be in a totally different directory so they shouldn't interact. The "defaulting to medium quality" message is normal, it occurs if Oblivion can't recognise your GPU (which is likely for a ten year old piece of software) and will reset your settings whenever you reinstall or muck with the INI file.

I'll try running as an administrator and in compatability mode. I keep seeing stuff mentioning the ini file but I don't see it myself when I look at the contents of the disc drive with the disc in. What's the deal with it? I did install the game using setup rather than oblivion launcher directly from file explorer, doing a fresh install since the readme said it was an option. I am using Windows 10 also but I've seen that some people are able to run it under Windows 10. Thanks for the help.

I forgot to mention this too, when I am playing from the beginning, when the emperor first sees you, it's almost like the game is running in a mild slow motion almost like the emperor and the jailors are teleporting instantaneously through their walking motions evry in game foot distancegoing through their walking motions rather than walking smoothly, the mouse kimd of does the same thing as does the camera when looking around. Almost like there are frames missing if you were watching a movie. This on medium setting, when it's on very low is doesn't do this slow thing as bad but I still detect it slightly.

Alright so I ran under native resolution as an administrator using win xp service pack 3 in compatability mode. Game starts great but slows down progressively. Usually takes about 5-7 minutes depending on how much stuff is going on. Slows way down when you start following with the emperor. I also moved the files to a Games folder rather than under program files. I'm thinking next I'll install it under a separate X drive that I think I may have been partitioned or something like that. I am curious though and I don't mind going through the trouble but will I be able to get this game to look better and play better than on the xbox 360 or will there always be [&@%!] going wrong?

The INI isn't on the disk, it gets installed. Oblivion on PC can run as well as or better than on 360, but from the sounds of it your hardware might not be compatible. If you've followed all those steps then it's not the game acting up.

I found the ini files, it's amazing how much stuff you can mess with. I'm sure it isn't the game acting up. I turned off vsync and that seems to help but the game still slows down and eventually stops kind of like an old clock winding down. When I open task manager to end the game, I see a lot of stuff running in the background but am not sure what I could turn off. I did notice that cpu usage ranges from 2-21%, memory usage is a steady 60 % with the game using 205.3 mb and total usage is 1.2 gb out of 2 gb. Disc usage seems to be at either 0% or 100%. Some guy on the nexus mods site told me to change 1 to 0 for "bsound enabled" which supposedly turns off sound effects, but I could still hear the sound effects when playing.
