That sounds very strange. I would try starting the computer in safe mode and see if it stays on. If so, you could use sysconfig to edit the startup processes and systematically figure out what's going on.

I have seen something like this before, I probably wrote a note about this issue somewhere. I'll try to find it, if I can.
