Abomb

So, it has become prevalent now at hour 497. When it hadn't showed up earlier I thought that maybe I somehow averted the affliction, that my saves were immune. I was in denial. I first noticed it during Nature's Fury. The bear walked away, and I heard a stone sliding, but there was no door. I reloaded an earlier save, proceeded more quickly, and scored some old boots on the next try. I was naive to consider it just an Xbox cache issue. Now, having saved a chapel from Aurorans, I can stand still and watch the flame effects freeze before my eyes, and the light of the next spell I cast lingers indefinitely.
I guess I already know the answer, but I have to wonder just how much further I can take this before it absolutely stops all forward progress. More likely, I'll lose my patience before then, but if I could at least conclude KotN, I think I could be satisfied.
Starting over holds very little appeal right now. I've got a huge backlog that includes Skyrim, and precious little spare time for my hobby these days. Still, the compulsion to finish everything is difficult to ignore.
I've read about complicated endeavors to salvage Xbox saves with conflicting reports of success, and had I the time I'd be willing to try them. It's just not going to happen that way, though, so I suppose it's time to move on.
So long, my Dunmeri avatar, Hero of Kvatch, Duke of Mania, Knight of the White Stallion, Listener, Arch-Mage, Gray Fox, Master, Knight of the Thorn, Grand Champion, and savior of countless innocents. Your adventures will be remembered, at least until the hard drive dies.

I have used the animation fixer mod to fix the Abomb on the PC version in the past. It only takes a few seconds to fix.
Mod:

Only used it on PC though, but it seems to work on Xbox saves as well:

My favorite character suffers from the same grand annoyance, I don't get it why older saves get so corrupted... I bought a beast of a pc recently and hoped it would overcome it, but it doesn't.. blehh >_<

My very first incarnation of Casandra Serein, back in Oblivion on an Xbox 360, lost it around the 350-hour mark due to a corrupted cell in the crossroads near Cropsford. I never played a character with more hours than this one. I never saw an A-bomb, but it cured me of the obsessive compulsion to seek 100% completion on any one character ever again.

Unless your game is capped at 30fps, it'll happen faster with a stronger PC. I can't recall the actual explanation for that, but... It's annoying either way.
My Seryna is at 188 hours (I think?) and she's almost at the tipping point. 48Fblahblahwhateveritis. I haven't looked in a while. A few more hours and it'll change to 49. I was waiting for it hit so I could reset and do the Shivering Isles without worrying about it getting her right in the middle of doing something.

Does this Abomb happen with Skyrim too? Or is it just an Oblivion affliction?

Just Oblivion. If Skyrim had this issue, you would have heard of it by now.

Oh God, please no; I want to get Skyrim soon and that would be a problem... I always play RPGs with a favorite character until I do absolutely everything I can with it. I like to take my time...

There's no turning back now. Within a few hours of starting Skyrim, this unfinished Oblivion run became destined to remain so. Perhaps someday I'll return to Cyrodiil.

I know this is off topic but does anyone know if Morrowind suffers from the Abomb? I've never played it long enough yet to find out.

Morrowind suffered other performance issues, the greatest of which was easily diminished by turning shadows off, saving frequently, and creating a new save each time. I spent far more time with that game and never encountered anything that completely broke the experience.

On PC this isn't really a problem, it happens once every 100-400 hours and you can easily reset it within minutes. If you use the stutter remover mod (highly recommended to reduce crashes and improve performance) you can cap fps at 60 which is a good idea for most gamebryo games.
The abomb is unique to Oblivion, for example, it doesn't happen in Fallout 3 which uses a slightly updated engine.
