NooB questions

First off, I've been playing D&D cRPG games since 1988, (have all of them.)
(Played PnP D&D prior to that.)
I recently purchased Morrowind GotY edition, out of boredom, and it was on sale.
It's the first non-D&D cRPG I've ever purchased, so I'm lost.

Things I've noticed:
1) I can run through tons of micro-quests, and stay at level 1, practically forever.
(I played one character for 3 days, and never leveled up once.)
2) I can find, rob, loot, kill, etc to my heart's content, sell everything, and train up, without doing a single quest.
(I've got one character at level 37, without doing any quests.)

Now for the questions:
1) What's the purpose of the game?
(It feels like a warehouse of micro-quests for multi-player.)
2) Is there a story buried in there somewhere?
(Each guild, house, etc. seems to have it's own thing going on.)
3) How do you use magicka during combat?
(My character's go into their casting stance, but won't cast a thing.)
4) Other than running, or reloading alot, how does one combat the assassins who always seem to be a couple levels above you, are better armored, and better equiped than you?
(I've tried using their equipment, but the next one is even better equiped.)
(And when I manage to get good equipment, and skills, I get attacked by two of them, or they paralyze me with their first strike.)
5) What's with all of the berserker animals?
(I've had rats, worms, fish, and a slew of other things that simply attack for no apparent reason.)
(And some seem to come out of nowhere, without any warning at all.)
6) When I tried lowering the diffculty level, everything attacked in wierd ways that managed to kill me even faster, why?
7) What kinds of defenses, spells, and enchantments am I missing?

The good parts:
1) I love the complexity and detail of the game.
2) The raising of skills through usage is fun.

Bad parts:
1) Odd combinations of skills, and lack of ability to increase some without deviating from your RPG character-build.
(IE: to increase strength quickly, your rogue or mage needs to have, or work on, the combat skills of spear, or medium/heavy armor.)
2) No explaination of the amount of magika required to cast a spell you are about to purchase, or any way to permanantly increase your magika so that you can cast it.

Ok First there are 3 main questlines, The first you learn about at the very beginning when youre told to deliver a package. The second is because of the assassins, all you need to do is talk to a guard and then head to ebonheart and talk to the guy he tells you to talk to.

As for the rest, thats the fun of morrowind. Its a true rpg where you play a character and do whatever the **** you feel like doing.

1. To do whatever you feel like doing.
2. Yes since you have the GOTY or all 3 expansions (or at least 2) there are 2 Main quests.
3. For magic you'll have to talk with someone else who uses the comp to play
4. You can fight the assassins or like i said you can get them to stop another way
5. The "berserker animals" are the wild animals and are your enemies. They do what they're supposed to do...
6. I have no idea...perhaps a glitch?
7. Well you need to choose a type of armor you want to use (heavy medium light) and then wear peices of that armor and level that armors specific skill area to gain defense. Weapons and armor wear out over time so repair it often or it wont work as good as it should.

Thank you!

That narrows things down quite a bit.

I'm down to:
1) How do I use magicka during combat?
2) What does the difficulty setting actually do?
3) How do I get through Vivec and Ebonheart, and find that guy, without getting completely confused, dazed, and lost, as I did the last three times?

2. It makes the game easier or harder respectively, I meant tuo must have a glitch with your game. (0 is normal 100 is hard -100 is easiest)

3. Ok you will enter by boat (from vivec) Head straight till you enter the walls of the fort (you cross a bridge). Once past the bridge take a left and then a right. At the end of the "hallway" take a right (its near a well) you will be in another court area with some stairs ahead of you (they start away from you though). Go up the stairs to the battlements and you should see a guy in silverish armor near you. Talk to him about the assassin attacks and he will tell you to talk to Asciene Rayne. The attacks will now stop. If you talk to asciene rayne (in the building to the left of the top of the stairs, shes just right of the door) she has the ability to transport you to Mournehold (capital city) and is the first expansion.
NOTE: You should Finish around in morrowind first as tribunal (official name of the expansion) is harder.

Well, I think you're right about the glitch. The 0 to -50 settings cause the problem, but lower ones seem to actually make the game easier.

Have you read those instructions? Anywho... As I got tired of dying everytime I rested, I ran through the Tribune section. (Had to use god mode for the harder parts.) It took me a while, but I after searching every outdoor area, I found him.

As to the magicka in combat, I've noted several (ranged) spells and scrolls, as well as advice that would seem to indicate that that's the only form of magicka combat.
I hope it's not.

There's also enchanted Items besides scrolls that you can use.
You can also enchant your own, but that requirs a Soul Gem.

Another Harry Potter fan!
(How'd they let "he-who-must-not-be-named" in here?)

Back on track...
After my last post, I read through some other threads, and noted several on enchanting.
Went back to the WIKI, read up on enchanting, and gave it a try.
I managed to enchant my weapon to cast paralysis on strike, and a couple other items to resist poison and paralysis.
The end result has been that the assassins never hit me more than once or twice, for very little damage.
'Course, that's still on the easiest setting, need to try raising it.
I also noticed that I can now cast during combat, on the easiest setting.
I need to raise my difficulty level, as it gets waaaaaay to easy as I level up, but I'm leary about that wierd spot where instead of hitting me with a silver dagger, he cast some spell that killed me instantly.

ehm you can't cast during combat if

a) you have low casting abilities (not playing wiht mage or custom class character that has high leveles in certain types of magic)

b) your stamina bar is low - prevents you from making sucessfull hits as well as succesfull casting of spells. to counter that you need to drink a potion of restore fatigue or use some enchanted item for that.

there are plenty of quests (see wiki) and yes there are main quests which have some animation in between.

i only played the main quest (i dont' have expansions). but they say it's better to finish main quest before continuing to other main quests.

then again.... you are completelly free.

as fpr classes some are a bit strange, but then again you can always make a custom one.

Technically it is, although there's not just ranged, there's also Touch which does as the name suggests: you need to be up close and personal. Nothing quite like dancing with a Dremora Lord eh? Beyond that there isn't much in terms of magicka combat. Destruction is the only real significant combat-related skill in magicka, designed specifically to harm or kill enemies. The rest are more about protection, defense, self-preservation and enhancing skills. There are some things though that can hinder the enemy but Destruction is the only school that actually hurts life (others have things like Burden or Silence).

Of course, it depends how you would prefer to fight with magicka. True mages are able to use their powers to not just hurt their enemy but also to humiliate them and put them at severe disadvantages, like destroying their armour with a few spells, eroding their weapons and even weighing them down. Silencing a fellow mage is great or even absorbing their power. You can also of course enchant books, scrolls, armour, weapons and sundry items to use to your advantage – brilliant skill to have, mage or not. You can create your own spells of course, make potions to sell at ridiculous prices to gullible vendors and summon an army of Daedra to maim your enemies and wash your dirty clothes. And of course you can heal yourself, fortify your skills and walk on water if you're partial to mimicking Jesus. You can't summon great storms to rain Hell down on your enemy (you can try) but if you go down the path of magicka combat you'll quickly adapt to using it. Admittedly mages are at a significant disadvantage compared to warrior types but if you learn how to use a mixture of spells you'll be able to overcome anything.

If nothing else, just do what I do and blast the gits with all the scrolls you can get your hands on. :D

Assuming you mean finish Morrowind before you go onto Tribunal or Bloodmoon that is pretty sound advice. You can do their sub quests though and you should definitely visit Solstheim and Mournhold at some point; if you're partial to finding powerful weapons you can earn serious money, and the quests given out by the Captain of the Royal Guard are easy enough and give good rewards, even at low levels. As soon as I'm ambushed by the Dark Brotherhood, which is relatively early on when you're new, I go to Mournhold to straighten things out. It's a challenge but doable and worth the while. But yeah, I wouldn’t advise trying to complete the expansions before dealing with Dagoth Ur. They’re specifically designed for high-level characters.
(How'd they let "he-who-must-not-be-named" in here?)
'tis the refuge of the damned; didn't you notice the Dagoth brothers hanging around sulkily?

I noticed that when I created a High Elf with magicka maxed out.

Besides Sorcerers, I also enjoy playing Rogues in the cRPG games. (Sometimes, combining the two.)
I've taken a similar approach, playing either a thief or assassin, with a few useful spells.
I've found the "mark/recall" combo indespensible, along with the "walk on water," "buoyancy," and "invisibility" spells. The "resist paralysis" is nice for enchanting items, and "paralysis" is great for enchanting a weapon. Other than that, I haven't found many spells that I enjoy using, or that are of much use, to me.
I just created a character for the Morag Tong, and it's the most enjoyable character I've played, so far.

its so easy to create spells that just render your enemy useless, i found out that enchanted items are far much better than casting it yourself, for one it never fails, and 2 u can come across some items that seem to have unlimited charge, i like a combo of paralize and dmg at the same time, i had this ring of abomination or something, paralize for 30 secs and frost dmg 2-3 points for 30 seconds, as that chips away at there health, i am still free to do physical or magical dmg at the same time and even if theres a group, theres enuf charge on the ring to take out 3-4 people, all of them being paralized at the same time, kinda makes it not fun ne more, thats when u gotta make a new char.

Paralyze is iffy since a lot of stuff have resistance/immunity to it.
I use burden. Myself, I use enchanting to boost myself rather than to kill opponents.

yea but burden only means they cant move, they still can use marksminship, or magicka, but i like the enchanted stuff the gives u a bunos to an attribute and a bound item.

Never use burden, use drain/damage strength.
Much more powerfull for the same amount of magicka.
Drain strength is five times more powerfull, damage strength is about a third less powerfull but lasts forever.
And if you think about gettin' creative, damage/drain speed will do as well.
