Patching to 2.13

I have learned recently that my Anthology Daggerfall is not the latest patch. I have downloaded the latest patch from "Daggerfall:Files" in the wiki and read some guides but I still don't understand how do I patch the game. Could someone please explain the process to me?

After you unzip the update, copy all files from the update to your \Dagger\Arena2 folder and overwrite all files.

Just double click on the update exe file and it should unzip, from what I remember...
You do this from Windows, not DOSBox.

I've just double-checked, the patch (dag213.exe) is a DOS executable which must be run through DOSBox on modern systems.

Here's a good general DOSBox tutorial which covers the topic of running a specific executable file from DOSBox:

[Edit] You might also want to check out this section of the Wiki.

Yea, modern systems suck. I'm using Windows XP, so the exe unzipped itself just fine when I did it a couple months ago.

Modern systems suck at DOS exe's.

I have no idea what I am supposed to mount in DOSbox. I've tried the command "mount c c:\dagger" but it doesn't work.

The idea of mounting is that a folder on your actual hard drive (e.g. "C:\DOS\" but it could be anything) is treated as a hard disk on its own inside DOSBox.

For example, if you create a folder on your real hard drive called C:\DOS\GAMES\ and then use the following command in DOSBox:

Code: Select all

mount c c:\dos
then inside DOSBox when you go to the C drive, the actual C:\DOS folder's contents will be treated as the C drive's contents. So the path to the GAMES folder when inside DOSBox would be C:\GAMES.

For the purposes of running a single game, you can just mount its installation folder as the C drive (or any other letter of your choice). Thus if you have Daggerfall installed in the folder C:\DAGGER on your actual hard drive, if you type in DOSBox

Code: Select all

 mount c c:\dagger
then it will appear, inside DOSBox, that the game has been installed directly to the root of the C drive.

But if you don't have a folder called C:\DAGGER on your real hard drive, and try to mount it in DOSBox as described above, nothing will happen.

I have a directory called "DAGGER" but when I try to mount it DOSBox says that the directory doesn't exist. I've also tried the directories "daggerfall" and "DF" but DOSBox says that those don't exist either.

I'm going to recommend you don't even bother with the copy of Daggerfall you got in the Anthology. Here is a Daggerfall 2.13 Installer which also comes with the COMPUSA exclusive content and a host of unofficial patches and tweaks that are really nice. It takes like twenty seconds to use that installer and get the game working as intended, versus the two or so days you've been having trouble with the Anthology version.

My question about that is will I be able to retain my save files. I'm already at level 9 in Daggerfall and even though my version is old and buggy, it is tolerable and I'd rather continue my somewhat buggy well progressed game than start a new bug-free one.

But regarding the patch update I created a new directory called "DOSGAMES" and through that I managed to mount the directories and executed the patch. I put the disk in and successfully mounted the CD-ROM but still when it asks me to press any key and I do it still keeps on flashing the message telling me to insert the disk and press any key.

I would just abandon the character, personally. It takes a few starts of this game to learn the basics towards making a good one.

I'd start a new character too, specially if you are panning to do complete main quest. Imagine you reach level 15 and then, suddenly, you encounter a big bad bug that won't allow you to continue the quests or something. You would have to either install the patched version or just give up about the main quest. And you raised 6 levels more for that.

On the other hand, maybe you can do some kind of backup of the saves? Although I don't know if those saves would keep their bugs even with the patches installed, since they came from an unpatched game.

Make sure you put the correct label when mounting the CD.

I mounted the CD-ROM with the disk in it and got the following messages:

Code: Select all

Z:\>mount d D:\ -t cdrom -label Daggerfa
MSCDEX installed
Drive D is mounted as CDRom D.\
I then tried to run the patch but still got stuck in the exactly same point.

I also tried one other thing. At this point I should make the additional note that the Daggerfall I'm trying to apply the patch into is not the original copy of mine, but a copy I put in the "DOSGAMES" directory I created for the applying of the patch, because I couldn't mount the "Program Files (x86)" directory in which I have the original copy that I installed from the disk. I tried to run the patch without FIXMAPS (because I don't really care if some towns have duplicate names) and got the message that the update had been successful. I then started the Daggerfall copy in my "DOSGAMES" directory and the DOSBox setup screen looked a bit different so I think the patch really did affect the game. But when I went into "Load Game", all my save files were gone. Once again I remind that I do still have the save files in the unpatched copy. I have however heard of FIXSAVE and other save game editors. Another solution to this problem would be that I could use these save game editors to restore my character in the patched version, but I don't know how to use them.
