Upgrading my laptop and tablet to Windows 10! I am pretty darn excited.

Is that the new Windows 10 splash screen that appears during startup or is it just a wallpaper MS made for Windows 10? I haven't payed any attention to Windows 10 yet so I don't know. Only thing about Windows 10 that I know is that they finally brought back the taskbar and start button/menu. But I think it's limited though. I think the tiles from Windows 8 are still there. Is it?
EDIT: Fixed typos

That's a wallpaper made by a Windows fan. The smokey windows logo thing is the hero wallpaper for Windows 10.
10 brings back the start menu, and adds to it by allowing you to have live tiles in the start menu.
The biggest upside about Win10 is for developers. They can write one app and have it ready to go for desktops, tablets, phones, Xbox and Hololens with minimal extra work.

Looking forward to upgrade next week, but I would rather aim for W10Pro (not home from my w7hp). I Hope the older games will run as good as they were on 7/8.

Does that mean DOS stuff? 'Cause I've got ES: Battlespire and Redguard, and a game called Myst, that I wanna run...
Or does it just mean older stuff in general, non-DOS, that would otherwise have trouble - for example I know Morrowind has some issues with Windows 8?

I would love to upgrade. I was the first person I knew (besides Musicman I guess) who upgraded to Win 8 and actually liked it. But I have a few problems: firstly I don't have 8.1 because for some reason every time I try to install it I get redirected to an invalid site, and secondly my computer is still built on 32 bit architecture, which really doesn't hold up. So until I have the money to upgrade to 64, I'm not going to bother changing my OS.

From what little research i've done, Windows 10 looks like it will completely bury 8 just by bringing back the start menu button and being simple to use. That and i dislike using things that flat out try to replicate a tablet layout on a PC as i just don't like the look of it. Call me ol' fashioned but if an OS is on a PC, it should resemble a PC OS not a [&@%!] version of a PC OS.
However, an upgrade is off the books for me at the moment and won't replace good ol' 7 until i have replaced my laptop. Then, it will have permission to be replaced by 10.

It's a free upgrade for any computer running Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, and it's better than all of those OSes, so there's really no reason not to upgrade.

Introducing premium mode for solitaire (to get rid of previously non existing ads). Forced 3rd party software installs (Candy Crush). Forcing unwanted driver updates (only Pro can postpone). And all of this packed with unclear future (charging money for upgrades/features like in every crappy mmo game is one of the possible outcomes).
There's quite a bunch of reasons why not to upgrade.

Let's be honest, how many people actually play solitaire anymore. And, those that do, are probably not the ones that care about ads.
Forced 3rd party software installs (Candy Crush).
False(At least with Candy Crush), Its just a link to the store. You can unpin it, and never have to worry about it. And, if you for some reason have it actually installed, just right click and uninstall.
Forcing unwanted driver updates (only Pro can postpone).
Legitimate concern.
And all of this packed with unclear future (charging money for upgrades/features like in every crappy mmo game is one of the possible outcomes).
All speculation at this point. Its just as likely that future features will be free.

Anyone know when MS will release the retail version of Win10 to retailers? As far as I know they've only released the free updates for right now.

I play the Solitaire that came on my little HP Windows 7 laptop... Not very frequently (mainly because the laptop is mostly unused. It's only good for work or very old games), but I still play it. Also, there's that version on Neopets that I tend to play on occasion.
... Don't judge me.
On Windows 10, though... This PC will not be "upgraded." One: I like Windows 7. Two: this thing is old and might get replaced soon. Three: there are some features I'm not happy about with Windows 10 (like the forced updates). Four: it's brand new. I'm not getting an operating system that hasn't been out for that long. Who knows what issues it might have?
Though it seems like I might wind up with Windows 10 anyway. My father is getting the upgrade on his PC (the one I'm supposed to be getting at some point, assuming it doesn't die. It stopped working yesterday because some storms managed to damage it) purely because it's free. I don't know if he realizes it will be free for a year or not... Either way, I don't like it. I don't even know if all my games will work on it. There are already several I can't play because Windows 7 doesn't agree with them (and also a few I can't play because they lag like hell, despite the fact that they ran great on my older and weaker XP machine). How many more will get added to that list? My laptop might be Windows 7, but it has absolutely no hope of being able to run any of the games I have. That [&@%!] thing struggles with Morrowind unless I'm running on low settings.

Oh, boo hoo, you don't have to do anything or pay money to get bug fixes or updates. At least they're not pulling an Apple and calling it Liger and charging $50 for feature updates. I like this shift, actually, since they are committing to putting out updates as soon as they're ready instead of waiting for service packs.
Several people on another forum I visit have reported installing 10 on Vista era hardware and it never running better.
Retail versions are available for order or preorder at Amazon, I believe.
Check out reviews, btw. Almost all of them are positive, say this is the most stable Windows launch ever, and encourage people to upgrade.

People can preach about it all they want. Just because there's a new Windows out doesn't mean I have to like it. And I don't. 7 is the last one I liked.
Unless Microsoft changes some things about it (and I doubt they will), I don't think I'll ever like 10.

I'm more concerned that I might lose a significant number of my games if I get a PC with Windows 10 on it. Most of my games are older than Vista. XP or earlier. The oldest were designed for Windows 95/98/2000/ME. If 10 can run an old version of Office, then maybe it can run games from long ago. Maybe. I just don't want to risk that. Not yet, anyway. The switch to 10 is inevitable, since this PC is too weak to run any modern games and I really need to replace it. This ones time as a gaming PC is over. It will either be added to the PC graveyard (where it will become spare parts), or it will be cleaned, repaired, and given to my mother (who still prefers XP. She doesn't seem to mind 7, at least).
Also, with forced updates: I would rather be able to control exactly what is installed onto my PC and when it is installed on my PC. I don't like the idea of forced updates because it takes that control away. At least Windows 7 lets me do what I want with it. I'd like to have that option with Windows 10, but it seems that will only be possible if you have the Enterprise version (if what I read was true... And also if I'm remembering it correctly). Professional could delay updates for a certain amount of time, but only Enterprise could control it.
There are other issues I have, but it's mostly with Microsoft and not their operating systems. I haven't been hearing nice things about Office, for instance.

Anyone reported installing 10 on XP era hardware? If the system requirements I read were true then my computer should run it depending on if I can get drivers.

Well, from what I've seen of firsthand testimonies, Windows 10 is equally as backwards compatible as Windows 7 & 8. I'm hesitant to do change over as well for the same reason, but there's pretty good evidence so far that anything will work.

Also, I just checked, and Win10 allows you to run programs in compatibility mode all the way back to Win95, just like 7 & 8.

I was at Walmart earlier and saw a Windows 10 laptop there on display. I tried it out for a minute. I was shocked.

I've got Windows 10, already installed "Classic Shell" over the normal start menu, since I still like the Win 7 one more and didn't want to bother with the settings. (I was already using Windows 8.1, so I still wanted the old start menu back.)
Also, as someone who is working as tech support for a website, I can confirm that Windows 10, and more importantly Microsoft Edge, isn't quite bugless. I've had to help a few people figure things out on it. (Despite working for a genealogy company, not Microsoft.

I would get it installed. But whenever I click on the icon fo r windows it opens a window and spends forever and never loading what was on the window. So that's a problem for me.

You can also directly download the ISO file from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software ... ndows10ISO
Windows 8.1, 8, and 7 should allow you to mount the ISO without having to burn it to a disc or put it on a USB. But you can do that, too.
