What TES Game Would Be Easiest To Remake In a New Engine?

More of a theoretical question than anything (I'm not any sort of game dev :S ). I'm guessing Battlespire or Redguard, but I don't know.

I ask because CryEngine 5 got a pay-what-you-want release, and I thought.... I thought it would be cool, okay! (A pipe dream, but cool.)

If we're talking bare minimum.. Arena, followed by Travels, then Daggerfall/Battlespire.

On a more interesting note, Redguard and some of the other spin offs would bode well in more modern engines, may even spice them up a bit. Be even more interesting if the mechanics got remastered. I'd be down for some Battlespire in the Unreal engine. Bring it

IDK about that Beta, Arena with it's infinite random locations and stuff sounds kinda difficult to apply on more modern, detailed engines.

Of course I know pretty much nothing about the game dev provess, so I dunno. Might be wrong.

Battlespire and Redguard would be easiest. The problem with open world game is memory size and well, we all saw what happened when a console with less memory then most modern calucators tries to run one. Arena and Daggerfall would be memory heavy and would need to heavily change the cities to reflect the depiction. E.g. Imperial City would need to resemble the one in Oblivion instead of generic city. The load times would be long and i think, even with the specs of the PS4 and X1, Bethesda would struggle to get Daggerfall and Arena remade without either having to reduce the size, compromise with some features and generally have performance issues. Sure, the Fox Engine could avert that but Konami seems content to let it rust.

Morrowind is an easy(ish) game for Bethesda to remake due to it being 3D. But i admit, i know little about game development.

I don't believe it's infinite or even procedurally generated.

Is it not? I thought that you could theoretically walk from one end of Tamriel to the other, but the towns you find are randomly generated. Or was that Daggerfall?

In Daggerfall you can walk town to town (if you are crazy enough to do so for real life days at a time), Arena you can't.

Daggerfall. There's so bloody much in that game that would be really fun to see in an refined and modernized package.

In Arena, the terrain just repeats forever.

In Daggerfall, you can walk all over the Iliac bay, if you so choose, but it takes a really long time and it's super boring.

Who says I was thinking about modern, detailed engines :wat: alot of old school/retro engines could be on par. If anything, more modern systems would make it easier >_> open world/generated experiences have only been refined over the years >_> and ames like minecraft making tgr bigger shift towards RAAM than dependence on graphics hardware.. honestly an Arena remake could be done.. it just wont be no ESO2 if thats what your thinking

I misread the title...

Still would like a Daggerfall remake though.

Random games would be actually easy to remake since you won't have to actually design (and that's a large chunk of careful detailing in modern gamedev) anything besides some basic prefabs, although I should remind you that Daggerfall is not actually random: the locations were procedurally generated by Bethesda and then the game was released, so everyone has the same dungeon and town layouts all around, only the swag, quests and enemies are random.

All right, I did some digging and found several incomplete recreations of Daggerfall:

https://youtu.be/9bCTvMZoXOc?t=53s This one is recreating it in the Unity engine.

https://forum.openmw.org/viewtopic.php? ... =10#p33727 And this person started work on a recreation in the OpenMW engine, but I don't think he got very far. (There's some swearing on the page, so this is a warning)

http://xlengine.com/ This one is a recreation in a recreation of the original Daggerfall Engine.

I don't know if any of these work at all, but I figured you all might want to take a look.

XL Engine is actually a separate open source engine (similar to OpenMW), and it's able to emulate lots of other games aside from Daggerfall. It did start out as DaggerXL but I wouldn't really call it a "recreation".

Redguard would have to be the easiest to recreate in a modern engine, particularly when you consider its size if we're talking recreate from the ground up rather than port, but of the main titles it would have to be Morrowind.

OpenMW, as legoless mentions, is already tantalisingly close to doing just that, and it's 'just' a community-driven project.

I don't imagine it'd be that unrealistic for Bethesda or a Bethesda supported studio to do similar.

I don't know why everyone brings this up whenever Daggerfall/Arena gets mentioned. You can create the main cities, settlements, townships, etc and then implement a radiant system ala Skyrim. You also don;t need to include every single randomly generated town, just the main ones or enough to make a full game.

Probably Redguard, Battlespire or Shadowkey

It may be somewhat cheeky, but a lazy "HD" remake of Skyrim would actually probably be the easiest. The other games would involve a lot of work from scratch.

Bethesda is actually sitting on an "HD" version they created to test out the power of the Xbox One, though it's probably just large enough to cover the E3 demo dungeon.

There's also the HD Texture Pack DLC on Steam.

What power? :Twisted Evil:

I kid, I kid. I would actually be ok with giving Skyrim a console re-release that included an actual draw distance.

Nowadays, consoles suck, period. They used to have something special in them that made them different from PC - as well as more oriented on certain game genres. Not to mention the quality of console games going down a long downward slope over the recent eight years. There used to be great games there along with the classics born on old school consoles. Now, the games are some boring stuff, one alike another, with strong emphasis on graphics, which could have been released for PC instead - which would make them better, resourceful and more modable. Playing consoles, however, requires more money - to buy the console (a PC with similar characteristics would cost less), then buy games - which cost more than PC games. So they make exclusives just to keep people buying "new generation" consoles every few years and pay a lot for the games (unless you mod the actual apparatus to ignore copy protection - which is generally not guaranteed to work properly). They just want more dosh without actually making some great games or a gaming station powerful enough for top-notch graphics in those games without people having to manually modify the hardcoded settings to allow their use on the full power!

I disagree that consoles suck and that playing them requires more cash but i shan't get into the pros and cons of either side etc.. Rarely see these types of conversations end well.

But i think, Oblivion and Skyrim would be easy if they did a small HD upgrade and sorted out the RAM related issues that plagued both games. The spin offs would require a lot of work but are doable. the first two, it would pretty much require a complete restart from scratch for both lore reasons, consistency and replacing the random generated content with actual content. It would be a bit of an issue for parts of the map to randomly generate with HD graphics due to system demands and even with 8GB of RAM, i could see most systems struggling to cope due to, well, Bethesda doesn't optimise stuff well with the Gamebyro engine.

They need to take it out back and shoot it. It's beyond outdated and Creation is being dragged down by it.

Neither of those games were procedurally generated.

I'd say Battlespire or Redguard, honestly—probably the latter would be more likely—because they're contained within smaller settings, as opposed to provincial-based games in the I-V series that have so much detail work put into such a large space. Dawnstar might be an interesting choice as well, though clearly the mechanical/gameplay format would have to be significantly modified.
