Anyone punishing themselves with this game? What are you thoughts about it and how is your first character build?

As I'm playing it, I'm reminded of all the good aspects of the first Dark Souls and falling in love with it. Out of all the new features, I'm liking the Poise system and the way you slowly become a weaker hollow as you die repeatedly. I really can't tell if this game is more difficult than the last one though, but if it is, it probably has to do more with the enemy placement imo; Still I have to admit that I've already been tempted to rage-quit after recovering my humanity and then immediately falling to my death rather than taking the ladder lol

I've gone All-out Warrior with my first gal and lucked out right at the beginning of the game with a Demon's Great Hammer random drop at the nest during the intro. I leveled up my strength to 25 as soon as possible and have just been wailing on these hollows. I just hope I don't need Faith or Attunement down the line because I've completely abandoned them

I just got Dark Souls 2 yesterday. Dear god, it's amazing. I like this one much more the the first with the only reason being that I had abstained from watching anything dark souls related until I had finally got dark souls 2, and I still haven't. This way everything is new and surprising. I kinda ruined my dark souls 1 play through when I looked up tips and stuff. I now understand the beauty of dark souls when you play it by yourself using only in-game messages and help from other players. This is too fun. This is the first game in a while that has captivated me. My real life might be over. Tell my wife I love her.

Sure, what's her number? :P

I need to pick this game back up. I've gotten my character to level 95 but have yet to complete the entire game; Too many games to play and not enough free time to enjoy them :(

Stupid sentinels. I am getting wrecked. Not many people put down summon signs, unfortunately. I suppose I should in order to further understand the boss without losing souls or health. The struggle begins.

I picked it up on Monday and started to play it yesterday. It seems like more or less the same with minor additions and that's not a bad thing. It's Dark Souls. It's going to be a [&@%!]. It will make players rage/cry/do deals with the devil and generally kick arse.

It feels like a hybrid of Dark and Demon Souls. I can't tell if it's set before Dark Souls or a few centuries after it but i suspect From Software didn't want to have it be a direct sequel and just want to mention the odd bit of DS1 in a subtle manner.

Also, don't hit the statues in the giants forrest. They will [&@%!] you up! I'm avoiding using the wiki this time and i'm using the Swordsman class. Dualwielding is surprising effective! Oh and i've died 5 times. 3 times due to me failing to jump a gap. Once to some hollows(those things in that keep in the forrest of the giants) and the first boss. I will be annoyed if i die again and loss 5k souls. I almost defeated it but made a mistake and died. Also, i broke my sword.

Speaking of which, swords seem to break easily and i've lost my torch. I'm not sure if it's a bug or if the game is just being a dick but i can't light it anymore. :(

I'm not going for my typical heavy melee build, instead i'm going to aim for a light dual wielding build that uses magic or a bow or both. Will dump points into health, endurance and stats that are useful for me.

Speaking of the torch, does it do anything besides make light? I've never had to use it yet. All the areas are fairly well lit.

You can set enemies on fire.

I beat the [&@%!] giant today and restarted the game as i got [&@%!] off to the point where i knew i had [&@%!] up. I am a knight and only died twice. The giant was surprisingly easy but [&@%!] the pursuer! I've decided to go with a heavy melee build instead.

I've been dieing (lol) to play DS2. I've been playing the first one plenty, rather enjoy the challenge. At first<_< meh... but I appreciate how much growth in skill you grow to acknowledge. I've been itching for a new round of smashing my head into a boulder still it cracks.. so that I may smile with my brittle teeth and misshaped head. My only hesitation with DS2 is certain features and the change in focus from scenic to player character. If I'm not mistaken weapons degrade at a very fast rate, granted they automatically are repaired when you rest at a bonfire<_< seems like DS2 can't give you a nice thing without repo'ing something you took for granted.. I can't grind mobs like I wished without them disappearing for good.. and if I lose progress then that was all a waste now was it? And I heard about the feature where total health declines if you die repetitively.. and the means to revert to human are now finite >_<

I really must know, are these obstacles easy to overcome and adjust to or make the game all the more punishing.. when it doesn't need to be>_> more difficult I can hand.. punishing is just cruel.. and sadly to say DS was actually pretty fair in my opinion.

Also in regards to DS and DS2<_< the 2nd(3rd) installment to the series does in fact take place after the events of the former. With the lord souls back but in new forms<_< subtle and obvious references like the old dragonslayer. The only real confusion in the series is where Demon Souls take place.. though most believe it to take place at the end of the whole series given it's nature

As far as torches go, every time you pick one up it will add time to your torch timer, which can be found on your stats page. Like TopHat, I recall never needing one as well until I reached an area called Black Gulch.... you'll see why when you get there..

Unlike it's predecessors, I seriously didn't understand the story of this game at all. Maybe that's why I still have yet to complete it; It has all the great elements of the other games but I'm just not into it as much

The sentinels have finally fallen. There's no way that boss is possible solo on a first play through of a character. Luckily, I got to summon some jesus guy who had a powerful weapon to beat them. Talk about a difficulty spike. The next boss I found to be much easier. Makes me wonder if I was fighting the sentinels wrong. Probably.

I'm actually afraid of buying Dark Souls 2 after throwing (breaking) an Xbox controller 8 hours in with Dark Souls 1. I have a short temper so Idk if I should get it, is the game easier?

No.

At the very least it's just as difficult, but I think it just seems that way because I've played both Dark Souls and Demon's Souls so much.

Thanks for the reply, it seems the game isn't for me. I like a challenge to some extent but I mostly play games for leisurely fun.

Dark souls 1 was way easier considering the fact that you could roll with no worries. In ds2 there's a more strict timing to rolling if you want to completely avoid damage. This plus estus regen rate, harder more creative secret walls, and weapon durability actually mattering makes the game more difficult as well.
