The greatest game that never was

I just read this article on Cracked and thought we could have a thread like this here.

What is your idea for a fantastic game that no one has made so far? Or at least no one has done right?

I recently played Shadowrun Returns and imagined how awesome a solid cyberpunk MMORPG could be. Think about it: you could finally have an RPG where different kind of characters would really have totally different ways of playing. You'd have different kinds of "physical" characters, who actually go to some location and shoot things, talk to people, steal the loot, and so on. And then there would be hackers, who stay at the base and conduct their part of the mission in cyberspace, assisting the "away team" in different ways. They hack security systems, trigger false alarms, remotely control drones and so on. Sometimes you need to take your hacker with you to access a closed network, and they need to be protected by more combat-oriented characters. It means two completely different games in one, connected together in different ways with players working towards the same goal from two separate angles. I don't have a clear idea about how the cyberspace would look like, but I know for sure I don't want to repeat what Shadowrun did - their "cyberspace" looks exactly the same as the real world, just with a different colour scheme and using different tools to fight different kinds of obstacles.

I would LOVE a Hunger Games game (so long as we leave mess that Mockingjay was out of the equation and stick to the good stuff). I can see the potential in a game like that. Also the Co-Op horror sounds fantastic.

"Zombie Master" games have been made before though. Overlord is kinda like that.

From the ones mentioned in the article I liked the "possession game" the best (though it was pointed out in the comments that there already are games like that) - I really like the idea of the style of gameplay changing completely every time you jump to a new character. I look for that element in every game I play, that's why in Skyrim I prefer characters who can approach every situation in several different ways, and that's why my cyberpunk MMORPG idea is focused on the realworld vs. cyberspace activities used together to complete a task.

There was a game on the Dreamcast and I forgot what it was called, but you basically played as an entity that jumped to a new body everytime your current body was killed.

A fully open-world space RPG, complete with the ability to land on several different planets in different solar systems, fly ships between them, and have a deep set of story and lore to top it all off.

Such a game would be too good for this world.

I think EVE Online is a lot like that, guys. I think they're working to implement planetary landing.

I don't like EVE, mostly because it's plagued by the bane of unintelligent adolescent hormone-pumping pre-teens wielding over-priced gaming equipment to decimate players for their own self-empowerment to fill their emotional chasm of a soul.

Online games ruin concepts like that, so I don't believe they can pull off something such as a good space RPG.

A Star Trek game with depth, story, and rich immersion. Don't get me wrong, some of them are pretty good, but they're usually so unidimensional.

There's the X Series, Elite, Freelancer, Evochron Mercenary and the upcoming games Star Citizen and Starbound.

Star Citizen looks like something I'd love to play. If only it didn't require a top-shelf monster PC to run... ;)

If my PC had a face, it would melt if I ever tried to play Star Citizen on it.

I'm an original backer of Star Citizen. I'm even wearing a Star Citizen T-Shirt right now, heh.

I can't believe I forgot about Oddworld when I saw 'Possession Games'.

It's pitiful how little recognition the Oddworld series seems to get, really. Stranger's Wrath was one of my favorite games back in the day (Though that doesn't count as a 'Possession Game'). Abe's Oddysee was fantastic too.

The writer of the article must have never heard of the game Messiah

You mean this Messiah?

Yep, that Messiah. I had none of those issues when I played because I understood how to actually sneak (and it doesn't include walking up to a group of soldiers and trying to strangle one of them) and use the possession mechanic. It's a pretty neat concept, really. You have to use specific types of people to get through the levels.

Anyway, I digress.

They should make a Messiah sequel.

That space game would be my pick.. Different planets to explore, different races to choose from, kinda like TES but over a galaxy not one planet.. Races such as the greys with advanced tech, the whites with mind control, humanoids are very persuasive, beast race increased strength, reptilians have adaptable and chameleon skills, androids would be the common enemy.. Lots of space craft, battles in open space as well in harsh climates.. Mass effect climates where too much exposure could be harmful, unless you choose the reptilian race then you can adapt to anything but extreme cold which is suited for the beast race, greys whites and humanoids can only explore planets in the Goldilocks zone without a space suit... Leveling would be different, main objective would be to capture stars or solar systems to earn points to level your player or craft.. Choose a race then during game play you can swap classes for instance, humanoids have soldiers, rangers, and brutes all specialize in earth like weapons, each with a certain set of skill that u chose to level each time you capture a star, the whites would have healers, illusionist, and a type of destruction Mage and use staves, greys have scientist, robotics specialist, and their form of soldier using hi tech weapons like lasers, beast have wolf like, feline like, and bird like creatures using mostly melee weapons but have heighten senses and athletic ability, reptilians have well I haven't thought about their classes but u get the point, they also use melee and stealth... Each time you capture a star u gain 5 credits to spend on you race, either upgrade classes, weapons, crafts, defenses for you star or spread the points around.. I have thought about this for many months playing TES games.. It can happen.. Kinda like skyrim, mass effect, and sins of a solar empire wrapped in one

A Harry Potter RPG, where you create a character, go to Hogwarts, work in Diagon Alley or the Ministry of Magic. Maybe become a death eater. Buy a house in the magical world, or the muggle world.

Another game would be an RPG set in the 40's, in which you can explore some cities, suburbs, and the country, or join the army and fight in World War 2.
